To think it's odd to be close family friends with your boss?

I was talking to my friend today, who said she's going for a social distancing bbq around her husband's bosses house, who are also their close family friends. My friends family and her husbands bosses family go on holiday together, spend New Years together, summer bbqs etc. They were not friends or knew each other prior to her husband working for his boss.

Aibu to think it is so strange to be so incredibly close with your boss. If I was to be that close with my boss, I know for a fact my co-workers would have a different relationship with me if they knew me and the boss was close friends. Anyone else out there close friends with their boss?

Well Ex-Boss now but yes. There was a group of work friends who became life long friends. We would all meet up for BBQs, nights out, anniversary celebrations etc.
If you click with someone why not form a friendship.
If someone can not be professional in work then that is a separate problem.

We're friends with my husband's ex boss (but have been friends since he worked for them) and attended lots of parties and social gatherings with them, so I don't find it unfathomably weird. But then I can't imagine being friends with any of my former bosses, so I do see how it might be awkward to stay professional if you have formed a relationship like that outside work.

Perhaps it depends on the industry- mine were office type 9-5 jobs, whereas they were spending time at events and travelling for work so you naturally end up having a more personal relationship when you're sharing 'downtime' like that rather than just seeing each other during working hours.
