My parents are due to fly out to stay with us in two weeks. Uk to Portugal.
Mum is late 60’s dad is early 70’s
They seem to have no worries about this and just want to see us. I’m desperate to see them also but can’t help but worry, would you feel safe with your parents flying at this time?

Can you not go see them?

Whatnext2018 · 26/06/2020 09:21

I can but I’d personally even wait a while longer, I have a 23 month old so am not keen about taking her on a plane at the moment. They’d booked to come in April and it was obviously cancelled and they’ve booked to come in September too.

@londongirl12

Can you not go see them?
...and quarantine for 2 weeks with a baby? Not really practical at the moment.
bluemolly · 26/06/2020 10:07

No travel insurer is going to cover them right now when only essential travel is advised, so I wouldn’t, sorry.

Destroyedpeople · 26/06/2020 10:09

I wouldn't want my parents on a plane right now tbh. They are flying disease vectors.

Whatnext2018 · 26/06/2020 10:11

@bluemolly I know, as much as I want to see them, I’m worried, they don’t seem worried though. Does that mean if they got sick they couldn’t go to the hospital?

OP posts:
Whatnext2018 · 26/06/2020 10:13

@Destroyedpeople Is there a marked increase on planes then? I am worried, I can’t stop them if they want to come, can’t understand how they’re not worried 🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
Floralnomad · 26/06/2020 10:13

It means if they get sick they will have to cover any bills themselves .

bluemolly · 26/06/2020 10:13

I don’t know - it depends what country you’re in. They might just have an enormous bill.

Whatnext2018 · 26/06/2020 10:14

I’d be fine flying over in autumn to them.

OP posts:
Destroyedpeople · 26/06/2020 10:16

I don't really know statistically speaking but surely that is how the virus spread so quickly worldwide...
Are they quite fit and adventurous? Would the be up for an overland trip in September? Like a ferry to santander and a long train ride?

Whatnext2018 · 26/06/2020 10:21

They’re fairly fit but Mum has asthma, I’ve just mentioned about travel insurance, they said they won’t have any but aren’t going out for the next couple of weeks and aren’t many cases where they are 🤷‍♀️That’s not really the point is it?
We’re in Portugal

Whatnext2018 · 26/06/2020 10:23

@Destroyedpeople The flights were already booked and paid for so I doubt they’d want to change them and want the hassle of a boat. I think they think I’m being dramatic to be concerned, they just want to get here and be with us, which I totally understand, but I’d wait

OP posts:
Spinakker · 26/06/2020 10:24

If they aren't worried then I'd go for it. Nothings going to be completely safe and they must feel willing to take the risk.

Destroyedpeople · 26/06/2020 10:24

Yes you said you were in Portugal. In your situation i wouldn't even consider having older people to stay who don't have travel insurance. That's insane sorry.

Zoomintheroom · 26/06/2020 10:24

I'm sorry but they are crazy if they don't have travel insurance. FCO advice is no overseas travel and they should heed that.

Whatnext2018 · 26/06/2020 10:27

@Destroyedpeople I know, I was saying I was in Portugal to @bluemolly who said it depends what country we’re in.

GreenPlum · 26/06/2020 10:28

I would never travel without comprehensive insurance, pandemic or not. I know two people who have had to be flown home (medivac) and it cost both over £30,000. I know another who's broken leg cost £42,000.

Whatnext2018 · 26/06/2020 10:33

@Destroyedpeople What do you mean in my situation? 🤔 I’m telling them all this but they’re saying they’ll wear masks on the plane, have temp taken at the airport etc

OP posts:
Sailingblue · 26/06/2020 10:39

If they want to take their own risk that’s one thing but I would not have them over to stay if they are uninsured. That’s just asking for trouble at the best of times let alone during a pandemic where they have higher risk of complications.

redwoodmazza · 26/06/2020 10:45

Travel insurance is a must really, OP...

NewnameOldposter · 26/06/2020 10:46

Do they have EHIC cards? They're still valid

Won't stop them getting I'll, but at least covers them to some degree for treatment.

Destroyedpeople · 26/06/2020 10:46

In your sitauto on. ..well you are resident in portugal right? And if they did need medical treatment while staying with you then you would get the bill I think they are being monstrously selfish tbh.

Whatnext2018 · 26/06/2020 10:53

@Destroyedpeople Yes we’re resident, had no idea we’d have to pay the bill? I’m not sure they know this

OP posts:
Whatnext2018 · 26/06/2020 10:54

@Sailingblue So it makes a difference then staying with us?
