We found a bird...

We found this little on our path earlier, make no attempt to fly or move when approached.

I think it's a house sparrow, we've put him in a ventilated box with padding. Given some water in a bottle lid and left it for a couple of hours in a quiet room.

Just been to check and it's alert, so took it outside and tried to set it free. Little bugger was sat on my hand, tucked his head in and went to sleep. No attempt to leave.

What do I do? I admit I'm useless and know nothing about birds.

Ask on Facebook if there’s a bird rescue in your area

ScribblingMilly · 28/06/2020 10:43

Yes, go on to your local Facebook site & see if there's a wildlife rescue or someone on there experienced with fledgelings who will take it immediately. I had a young pigeon with no parents around & it was collected within an hour.

Try Facebook for your local wild bird rescue. They took two robin chicks my cat fetched home for me.

Hi everyone!

I'm so so pleased to report that the bird has flown away!

Just checked on him and tried to feed again. Wouldn't feed but was very active, hopping about the box.

Took box outside and put it on the floor and the little guy flew away, and was instantly joined by another bird (same breed and size).

He circled around and came to land in our hedge. Let's hope he gets some food soon!

I'm so happy!

That's a great outcome, clever bird.

Phew!

Soubriquet · 28/06/2020 11:45

Fantastic news

Sounded like it might have had a shock yesterday, like flying into a window or something, but a nights rest has helped the bird recover.

Cleebope2 · 28/06/2020 11:54

Well done on hopefully saving its little life!

Wonderful news and you absolutely did the right thing at the time, this little one was vulnerable and probably would have died if left where he was.

I'm thinking of buying another hanging plant basket just for this type of rescue, we've had a couple of nest sites destroyed by Magpies this year and have had to rescue the - far to young to be out of a nest - baby birds, having a spare make shift nest might be the way forward.

I'm so pleased your little rescue is ok and well done to you for caring.
