How did Mat Hancock ever get his job and how does he keep it?

Who put Gavin Williamson into his post??? Was there an interview panel? Did they say, “Yes, outstanding candidate.” Confused I’m just trying to imagine the process there. Even if he was a teacher that would be bad enough - but Minister for Education? Could he come across as any less dopey and out of touch? A whole nation of talented individuals and this is what they come up with. It’s astonishing when you think about it.

Matt Hancock has the same skills as Gove - ie saying what he’s told. But, as pp have said, this is the main pre-requisite for the Cummings cabinet, of which BJ is the mouth.

Has anyone seen the Michael Spicer video on MH and the 'diversity in the cabinet' shambles? It's hilarious. MH may be OK when reading from a script, but he cannot cope when having to think in the moment, which isn't great for a man in his position.

Meredithgrey1 · 30/06/2020 09:42

How would you do it better?

Whatever you think of MH, I find this to be such an odd defense. You don't need to be able to do the job better than the person you're criticising. If some of the clients I work with at my job complained about me being incompetent, it would be bizarre for someone to defend me by saying "well, you do it better then!". If I get an electrician in to fix something in my house and he sets the house on fire, I'm allowed to criticise that without being told "well, I'd like to see you try to rewire a house."
It's his job, he should be doing it better.

well he did have corona and carried on working throughout unlike many others in public service jobs so deserves respect for that

I think he is doing ok - just heard him on the radio and he sounded fairly energetic in the circumstances and took the questions well, considering he has prob been up all night discussing the outbreak in Leicester. He can never really rest

I quite like him.

That's a point about journalists - they aren't clarifying the information when they interview mps they are trying to trip them up so what the politican says is next day's headline

I think a lot of people totally forget that journalists aren't there to seek the truth on behalf of joe public, they are there to sell papers/online subscriptions and make money hence why one week you have the papers telling us how unsafe x, y and z is only for them to change their mind the following week to then change it back again the week after. They are there to play on our insecurities, nothing more.

BoingBoingyBoing · 30/06/2020 10:15

I'm pretty sure I could do a better job than any of the cabinet. Not being a self-serving twat without a single brain cell to my name puts me well ahead for starters.
