To consider going abroad for dental implants

I don't like my teeth. I have just had to have a molar removed. Once safe to do so, would I be unreasonable to go abroad (possibly Turkey?) to get a number of dental implants, as I have heard standards are really good and cost significantly less. Anyone got any experience of this/ tips?

DO not do it!!! There's a reason why they're so cheap there. Implants are expensive to buy and the training and equipment is also v expensive. I'm speaking from experience if you do it you'll end up paying more in fixing their work. Implants are great but you can get single tooth dentures if it's the aesthetics you're worried about

SuperMumTum · 26/06/2020 21:34

I've heard some good things. My brother got some dental work done abroad (not implants) and was very well looked after. You'd have to do your homework though.

LouLaBear23 · 26/06/2020 21:40

When you say ‘a number of implants’, do you mean an implant to replace the molar and then the removal of other teeth for implants or veneer type work?

Chesneyhawkes1 · 26/06/2020 21:42

Someone from my work got veneers in Bulgaria I think. They look good.

I hate my teeth and am considering doing the same.

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 26/06/2020 21:44

Great idea! I got mine done in Europe
However Turkey doesn’t have the best track record. Have you thought about some of the Eastern European countries?
You could combine it with a holiday 😉

Wishforsnow · 26/06/2020 21:44

Depends what country as most countries can practice in the UK so no difference in the dentistry you would receive

Inextremis · 26/06/2020 21:49

A friend of mine got hers done in Hungary, and she's very pleased with them.

Leflic · 26/06/2020 21:52

My friend has just had implants and it involved many stages including many cleaning and hygienist sessions, x rays, moulds, tooth shaping, drilling into the jaw, stitches, healing time, plugs put in ...loads of stuff.
It’s taken over a year ( although lockdown is a factor). No idea how it could have worked abroad.

Roussette · 26/06/2020 21:52

I've had two implants done here. I would not dream of having them abroad, cheaper. yes. But will you have all the consultations and endless measuring and fitting that I had? Doubtful

I've had my implants nearly 15 years now, I had a problem with one, now sorted.

I would rather save up and have them done here. I've heard of 'walk in' implants.
Madness, it is precision.

Roussette · 26/06/2020 21:53

The 'walk in' implants were abroad.

BeNiceToYourSister · 26/06/2020 21:58

I wouldn’t take the risk, personally.

IAintentDead · 26/06/2020 21:58

Turkey is a fabulous place to get your teeth done. I have friends that have had loads of work done in Altinkum and I'm having mine done in Fethiye when I can get over there. They were using full PPE when I went to look round a couple of years ago. Absolutely spotless.

I also get my glasses from there. I had them priced up in the UK after paying for an eye test. £585 they were going to cost for varifocal transistional lenses. I had my eyes re tested including ophthalmic examination (both of which were free whether I bought or not. Then £150 for the same spec as above. My holiday only cost £250 for flight and B&B so I even had some of my spending money covered.

It's cheap because the cost of living is much cheaper over there.

Like all things - Do your research.
Don't just pick someone you saw one good fake web review for.

Surroundedbycats · 26/06/2020 22:04

Try Dentale or similar. They train dentists to do implants but very supervised and guaranteed. It works out a lot cheaper!

Piglet89 · 26/06/2020 22:07

I lost an upper molar and I wouldn't even take the risk of having an implant here in the U.K. My tooth roots are very near the sinus and I’m petrified of the procedure breaking the sinus and ending up with a lifetime of sinus problems, which I have heard happen to others.

For me, it would depend on the position of the tooth and the aesthetic problem. As it is, I have a little denture which is fine.

Surroundedbycats · 26/06/2020 22:08

Meant to say they are in the UK

Pedallleur · 26/06/2020 22:33

Cheaper maybe? But any issues arising from them and you are going to have to go back or pay a dentist here the going rate. I discussed it when I had mine done and the dentist said he would not get involved with issues from dentistry done abroad as it may involve him legally and issues with his insurance

Blondebear123 · 26/06/2020 22:43

Don't do it.

healththrowawayx · 26/06/2020 22:49

Well depends on if you’re doing it because the consultant is genuinely highly skilled, or whether you’re just chasing a cheap price.

Remember if the price is too good to be true, it probably is....you don’t want to end up with teeth like that guy from love island! Don’t cheap out, it will cost you more long term if you need further treatment

magicmallow · 26/06/2020 22:53

you can barter them down over here. go to a reputable one, get quotes and ask them to drop the price. dentists love to barter (apparently!)

CheshireChat · 26/06/2020 22:58

Do you know any Turkish natives you can ask? Or any other countries like the Eastern European ones mentioned above.

I'm from an Eastern European country and would happily recommend somewhere decent. Also, could help interpret if absolutely necessary though a lot of dentists will also speak English.

The only thing- what happens if you have complications? Do you fly back or get it sorted here?

DramaAlpaca · 26/06/2020 23:00

@Inextremis

A friend of mine got hers done in Hungary, and she's very pleased with them.
I know three people who've had dental work done in Hungary and are very happy with the results.
Mangofandangoo · 26/06/2020 23:01

Do it OP - do your research ( just like you would in this country) and you'll be fine,

Mangofandangoo · 26/06/2020 23:04

And to the people saying don't do it - do you think the U.K. is the saving grace of all dental procedures? Can no country possibility be as good as us? Is that a bit closed minded?

There are plenty of countries that offer fantastic health and dental care

CheshireChat · 26/06/2020 23:40

Mangofandangoo This!!

Whilst there's horror stories from abroad, not all UK dentists are competent either.
