Basically today whilst out walking my dog I stopped to speak to a friend (social distancing) with my dog on a lead.

We are on the other side of the road to a house and a dog must of escaped from their garden and came at my friend and then me and my dog. I scooped my dog up. Not sure if that’s the right thing to do but she’s very a very petite JRT. Unsure of the breed of said dog but very tall and slim but fast! Came from nowhere. Whilst holding my dog - who is also nervous of dogs since getting attacked a couple years ago in our garden (long story bug neighbours dog managed to dig a hole into ours).

I stayed very calm and just kept my dog away. Dog was very tall and was leaping up towards me forwards my face (I’m quite tall and that is how tall the dog was). Me and the dog could have been hurt.

It then ran towards a small child walking with their parents (they didn’t have a dog) but it was circling the child who looked terrified. Then come back to my dog who I was still holding at this point and circling around us again (whilst we were trying to walk away).

Somebody from the house must of realised and came running out. Apologised but struggled to get this massive dog back in which was scary. They had no control over it.

I think the dog jumped the fence. I walked past again earlier (not with the dog that time) and they have a very low fence.

Aibu to think that they should build a higher fence? To keep it in. The dog is very tall and was nearly up at my face jumping up (I’m 5 foot 9).

I think I’m just anxious. Thinking what if I was walking with my children and the dog at the same time! Could have been a lot worse.

I know dogs escape. Mine included but my dog is more likely to go and lick someone to death! This dog appeared really agressive and appeared to bite his owner when the took him away!!

They live down the road. I’ve never seen this dog being walked - no wonder.

Kids play on the street. There is dogs everywhere. Also some children walk their own dogs (not mine but others do). What if that happened?

The dog was circling us and jumping up like something I’ve never seen before!

Bouncy dog. So what?

CurtainWitcher · 29/06/2020 17:30

Did you check the collar for a phone number etc?

Anney28 · 29/06/2020 17:39

Bouncy dog? In my face? I’m not scared of dogs but it was insane and also jumping around a toddler? It would have attacked my dog no doubt!
It was acting in an aggressive manner. Not an excitable manner. My own dog can be excitable and bouncy given the chance. This was pure aggression.

Couldn’t check the dogs collar when it was going towards my face! Stood on tip toes so it couldn’t quite reach my face and was protecting my dog. If I lent in to check it’s collar I probably would have bitten.

It bit it’s owner when the owner eventually came over to try control it!

You have no idea that the dog would have (not would OF by the way) attacked your dog.

What a non-event.

PanamaPattie · 29/06/2020 17:46

Report to 101. It’s an offence not to keep your dog under proper control.

Jumblebumblemess · 29/06/2020 17:47

You don't live on the south coast in Dorset do you OP? This sounds very familiar to a dog round here that has been reported numerous times and has attacked 1 child and 1 adult in separate incidents.

StormzyInaDCup · 29/06/2020 17:51

@CurtainWitcher how is this a non event? The dog escaped it's garden, scared an adult and a toddler then bit it's owner! I hope you don't own a dog.

Report it @Anney28. That must have been very scary for you both. Dogs should be under control.

Anney28 · 29/06/2020 17:53

Thank you. It definitely was an event. I’m a dog lover and certainly not scared of them. Not even this one really. I can stay calm but it was insane. Wouldn’t leave us or the other family alone and came back for me. Owner had to drag him away when he eventually turned up! It bit his owner.

I’d report to the local Dog Warden. Contact via local Council.
Owner at the least needs some advice on keeping the dog in and also about proper exercise for the poor thing.

Anney28 · 29/06/2020 19:04

Thanks all. I believe just a higher fence so it can’t jump it would be sufficient. I’ve never seen the dog being walked. I’ve seen the owners around but never the dog (worked out who they are now)! It just lept out of nowhere!
