Why are Brits so prone to littering ?

I'm not asking for your litter horror stories - we all have them. I'm asking for your thoughts on something that perplexes me. Just why is it that Britons are so prone to littering (and the oldies on here will confirm, that we have become much more so) - why we seem to litter so much more than countries?

Sorry, but it's not lack of bins round here, nor a lack of green space - it's lack of respect for their surroundings, a sense of entitlement and a good dose of twattery.

(Picking up rubbish thrown within 10ft of a bin on my dog walk through the beautifully maintained park this morning, as I regularly do. Boils my blood.)

@GrumpyHoonMain

In the past you could make money buy selling cans / bottles / cardboard / plastic bags to your local shop. Tailors would also take old clothes to reuse the materials .Can’t do that now so there’s no incentive.
Well, no incentive bar not making the place look bad, but that's obviously not 'incentive' enough for some. Why should we need an incentive to keep things decent?

People are selfish, it's not a british problem IMO and I won't pretend to understand the mentality behind it.

It's definitely worse here than abroad. You don't see stacks of litter in France and Spain. Having said that, we don't go where the Brits go.

The idiots in this country seem to think someone else will clear up after them. Our local park has rubbish stacked around the litter bins, which gets disturbed by birds and other wildlife. The wind also blows it around the park.

Take your rubbish home with you FFS.

Compared to parts of continental Europe I’ve been to I do feel we are bigger consumers of junk food and take aways as well as having a different attitude to alcohol. DD and I go litter-picking frequently and our top offenders are beer cans, energy/soft drink cans, plastic bottles (again once contained some hideous nuclear drink), crisp packets, sweet and chocolate wrappers.
We have an appalling attitude to food. We have a lot of newsagents selling utter shite and that’s not so common in Europe imo.

I think it's a lot worse here than in other countries.

Mind you, they probably empty the bins more often, but even so, people just dump rubbish even when there's a half empty bin a few metres away.

@corythatwas

*For everyone who complains about litter, I genuinely hope they pick a piece of litter up and throw it away. Yes, I do, often; but I would rather the cunts hadn't dropped the fucking stuff in the first place.*

This.

Oh totally agree with your take on what I saying, didnt intend on minimising the fact i shouldn't be there in the first place, if that's how it read. I absolutely cannot stand litter. I have done litterpicks on my own that have totalled up to 10 black bags. Absolutely disgusting.
rhowton · 27/06/2020 19:05

Maybe we should have more bins. Maybe people shouldn't put bombs in bins so they take away a lot of bins.

Agree, crap food and drink, and the wrong attitude to eating on the run, does create a lot more rubbish.

There was a bit in The Times yesterday about how Paris has become a shithole and the writer particularly mentioned the litter.

A lot of people are pigs (apologies to actual pigs). I was driving along recently and suddenly a Costa cup of coffee (with liquid) hit my windscreen, hurled out by the car driver in front. Who does that?!

JaffaJaffJaffpussycatpuss · 28/06/2020 12:26

I've heard that France has a higher budget for street cleanup and/or street bins.
