3 weeks they've been back and bloody head lice is back! AIBU to be annoyed?

DD aged 1 has been back in nursery for 3 weeks. DS 11 back at school the same. And we already have head lice in the house. People have been at home for weeks, why haven't they treated their children.
3 hours and over £60 I've just spent, sorting the hair of 5 children.
Only found lice in DS12 and the baby but I always do the whole family just in case. 2 girls have, long hair to the bottom of their back and one is very thick.
AIBU, to be annoyed?

The people who don’t treat their children’s headlice are not suddenly going to start doing it because there is a lockdown.

SquishySquirmy · 29/06/2020 19:43

Its annoying for you.
But I would assume a child (either at nursery or your ds' school) has been left with untreated head lice for months. Which is sad.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 29/06/2020 19:43

YANBU OP, they are horrible Envy

sleepismysuperpower1 · 29/06/2020 19:44

but also agree with PP, i feel sorry for the dc who have had them and haven't been treated

tilder · 29/06/2020 19:45

Yanbu. The infestation on some kids must be horrendous. Poor kids.

Btw Home Bargains sell the treatments for a fraction of the cost of elsewhere. I get stuff there and use a nitty gritty comb. The comb is £££ but works.

lockdownbaker · 29/06/2020 19:58

No need to spend that much, we treat a family of 7 for half that

RhodaDendron · 29/06/2020 20:02

Same here OP, I am gutted! DD scratching her head at dinner and now here we all are coated in Hedrin.
It would be awful if some poor child had had nits for the whole of lockdown but I imagine they could have easily been kept in circulation thorough key workers kids and the many people with lax approach to the rules... Hmm

BlusteryLake · 29/06/2020 20:07

It's annoying, but I think some people do treat but then don't check afterwards in case they missed a couple. They are way harder to get rid of than the nit shampoo manufacturers make out. I think they should be more upfront about the amount of combing required to truly get rid of them.

Wannabegreenfingers · 29/06/2020 20:09

So bloody annoying. Use conditioner not the treatments. Takes 17 days, but gets rid of them.

Greggers2017 · 29/06/2020 20:09

Yes I do feel very sorry for the children, poor little things. I work with some children who have been infested, it's sad.
I spent so much because I only had time to go to the local pharmacy.
I used to plait the older girls hair but they're now aged 11 and 12 and in secondary school, so they choose their own styles. So annoying.
I'm doing my hair now. DP will get the treatment when he's home too. He doesn't know yet 🙈

Stop buying the treatments. Conditioning and combing works just as well as long as you do it often enough. Realising that saved me a fortune.

Greggers2017 · 29/06/2020 20:24

@Poppinjay that's my plan for the next week. I just wanted to kill as many as possible at first.
At least I know what I'll be doing with my evenings for the next week or so

Just a quick question to everyone who uses the conditioner method. How many days for you recommend doing it for?

Poppinjay · 30/06/2020 23:13

You need to condition and comb really methodically every 2 to 3 days for 2 to 3 weeks. No need to do it every night.

Once there is one mature louse in the hair, they will have laid eggs. The aim is to remove the hatchlings before they have chance to mature enough to lay more eggs. I have always go more for the three weeks than the two with my DDs' hair because it is so thick, it would be very easy to miss one or two.

I find it easier to do it in front of the TV than in the bathroom because boredom doesn't set in.

The nice thing about conditioner is that it's so much easier to wash out than the oily stuff (whcih never seems to kill them all anyway).

It's a good idea to comb through with conditioner once a week when you know they're gone because you definitely pick new inhabitants up more quickly and have smaller infestations to deal with.

I really wish I hadn't read this as I'm scratching my head now as it feels itchy!!! Confused
