How long were/are your 6 month olds awake for?

My DD is 6.5 months old, at the minute she can go 4 nearly 4.5 hours for her day time nap, she shows tiredness at around 2 (is fed to sleep, i know, i know, please dont shame for this) so i lay her down and she will happily feed then roll over and bugger off playing so i leave her until the next cue and she goes down within seconds of the first side.

But, I am seeing/reading lots that she should be sleeping within 2 hours at this age, but, if I try she just refuses, cries and eventually bites my nipple and doesn't go if i rock her.

Is she really abnormal? Is this going to stop her development properly i.e taking things in, memory etc. Or, is it quite normal?

She often is awake for a max of 2hrs for her first nap (for around 2hrs), more often within an hour depending on her wake time and usually naps between 30mins up to 2 hours (shorter if she has fallen asleep quicker than the 4hrs) then sleeps a good 9hrs with one dream feed.

Also, do any of your babies self settle? Am i doing this parenting thing all wrong by feeding her to sleep?

My little boy at around 6 months:
6am: Wake up
9.30am-11.30pm: Nap
3pm-4pm: Nap
7pm: Sleep
It varied day-to-day but it was pretty much this. Sometimes he would only have one nap, from around 11-2/3ish. We were very lucky that he slept through the night from a really young age. You're not doing this parenting thing wrong at all - every baby is different so just do what works for you.

Mine slept 7 to 7, then about an hour half nap 11.30 ish and another mini nap of about 20 minutes at 3 often when I was in the car.

I’m struggling to remember what they did for naps, but neither of mine were great nappers & they seem to be turning out ok.

Re feeding to sleep. You have a magic way of getting your kid to sleep, don’t feel bad about using it. The best advice I ever got on this site was ‘don’t change something that’s not a problem now. Change it when it becomes a problem’

roundtwist · 01/07/2020 15:56

There is nothing wrong with feeding to sleep. There are no rules that say babies should sleep at certain times. Just do what works for you and your baby. It sounds like your doing a fab job.

My little one is 6 months and I still feels him to sleep too Halo he doesnt sleep through the night either - the longest I've got off him is 4 hours lol and that's only happened twice.
He tends to get up at about 7am then has a 90 minute nap about 8.30/9 then he'll have about 30-60minutes at 1/1.30 and a 30 minutes 4.30/5pm then goes to bed at 7.30/8pm and roughly we get 2 x 3hrs and 2x 2hr stints.

How do I delete that wasn't intended for here!?

JaneEyress · 28/02/2022 16:21

Becksiv 1. Make your own thread. Don’t hijack. 2. 6 month old babies don’t need a multivitamin. Why on earth are you trying to give him one? They need nothing if on formula, vitamin D and iron if breastfeeding. Talk to your pediatrician.

lanthanum · 28/02/2022 16:29

They don't read the books.

At 6m, mine used to wake about 8am, stay awake until about 3pm, then sleep 3 hours. She would tank up on milk in the evening - I can't remember when she went down, but probably between 9 and 10.
It would have been a nightmare if I'd had an older one, but it worked quite well for us - she seemed to function well on that, and I could either nap or get a fair amount done during her nap.

Becksiv · 28/02/2022 16:44

@JaneEyress if you keep reading you'll see that wasn't intended for here! Go take your anger out on someone else

Becksiv · 28/02/2022 16:55

@JaneEyress p.s in the UK the NHS recommends vitamin supplements from 6m+

ChocolateButtonsOfShame · 28/02/2022 17:23

@Becksiv any good? They taste nice, my 7 month old happily opens his mouth for the little syringe.

@Tiggytigert mine does this:

Wakes 6am
Nap 8am-9am
Nap noon-1pm
Nap 4.30 - 5.30pm
Down 7.30pm
Wakes 10pm, 1am, 3am, 5am... Sigh...

He's either fed or bounced to sleep. I've decided, just do what makes him happy and don't worry. He loves contact naps, why have a fight over putting him in his cot if I'm happy to cuddle him too? They're only babies once. If your little one seems content I wouldn't worry 🙂

This is very good:
