Please-How to stay cool in this heat?!

BruceAndMarley · 25/06/2020 23:45

Help please !! I’m almost 31 weeks pregnant and this heat would be too much for me even before pregnancy but I honestly can’t cool down! I also suffer from seizures so keeping my body temperature down is really important but I’m really struggling . And the upstairs of our house is red hot, we’ve opened all windows , keeping all doors open to keep the airflow round the house , got fans on and I’m constantly using that cooling spray but nothing is working .
Any advise Mumsnetters? I’m sure one of you will have a good hack !

Hot water bottle put in the freezer for a bit to take to bed? I've heard good things.

Pipandmum · 25/06/2020 23:53

Keep your shades down. Put ice in water near the fan. Do not leave windows open that have sun on them. Put your feet in cold water bath.

Sparklesocks · 26/06/2020 00:13

Something that really helps me is a holding a cold wet flannel on the back of my neck, then collarbone and inner wrists - or ideally something from the freezer wrapped up. I don’t know if they’re pressure points but it really helps cool me down quickly.

I would probably invest in a window air conditioner for the bedroom if you are able to buy one.

rarotonga2 · 26/06/2020 00:28

I have temperature regulation issues so feel your pain. After the extreme heat last summer we have invested in an air conditioning unit this year. It is making the world of difference.

How much does it cost to run?
Rummikub · 26/06/2020 00:39

Cuddle an ice pack - works quite well
This heat is horrific!

Gulabjamoon · 26/06/2020 01:03

Last year someone suggested spraying water on your sheets to keep cool and that went down a treat. I didn’t try it.

Thanks everyone !

Live in France so we have some experience!

Open windows wide in the morning, earlier the better.
Close then as soon as the sun is getting hot.
If the sun is shining through, close the blinds / curtains / shutters if you have them.
Keep everything shut all day.
Only open them again late in the evening and only if it’s actually cooler outside.

During the day:
Cold bath / shower
Loose clothing
Water spray for skin / fan

At night, a damp towel lying over your body plus a fan will help hugely.

Feet in cold water as much as possible, game changer for me

MinnieJackson · 26/06/2020 07:47

Urgh you poor thing. I was melting yesterday and said to my mum, 'at least we're not pregnant!' It's just started to rain here (West mids) and I'm outside doing a rain dance. We wet some tea towels and put them in the freezer but it's a short relief!

AllTheCakes · 26/06/2020 07:48

Another small tip is to open the loft hatch if you have one. It lets some of the heat escape upwards.

Spiderysummer · 26/06/2020 07:50

I get a light fabric scarf and put it in cold water and wring it out and wear round my neck. It really does make a difference. What has really made the biggest difference to me is I bought a new fan - a Meaco 1056, pricey but not as much as a dyson but it is brilliant. For the first time in my married life we can have a fan on all night without complaints from my husband about the noise. It was the best £99 I have spent this year!

emilybrontescorsett · 26/06/2020 07:52

Just to add wear clothing made from natural fibres e.g. Cotton, linnen. Avoid anything made from polyester and nylon.
I second wearing lose clothing.I
Wear light colours too.

spottygymbag · 26/06/2020 07:59

Pet cooling mats kept in the fridge. Just survived an Aussie summer with 40+days, no air con and everything closed because of the bushfire smoke. These were a life saver and having two meant I could rotate them and always have one cold.

bluefoxmug · 26/06/2020 08:02

damp towel on your feet.
damp flannels on your wrists.

or feet in a washing up bowl with cold water.

if you use a ventilator, direct it to your feet.

lidoshuffle · 26/06/2020 08:08

Like a pp, I recommend a Meaco silent fan (it has a timer too) for bed - I went for the slightly smaller one.

I damp a muslin square and drape over my head and shoulders. It's very cooling, but I look like a scary nun Grin

Haffiana · 26/06/2020 08:54

Thirding a Meaco fan. They are wonderful.

Royalbloo · 26/06/2020 08:55

Yep, feet in a bucket full of cold water and ice - does your freezer need defrosting?

Piratesue · 26/06/2020 08:56

Run a cold tap over your big vein in your wrist. Instantly cools you down.

listsandbudgets · 26/06/2020 09:23

Sounds ridiculous but I sleep in a light cotton nightie with no other covers .. and with the weather we've been having lately put it on the freezer for an hour before putting it on Grin

Ginfordinner · 26/06/2020 09:23

I feel for you. Poor DD had to decamp to the living room to sleep because her bedroom was so hot.

The weather is going to break today, with much cooler temperatures to follow. It's going to be 10 degrees cooler here by Monday.

TeapotCollection · 26/06/2020 09:28

Another vote for an air con unit if you can afford to buy one, we got ours last weekend and we’re absolutely loving it - genuinely one of the best things we’ve ever bought

Don’t know how much they cost to run though
