To not understand why some people dont eat meat free meals

I do not call myself vegetarian but i eat meat rarely for health reasons (bowel cancer is common in the family) but i am happy to prepare it as my dh eats meat but enjoys meat free meals around 4 times a week. DC also eat meat free around 4 times a week. My siblings and their partners are also part time vegetarians and pre covid we all enjoyed getting together for meat free feasts.

When DM comes over, she refuses to eat anything without meat. Butternut squash soup? Needs bacon.
Halloumi fajitas? Needs beef.
Goats cheese and onion omelette? Needs chicken.
Plowmans salad? Needs ham.

AIBU to think ffs one meal without meat wont kill you!

I think it's often an age thing, in that a generation ago meals without meat weren't seen as complete and veggie food wasn't as prevalent as it is now.

That said, what a boring, unimaginative way to eat, and completely missing out on so many delicious meat-free foods from all over the world.

confusedbymyheritage · 21/06/2020 22:06

@JudgeTrudy

You are the ultimate unpleasant preachy vegan that gives the rest a bad rep.

@marvellousmaplesyrup aunt did not get cancer because she ate dairy. How incredibly insensitive and mean to say. She got cancer because of a mutation of cells which can be caused by anything from genetics to flying and everything in between and beyond. There are a minute number of cancers caused by only one thing, the vast majority of the time it's caused by a large mix of things and an unhealthy does of bad luck. Some things may contribute to cancer in some cases but even then with moderation it is highly unlikely.

I think you're deeply unpleasant for your judgmental views on people's diet, that's none of your business, but what is even worse is conflating that judgement with science to try and unfairly scare them into a diet choice to fit your own agenda.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/06/2020 22:08

Fuck me. That was really shitty even by my low standards @JudgeTrudy!

LastTrainEast · 21/06/2020 22:08

I can eat a meal without meat, but I like meat so I normally have some (or fish). Do you ever eat meat without veg?

goose1964 · 21/06/2020 22:12

Humans are omnivores by nature, this is shown in our dentitian, we have both canines for eating meat and molars for grinding vegetation. I once tried to be veggie but I really missed chilli con carne, veg chilli just isn't the same.

Sparklesocks · 21/06/2020 22:12

@JudgeTrudy do vegans never get cancer then? Or heart issues? News for me.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/06/2020 22:13

Actually apparently vegan diet heightens the risk of stroke, so there. No diet is perfect🤷🏻

Mistymonday · 21/06/2020 22:16

YANBU! But then I’ve never eaten meat or fish and have no idea why anyone would want to! Envy (not envy)

BeijingBikini · 21/06/2020 22:17

I agree, I grew up in a family where it was always meat + side and I got so sick of it. I don't like pies, I don't like slabs of meat like beef wellington, not keen on stews and absolutely despite roasts, the blandest meal of all.

We do eat meat but try and have some veggie stuff, like thai green lentil curry, lentil bolognese, pasta with fun "pesto" mixes from Goodfood, spinach and courgette lasagne, Chinese noodle stir fries.

I would love to eat more veggie food but have IBS and lactose intolerance, so can't really eat loads of cheese, beans, onions, pearl barley, chickpeas e.t.c. I personally don't see the point of quitting meat to then eat loads of cheese, cheese is so unhealthy and more cruel than meat IMO.

BeijingBikini · 21/06/2020 22:19

Oh and I can't eat that seitan stuff, once went to a fake meat restaurant in London and got THE worst bloating ever. It's like I was 9 months pregnant with farts.

LastTrainEast · 21/06/2020 22:23

"fortunately we won't have to put up with the 'it's not a meal without meat brigade' for too much longer" Actually Boshmama we're going to eat the vegans if meat gets scarce. You should taste pretty good after all that veg. Grin

"How do you know if someone is a vegetarian"
"just wait 5 minutes and they will tell you"

bigbluebus · 21/06/2020 22:24

DS 23 is like this. If he can't see the meat in a meal he asks where the meat is. The other day I told him we were havinv mushroom stroganoff for dinner. There was a whinge so I told him if he didn't like what i was cooking then he could cook - so he did - mushroom stroganoff with bacon bits!

Juo · 21/06/2020 22:26

I'm torn. I'd like to say I could do without meat.
Adult DS lived at home after uni until recently and because he is vegetarian I cooked mainly meat free for the family for almost a year. It was fine.
After he left I started cooking with meat again and realised how much I missed it. It's like eating in colour again after a year of black and white.
I don't miss halloumi one bit.

confusedbymyheritage · 21/06/2020 22:27

I'm sorry @bigbluebus but I think any kind of stroganoff with bacon sounds tastier Grin

LastTrainEast · 21/06/2020 22:30

@JudgeTrudy

YANBU. Some of the comments on this post disgust me. You feel like you’re entitled to the death of an animal at EVERY meal because you ‘prefer’ it? Wake up. Not every meal needs meat (in fact, no meal needs meat but thats a whole other argument that I’ll get hated for). I mean you;ve only got to blame yourself when obesity, heart disease and cancer come after decades of daily meat consumption
Dead animals are lovely! They taste so good.. As for your obsession with other people's diets that's something you'll need to work through.
LastTrainEast · 21/06/2020 22:31

Oh and it's not a death for every meal. Cows and pigs are quite large. Google it.

NinkiNonkiNikau · 21/06/2020 22:32

Well if you eat meat some of the time can you have those times be when she’s visiting? It shouldn’t be hard.

ProtectAll · 21/06/2020 22:32

I am a flexitarian, but not particularly keen on the meat substitutes.
I only eat meat or fish once per day at most and red meat less than once a week.
When out I look at the menu and may pick an expensive steak or other meat product if I am in the mood and haven’t eaten something like this for a while. But mostly I’ll have a salad, light pasta or fish dish

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 21/06/2020 22:35

@Indiemeg

A part time vegetarian is also known as a flexitarian.Usually someone who decides to eat vegetarian or vegan meals perhaps once a week or more.
Isnt this just normal eating Hmm I don't know anyone who has meat in absolutely every meal Confused
JudgeTrudy · 21/06/2020 22:36

@LastTrainEast

Oh and it's not a death for every meal. Cows and pigs are quite large. Google it.
I highly doubt the meat from your mince comes from just one cow though Hmm
SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/06/2020 22:37

Massive! My family together with another one used to buy a pig and hire a butcher for an afternoon. Killed, butchered, sausages made etc. Full freezer for 2 families! Basically everything was used. What humans didn't eat went to dogs.
I miss that. Never had tastier sausages.

And still I think vegetable meals are fine. Not quarn. Quarnmageddon isn't nice...

DopamineHits · 21/06/2020 22:46

I read that if everyone on the planet ate as much meat and dairy as the average American, we'd need three extra planets to grow enough crops to feed the livestock. We'll reach a point one day where governments will have to start encouraging us all to eat less meat, and not just for our health.

JingsMahBucket · 21/06/2020 22:49
@RiverCrossing by part time vegetarian i mean eats vegetarian 29 days of the month but will have a bacon sarnie if they want. didnt know of a better way to describe it
@reducingfootprint the word you’re looking for is “omnivore”. Most people are omnivores.

DopamineHits · 21/06/2020 22:49

I’m not interested in encouraging and enabling a silly childlike vegetarian/vegan ideal.

Yes, I'm sure it takes a very meat heavy diet to develop a stunning intellect like yours... Grin

PurpleDaisies · 21/06/2020 22:50

A flexitarian is someone who has chosen to use a wanky word for “I eat food”.
