To call and postpone the gas inspection?

I'm in the sheilding group and have stayed in the house and been super careful since March, I feel I've been bullied by my landlord, estate agent and the engineer into getting the annual gas inspection done.

I gave in and arranged it for the next couple of days but I'm getting increasing uncomfortable about it as it's approaching, I know he would be wearing gloves and a mask but I just feel so uncomfortable with him coming into the house, he'll have mixed with colleagues and been in people's houses doing emergency repairs and inspections in so many homes throughout the pandemic it makes me nervous as I also have a 10 month old and 7 year old, the 10 month old we don't know yet if he has the same condition as me that is making me shield.

This guy would have to go through the living room to go upstairs in the bathroom to get to the boiler and then back through the living room to go to the kitchen as we have gas hobs. I'd obviously clean everything after he'd left but I'd be so anxious for ages afterwards (I have really bad anxiety atm)

I get that as of the 6th I can go out and meet people of up to 6 but that's outside and with people I know. I'm just irritated because every year they give me a days notice and get shitty with me if I can't do it and it feels this way also. I've read up on the law and whilst it is required by law, when it comes to those shielding as long as the landlord has made attempts to book it and been in contact with the Tennant that would be acceptable to postpone.

DH says I'm just going to cause a fuss and that's the last thing I want but what was the point in me sheilding for 3 months if I'm going to be forced to have a stranger who has been here there and everywhere in my house that could cause risk?

Wwyd? Sorry for the long post, didn't expect to write that much.

OP, can you wait outside while the gas engineer is in your home? Then get DH to clean thoroughly before you go back in? I'm shielding too and I am putting off having various (non-urgent) jobs done in the house for now. I empathise with your anxiety about this. Flowers

Get it done. My partner was very very anxious when we had ours two weeks ago. Turned out there was an irregular leak in the shared hallway that could have been explosive if not found now. Never had an issue with a gas inspection before - would never ever miss one now.

@Crumpetsforthequeen
Have they completed a risk assessment?
Is DH shielding with you and not going out to work or shopping?

I rent privately and had mine a few weeks back after it being delayed back in March.

It was fine. I barely saw him and was never in the same room. I spoke to him on the phone beforehand and he told me to close the living room door while he checked the boiler upstairs, then he came down the stairs out the front door and in the back door to check the oven and gas metre.

It is a very minimal risk and it is a very important check. They said beforehand they would wipe things down, I’m not sure if he actually did but you could wipe down after for your own peace of mind.

One of my friends died because of a faulty boiler.

You’re shielding because your life matters, please get this done.

@Crumpetsforthequeen - this is the zoono71 stuff I was talking about.

Crumpetsforthequeen · 28/06/2020 20:03

@STGD thank you I'll look into that

Update: he didn't even turn up and when I eventually was able to get his number he said I'll just do it some time next week.

Can't be too important to him then 🙄

They cannot force entry, they were pushing their looknwith that one. Honestly they need to do the service for your own safety and won’t come anywhere near you, as long as they wear PPE there’s no chance of you catching anything from them, they will also clean everything they touch. The alternative is a gas injunction and the costs being assigned to you. At the beginning of lockdown shielding was a valid reason to postpone the service, but it is no longer seen that way

Yes of course they can. As PP has explained this is following a court order obtained by the LL not the engineer just barging his way in obviously.

He randomly turned up this morning without warning, no mask, no gloves, didn't wait for me to move before pushing past me into the house and then had a go at me for calling the letting agents yesterday to find out where he was. Told him to get the job done and get out.
