Child safety locks on cupboards

Sorry that this is not quite the right page, but at what age have you felt it safe enough to remove child safety locks? We have a well behaved 3 year old who doesn't try to get into the secure cupboards, but I still think it's far too young. A friend has taken theirs off. They have to learn what is safe & what isn't but with glasses, knives, cleaning fluids it's downright dangerous & the consequences could be catastrophic!

Never used them. Mines is over a year younger than yours and when I'm out the kitchen, the door is closed. All the unsafe items were moved to high cupboards such as cleaning chemicals etc when she started walking.

Also a firm no when tries to open the cutlery drawer or removing her when she doesnt listen usually helps Grin all sharp knives are in a block well out of reach!

If you dont feel comfortable then dont do it. Is it a possibility to move the cupboards? Or maybe give them a small cupboard of their own so they know that's the only one they're allowed into.

Hm, I think for us it was sort of a gradual process as he grew and understood dangers. He is now 7, and only one with a lock is the meds drawer. We have potentially dangerous stuff there, like ad or sleeping pills.

Never had child locks with our twins (now 3 and a half). The boy went through a short phase of pulling pots and pans out the cupboard. The girl never showed any interest.

If we didn't want them going in somewhere, we just said "NO" firmly, and closed it, and if necessary, removed the child.

He knows which cupboards he can go into & has not shown interest in the others since toddler age & knows what is in them. I've organised the kitchen as safely as I can with the space. But if you can't keep everything dangerous out of reach then 3 seems a bit young to me; but I don't want to be so over protective that I delay him learning what is safe & what isn't.

Never used them. I had a baby gate across the kitchen door so they couldn't be in there without me. We removed the gates when DC were about 3 I suppose, but never had any problems.

Too young to be able to get to cleaning products, mine are out of reach which I think is a better solution than child locks where possible. The damage they could do to themselves isn't worth the risk.

FelicityPike · 22/06/2020 11:21

We never used them either, just taught her not to go into cupboards or drawers.

insancerre · 22/06/2020 11:21

I have never used child locks

bubbleup · 22/06/2020 11:21

Never bothered with them.

If either of them tried to get into the cupboard under the sink I used to shout "no. Burny" 🤣

EmeraldShamrock · 22/06/2020 11:23

Keep the dangerous stuff up high.
All my cleaning products and glasses are up high.
Sharp knifes are in the block on a shelf. Others are tucked under the cutlery tray.
My DC loved going into the cupboards.

RedCatBlueCat · 22/06/2020 11:23

Depends on the child, and house set up. Some 3 year olds get told no a couple of times and give up. Some are back every time your head is turned! Some houses are easy to put cleaning stuff in hard to reach places, some dont. Personally, I dont like chemicals above eye level.

My kids are 11 and 9. The cat food cupboard still has the toddler lock on it, as the cats can open that cupboard!

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 22/06/2020 11:24

I just waited til they fell off, which wasn’t long as they are fairly crappy!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 22/06/2020 11:25

We had one on a top cupboard that had medicines in. I finally removed a magnetic tot lock when we moved house Dd was 7 but we had kept it on as we did foster care at the time and it was the rules.

blankethog · 22/06/2020 11:38

Never used them and I have an open plan downstairs so can't block off kitchen. DS just never really shown any interest in opening the cupboards and my cleaning cupboard is out of reach anyway, only food in bottom cupboards, the only time he ventures into the kitchen is to open the fridge or his snack cupboard to let me know he's hungry. DS is almost 2.

covidco · 22/06/2020 11:55

Cleaning products and breakables elsewhere (out of reach) but the other cupboards I just let her go for. DS has never been interested so I didn't have to move anything or lock anything but DD is a completely different animal!

DamitJanet · 22/06/2020 11:59

I used them, but stopped at about 2.5 (when we moved house) with the exception of the cupboard with the cleaning products in which has stayed on.

Camomila · 22/06/2020 12:03

DS is 4 now and can open the child locks and stairgate, but tbh with the cupboards he never tried to get into the cleaning cupboard, when he was a baby he wasn't ever in the kitchen or bathroom by himself and now he has no interest in them/knows he has to ask to touch them (we have a cupboard with dainty tea cups he likes to look at)

Mia1415 · 22/06/2020 12:04

I never used them. My son has just been bought up knowing not to go in the cupboards and not to touch cleaning products etc.

His childminder never had them either.
