Have we got fleas now?

Took dog out for a walk earlier and when I got back I was sat on the sofa and saw what I thought was a fly walking on my leg, wasn't gonna squish it then remembered the last time I left a fly alone and it was a midge and bit me so went to squish it and when I let go it jumped off. Managed to grab it again and couldn't squish it, rolled it about a bit and it was still so I could look, pretty sure it was a flea!

Went to shop, got flea shampoo and flea spoton stuff for the dog. Bathed and applied that, didn't see any fleas in the water nor any evidence of fleas in her fur or skin but shes a dark haired dog. Hoovered our room over and over, no other carpets. Hoovered her bed and changing our bedding and hoovering the bed and mattress.

Could we have escaped or am I going to have to get exterminator in and stuff? Never in my life seen a flea before!

Long story stort: found a flea on myself and worrying we have a massive infestation.

YABU it's fine probably just one stray
YANBU burn the house down it belongs to the fleas now.

If you do have fleas, anything you can buy without a prescription is pretty much useless. Keep vacuuming daily, though. Especially along the skirting board and the sides of furniture.

Get your dog some flea treatment from the vet and you'll never have an issue.

When our dogs have fleas you can usually spot them on the sparser hair on their belly.

Is she having regular flea treatment? (If not, get some and treat her, I'd recommend nexguard).

It might just be a lone one she picked up on a walk and you'll be ok. If you are infested you'll need indoorex to treat the house.

dementedpixie · 01/07/2020 18:39

Do you not regularly flea treat your dog anyway. The dog treatment should kill the fleas as long as its a decent one that works. What did you use?

DeanImpala67 · 01/07/2020 18:44

Indorex spray for the whole house, it's fab stuff, kills fleas and lasts for up to a year as a defence against further fleas. On a plus note it deters spiders too. Also it is best to get your flea treatment from your vet not the shops as previous posters have said.

Topseyt · 01/07/2020 18:52

Do you treat her monthly? I found I had to as I have a dark haired cocker spaniel who loves nothing more than darting in and out of ditches and hedgerows when out on walks. So if she comes upon things like hedgehogs she is highly likely to pick them up.

I have got on well with Frontline Plus. If you have a big dog though then do put the occasional treatment lower down on their body, not just on the back of their neck.

I found this out to my cost because I used to have a labrador. His treatments were all up to date but he got fleas around his arse! The vet told me that the spot in treatments sometimes don't spread over the entire surface area of the dog's skin, especially with large dogs, so fleas and other parasites can be more likely to settle in around their hindquarters.

Frontline spray seems pretty good for areas of the house where the dog likes to go, and for bedding.

One female flea can lay 200 eggs a day, and most over the counter flea treatment is a bit pants. I would get some proper stuff and nip it in the bud.

Topseyt · 01/07/2020 18:55

Indorex deters spiders!!! 😃😃 Really!!

I will have to get some of that, as I can't stand the feckers.

thebearwentoverthebumble · 01/07/2020 18:59

Had an awful flea infestation recently. Indorex, again and again!! ask the vet to prescribe Bravecto, we tried everything and it's the only flea treatment that worked.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 01/07/2020 18:59

Our dog groomer uses some kind of flea repellent shampoo when she grooms the dogs that seems to be really good, and we treat them every three months as habit. Our vet does a scheme where you pay £10 a month and it covers all of their vaccinations plus quarterly flea, tick, mite and worm treatments (it comes out lower than if we did it separately) and we've never had an issue.

Felifox · 01/07/2020 19:04

Our vet does a prescription which includes flea treatment, wormer and annual injection. This is just over £10 a month. Indorex is cheapest at Pets at Home, which also provide a vets and grooming service.

Whenever we've had fleas I've never been able to squish them dead the only way I've been able to kill one I saw is to put it in water and wait are you sure it was a flea?

Nottherealslimshady · 01/07/2020 19:25

I've checked her belly where she has lighter coloured fur too and cant see any evidence of anything but I have just bathed her with flea shampoo, thoroughly.

Shes treated every 3mo usually but it has been quite a bit longer than that as we ran out. We've never had any issue before though and it's not the first time I've missed an application, shes dog reactive so doesn't get close to other dogs but we have started training at a dog park.

@Topseyt didn't think of that, I put it in a couple of spots at the shoulder blades and neck but didn't want her to be able to reach it lower down.

Do you just put indorex everywhere and is it safe to do with the dog in the house?

@purpleme12 I'm pretty sure, I kinda scrunched it, couldn't see its legs but the body shape was a flea I think and it jumped.
