To ask you if you've had your gallbladder removed?

After experiencing sudden abdominal pain yesterday I ended up in A&E and have today found out I have gallstones and need my gallbladder removed. The surgery is likely to be a while away cuz of covid but I'm really anxious about the surgery.

Without any gorey details can anyone who has had their gallbladder removed let me know what to expect and anything to prepare for? Sad

I had mine out last year, the pain of the op was literally nothing compared to the gallbladder attacks I’d had! Only took pain relief for the first day, then could manage fine without, sore but back at work just over a week later. Only problem I’ve had since is a bit of an upset stomach after eating fatty food, I’ve found it helps to make sure I eat some fat every day.

@leostar it's shit isn't it! I'm similar I think, was nearly a year from surgery to first repeat attack, then about 6 months to the next one. Had a few threatened since but managed to stop them.

Waiting for further tests...

I did last year! It was fab. The hospital were brilliant, in and out in a day with keyhole surgery, and lost 10lb that haven't gone back on for some reason.

And you get a lovely general anaesthetic. Grin

I had mine out seven years ago, the surgery started out as keyhole but switched to open due to complications.

Recovery time was approx three weeks and I felt a million times better afterwards.

Yup - best thing ever. In and out same day. Slight pain on second day ( overdid it the first day after surgery) but was great after that.

TheoriginalLEM · 01/07/2020 20:46

Get the fucker out! I had gallstones and the attacks were worse than childbirth. It was hell.

Mines been.gone for 12 years and I've had no.issues.

In the meantime go fat free, fat will stimulate the gall bladder and cause pain.

Keyhole surgery, home the next day. Boom.

Yanbu to ask.

Had mine out about 20 years ago - keyhole surgery, no problem there. Take a hot water bottle for after the surgery though. They pump you full of air to inflate you to make it easier to get to your gallbladder and the air can travel around your insides when you wake up. I had huge pain in my shoulder and the hot water bottle really helped.

All I felt was relief! The “attacks” from gall bladder infection put me in hospital twice. Even though it almost 20 years ago that I had my keyhole surgery I’m forever grateful for it.

Thedogscollar · 01/07/2020 23:30

Yes I had gallbladder removed last year with keyhole surgery. In and out same day. Couple of days later felt fine, only two weeks off work. Compared to the pain of a gallstone attack the operation was nothing.

I hadn't heard of weight gain after surgery - I didn't put any on and nor did my sister luckily. I'm sure any weight gain could be sorted with dietary changes tough.

*though

Having my gallbladder out was a cinch! Lovely GA nap, Keyhole surgery and I was back on my feet after a week of semi rest (I had a 6month old baby)
