To not understand why some people dont eat meat free meals

I do not call myself vegetarian but i eat meat rarely for health reasons (bowel cancer is common in the family) but i am happy to prepare it as my dh eats meat but enjoys meat free meals around 4 times a week. DC also eat meat free around 4 times a week. My siblings and their partners are also part time vegetarians and pre covid we all enjoyed getting together for meat free feasts.

When DM comes over, she refuses to eat anything without meat. Butternut squash soup? Needs bacon.
Halloumi fajitas? Needs beef.
Goats cheese and onion omelette? Needs chicken.
Plowmans salad? Needs ham.

AIBU to think ffs one meal without meat wont kill you!

Where does one source meaty breakfast cereal?

Institutkarite · 21/06/2020 20:22

I don't understand why someone would start a thread pretending to not understand why people eat meat.
You are not unreasonable to be a bit pissed if with your mother but stop with the faux pretending.
Preach away op, I think people like you are intensely annoying. As a faux vegetarian it's not up to you to pontificate on others eating habits.

HarlinRay · 21/06/2020 20:23

I’ve never referred to myself as a part-time vegetarian before but I’m going to now just to annoy the pedantic previous posters (PPPs). I’m actually a vegan who will eat eggs or dairy if it will go to waste otherwise (doesn’t happen very often, to be fair, now that my partner is also vegan) or if it’s been prepared especially for me by someone I’m a guest of (happened a few times when I worked and travelled in North Africa and the Middle East). The amount of people online who absolutely froth at the mouth because I still use the word vegan is hilarious.

saltycat · 21/06/2020 20:23

This whole vegan/veggie thing is another form of control.

We are slowly exiting a Coronovirus Pandemic.

Eat what you want and ignore the wannabe dictators. L of fkn L.

Institutkarite · 21/06/2020 20:24

Should say a bit pissed off.

EatsShootsAndRuns · 21/06/2020 20:25

@SadSisters

Hopefully this works Smile

It says bbq them but I roast them in the oven 180° for 15 minutes

This whole vegan/veggie thing is another form of control

In what way are you being controlled by the existence of a different diet / lifestyle to yours...?

In answer to poster above re ideas... This week I have cooked mushroom and leek rissoto with halloumi and salad, roasted butternut squash paneer tikka masala with all the usual curry trimmings, pizza with a gazillion toppings to taste and homemade coleslaw , Spanish omelette with sweet potato fries and salad.

heartsonacake · 21/06/2020 20:26

Because they’re awful and tasteless.

@EatsShootsAndRuns thank you so much, they look amazing!!

yearinyearout · 21/06/2020 20:28

My DH is like that, if he eats anything without meat he feels like he hasn't eaten properly. He was mortified when I made veggie lasagne the other day, but he ate it and loved it.

I could quite happily be mostly veggie (I'd miss a Sunday roast and the occasional cooked breakfast)

reducingfootprint · 21/06/2020 20:29

@heartsonacake maybe that because you cannot cook well? I found them to be bland before i got some good cookbooks!

covidco · 21/06/2020 20:30

I personally think most things are improved by meat BUT I will eat meat free meals, some are very tasty. I cannot stand any meat substitutes though (Quorn, sietan etc) and I'm allergic to all beans which tends to leave lentils and chickpeas! So meat free meals tend to be quite repetitive for me!

vanillandhoney · 21/06/2020 20:30

@chocolatviennois

I am on a low carbohydrate diet and it is hard to find meals that don’t contain fish or meat. However I would happily have butternut squash soup with a bit of grated cheese in or a mushroom omelette. When I imagine vegetarian food I think one would end up eating lots of pasta which makes me put on weight
There are loads of vegetarian meals that don't involve pasta!

Soup
Risotto
Baked potato/baked sweet potato
Couscous with various sauces/sides/toppings
Vegetarian moussaka
Various salads
Stir fry
Veggie burgers
Halloumi burgers
Pizza
Vegetable curry
Veggie chilli with rice
Burritos
Nachos
Tacos
Quesadillas

Plenty of meals don't need to involve meat or pasta.

bluefoxmug · 21/06/2020 20:31

yanbu
but I know people like that.
when such person visits us they can make themselves a ham sandwich if they 'can't live without meat'

saltycat · 21/06/2020 20:33

Sad Sisters,

The anti meat brigade are telling us what to do. That is obvious these days anyway. Plant based, vegan, veggie, save the planet and so on.

Feck that. They need a better message other than a dictat and control message
.
But the reality is, while lots of people will engage, many will not and will enjoy their burgers and steaks forever more.

Such is life.

Sparklesocks · 21/06/2020 20:38

@saltycat relax, it’s really not that serious. Nobody is going to snap that packet of bacon out of your hand in the Tesco queue...

SadSisters · 21/06/2020 20:40

The anti meat brigade are telling us what to do. That is obvious these days anyway. Plant based, vegan, veggie, save the planet and so on.

How is this different to advertisements for meat, singing the praises of british beef etc, or the ‘got milk?’ campaign...?

Feck that. They need a better message other than a dictat and control message

Who is dictating to you and controlling you? Do you see the presentation of alternative viewpoints as a form of control?

But the reality is, while lots of people will engage, many will not and will enjoy their burgers and steaks forever more.

Indeed. But I live in hope that either by choice or necessity people will realise that if we want polar bears, the Maldives and the Amazonian rainforest to still exist in 100 years we have to do something about the carbon emissions caused by our currently excessive levels of meat consumption.

iwilltaketwoplease · 21/06/2020 20:42

Well I always have a choice of what I want for dinner and it's always got some sort of meat in it.

I don't really think about it too much I just have whatever I fancy.

Sandybval · 21/06/2020 20:42

Does anyone know if there's a recipe thread anywhere for veggie meals? I've had a quick look but can't find one, would be good, I prefer recommendations rather than just recipes out of a book.

OchonAgusOchonO · 21/06/2020 20:43

@yearinyearout - He was mortified when I made veggie lasagne the other day, but he ate it and loved it.

Why on earth was he mortified? Had he invited the local Meat Eaters Club over for dinner and felt you let him down or something?

saltycat · 21/06/2020 20:43

Sparklesocks

I know thanks. But a rant is good now and then though!

piscis · 21/06/2020 20:44

I love meat, fish, seafood...but I don't understand people who need to eat it with every meal either, there are so many different things to eat out there, so many alternatives...tonight butter bean soup with vegetables (onions, carrots, tomatoes and spinach) it's delicious, filling and healthy (and cheap!).
Also, I'd rather eat better quality meat less often than cheap meat everyday.
