To ask if people in tourist areas are happy about tourism opening up

Thinking about booking a UK holiday end of July, probably a cottage somewhere in Scotland or Yorkshire. DH thinks people living in these areas will still be very unhappy to have tourists coming in, I was wondering if locals might be quite glad to have tourism related businesses etc starting back up now for the sake of the local economy. If anyone reading this lives somewhere like that, I'd love to hear you opinion on whether you'd be pleased to see tourists coming back or not and whether we should book?

@puffinkoala

You are right in saying that Cornwall has more than one hospital as it has several smaller community hospitals but none of these have an ICU and so have no capabilities when it comes to treating Coronavirus patients. So in terms of the current pandemic, yes we do only have one hospital in Cornwall that can treat Coronavirus patients or those with other serious illness/injury. Every other hospital only has a minor injuries department and some don't even have that anything more than a basic broken arm/leg you have to go to the one main hospital anyway as none of the other hospitals (except a couple of private ones) are equipped to deal with serious issues. On top of that, the one main hospital has less than 20 ICU beds meaning that it can't even handle a serious outbreak amongst just local residents, let alone if they had to take into consideration the influx of tourists who may also need intensive care if they were to get ill while they are here. Also saying that 'they can just go to derriford/other Devon hospitals' is a little unfair when for those who live in the far end of Cornwall in places such as Penzance that would would be around a 2 hour journey just to Plymouth, not considering if they had to go further afield. With a large population of elderly people, that is a very long journey to make if you are seriously ill and especially when there is a hospital much closer but you can't use it because it is being taken up by people who have travelled away from hospitals in their own home town.

Also as someone who has grown up in Cornwall a massive tourist area, you can't deny that it's a county that relies greatly on tourism, however most people I know, including some local business owners would still rather people wait longer before travelling down here on holiday. This is because everyone is worried about the hospital situation as well as the fact that we have a high population of elderly and vulnerable here and we have been lucky so far to have low Coronavirus numbers but that means that the majority of people travelling down will be coming from areas with much higher numbers of Coronavirus cases than we have had.

I live in the Highlands and feel quite mixed about it.
On one hand I'm delighted for the friends I have who rely on tourism for their income. Our area depends on tourism and businesses need visitors to survive. Lots of lovely people come to our area and it will be great to see the place busy again.

On the other hand, I am not looking forward to the ignorance and poor behaviour from some tourists. I'm not looing forward to the main trunk road being consantly closed due to accidents caused by arrogant driving and the fatalities that accompany it, the littering of the countryside, the people who 'wild camp' then simply walk away from all their rubbish the next day leaving it there for goodness knows who to clear up, the people who abandon cars and campervans at the most astonishing and dangerous places to take photos and those that think it's OK to slow down to 10mph on a busy A road to stick an ipad out the window and record their journey.

So basically, sensible tourists will be more than welcome!

I am a little nervous of a second wave but I think the Exec will act to stop travel if it looks like it will become an issue.

Highlands too on the overly promoted North Coast 500. Lots of seasonal/tourist businesses not reopening this year at all. Takeaways from cafes at weekends or very reduced hours only. Judging by Facebook posts, world and his wife heading here the minute tourism is allowed on July 15th. Fair dreading it as with nothing open, the only business likely to benefit is Tesco! Just more traffic on the roads

Realityofsen · 28/06/2020 07:32

I live in Bournemouth and I think there's a lot of resentment after the events of this week.

I know the general vibe is happy for visitors but not the ones who descended on us this week, it wasn't the normal crowd and to be frank they were vile.

Go on holiday but be respectful of the locals and remember it's still a pandemic.

DuineArBith · 28/06/2020 07:44

I'm really concerned that a number of tourist destinations near me may have to close completely, so the sooner they can reopen with proper precautions and people start using them, the better.

Snufkin2 · 28/06/2020 16:03

Than you for everyone's perspective in this. Having seen all the awful behaviour on the news and heard about people's experiences on here, I'm now thinking maybe we'll just go and stay with my Mum for a few days, she lives 3hrs away and haven't seen her for months because of lockdown. I'm sure we can make a bit of a holiday of it and plan something more exciting for later in the year or next year.

I live in the Lakes and I, like everyone else I've spoken to, have loved having the place to ourselves since March but the return of tourists is inevitable. People are coming already - on the sunny days they're swarming round the lake shores but they can't really spend much money as lots of places are still shut. If people are going to come then I'd rather they stayed and put money into to economy through accommodation, eating and shopping. Otherwise we get all the inconvenience and none of the economic benefits.

In short, locals accept it's going to happen and we need people to turn up and spend money rather than coming for the day, blocking the roads and leaving litter.

Italiangranny · 28/06/2020 16:30

Mixed. Not dependent on tourists myself, have not missed tour buses, clogged streets and rammed buses, litter, noise 24 hours, rammed cafes, people in the middle of the road taking selfies with traffic blocked round them, noisy AirBnB people making a racket up the stairs.
But shops, cafes, Theatres, pubs, museums, castles, hotels desperately need business and will toil this year due to major event cancellations so yes we do need some back - just sensible non littering and toilet trained ones! So @Snufkin2 You are welcome to come!

DivisionBelles · 28/06/2020 16:35

I'm in Cornwall and my job is in hospitality. On one hand I am looking forward to tourists returning as at least it will mean my job will be needed again. However, I'm also quite scared that a huge influx of people may bring the virus here with greater numbers being infected and that would be disastrous for the one hospital we have. I just hope people are sensible and adhere to social distancing.

BiblioX · 28/06/2020 17:16

We live rurally, and would normally love to see tourists but the truth is we have a tiny cottage hospital and hours to drive to a main hospital. We do not want visitors, even though we realise our economy will suffer people are more important.

SomewhereEast · 28/06/2020 17:18

I live in a twee Yorkshire market town which attracts day trippers in the summer & honestly don't care provided people are sensible & considerate. People from here will likewise head off elsewhere on holidays so we're not exactly in a position to eye-roll.

Notmyrealname855 · 28/06/2020 17:23

We’re south lakes and I’m hoping to book a trip away too... I want to stick to touristy towns and remote country campsites and hotels. I want a really chilled and fun break and don’t want to stress anyone out by going to an area that’s not dedicated to tourism tbh. Wouldn’t be relaxing for me or them!

Macncheeseballs · 28/06/2020 17:38

I know people who live in tourist areas that would welcome tourists with open socially distanced arms, not everyone is worried about the hospital situation

Casschops · 28/06/2020 18:13

Im off the opinion that although it must be anxiety provoking for people living in a tourist area its nòt owned by the people that live there. Everyone has as much right to enjoy it as they do. If you don't like it don't live there.

britnay · 28/06/2020 18:16

I'm in a touristy area in Yorkshire. Scenic locations have been rammed and so much litter has been left. I'm not looking forward to even more visitors :(
