Object stuck in ear. A&E?

SimplySteveRedux · 24/06/2020 06:48

I was listening to music last night with In-Ear Monitors and when I removed them I noticed one was missing its earbud. This happened around 9pm.

I cannot remove the object, it's a flanged earbud which makes things more difficult. I'm feeling sick, lightheaded and have a ringing in my ears. Substantial pain in the ear the bud is stuck in.

I'm thinking of leaving it a couple of days to see if the earbud works its way out, while DP thinks I should go to A&E. AIBU? I doubt it could be dangerous being there a few days.

A&e

Flamingolingo · 24/06/2020 06:51

Do you have a minor injuries unit? Either way it needs to come out

bengalcat · 24/06/2020 06:51

Go to A and E

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 24/06/2020 06:52

Do you have a hospital with a minor injuries unit? I had a similar issue and they were able to remove it

iMatter · 24/06/2020 06:54

Can you get an appointment with your GP/nurse practitioner?

I don't think a trip to A&E at 7am is unreasonable though. You might get seen quickly.

Good luck

SimplySteveRedux · 24/06/2020 07:05

There's no Minor Injuries Unit.

Why the rush to go to A&E? Is it dangerous if left?

I’d try nurse at local GP.
Or if you have a hearing clinic locally try that, it will cost you ~ £40 but may well be quicker and less burden on the NHS.

Thanosatemthamster · 24/06/2020 07:12

I assume it will work it's way in further if left. You're in pain and feeling sick - just go to a&e. It's not like you've got a gerbil up your arse. Wear a face covering.

Thanosatemthamster · 24/06/2020 07:13

When I've had similar fixed for a child they had different things they used to hoik it out including some kind of vacuum thing. I doubt your gp nurse would have that but could try.

because you said I'm feeling sick, lightheaded and have a ringing in my ears. Substantial pain in the ear the bud is stuck in.

But if you want to stay like that for a few days...🤷🏻‍♀️

Jessbow · 24/06/2020 07:15

nurse at GP surgery should be able to remove it.

No reason for it to make you feel sick or lightheaded. It wont do you any hard short term, any more that it would have done if you were simply wearing /using it normally.

Sandybval · 24/06/2020 07:17

less burden on the NHS.

The NHS is a health service, people using it for genuine reasons aren't a burden.

JustOneMoreStep · 24/06/2020 07:21

It's unlikely to be dangerous in the sense that you will drop dead but the lining of the ear is very fragile so the longer it's in there the higher the risk of damage to the ear canal and risk of infection.

When part of my hearing aid broke off inside my ear, my gp was able to get it out but it was a struggle. It was her 'last try' before sending me to ENT for them to remove it, so I'd say a&e isn't an overreaction but you could call your GP and let them try if you want to avoid it. Be prepared for them to send you to a&e anyway!

TinnedPearsForPudding · 24/06/2020 07:26

Very common presentation at A&E. Actually, it's one of my favourites - removing stuff from ears is strangely satisfying! (I'm working today in A&E, come see me, I'll get it for you)

SimplySteveRedux · 24/06/2020 07:31

I shall get ready to go. I'm not potentially going to need surgery, am I? And sure tinned you just pay for the fuel Grin

A friend of mine got the tip of a make up brush stuck in her ear when we were at uni and we couldn’t get it out. A&E got it out in a jiffy - they had special long tweezers.

PrayingandHoping · 24/06/2020 07:38

You need to go to A&E ASAP. I had a cotton bud (I know... but I suffer with eczema in my ears and have to apply cream) earlier in the year and rang 111 and was told I had to go within 4 hours. The advise was that specific as apparently damage can happen that soon

MissyNomer · 24/06/2020 07:39

I would go see a doctor at wherever doctors are where you are. I found somebody else that had it happen to posting in this forum. [[

bluefoxmug · 24/06/2020 07:44

yes go to a&e

picklemewalnuts · 24/06/2020 07:53

I went for a cotton bud. The nurse was lovely, said 'sure you're not supposed to but we all do...'.

SimplySteveRedux · 24/06/2020 08:46

Sorted sorted. They've let me keep the tweezers too!

Woohoo...! So satisfying and a souvenir....win win! Grin

SimplySteveRedux · 24/06/2020 08:54

Grin They couldn't get it, called an ENT Consultant and I heard them talking about surgery if he couldn't remove it. Got it first time, ears bloody sore now!

OP posts:
picklemewalnuts · 24/06/2020 09:27

That was quick! Well done.

LochJessMonster · 24/06/2020 09:38

Same happened to me and I tried getting it out myself and apparently caused quite a bit of damage in my ear.
Dr got it out easily.
