Hi everyone, I've been prescribed cilatopram (hope I've spelt it right) for depression and anxiety but have put off starting them as reading the possible side effects has scared me.
I've got a 3 month old and my partner is working alot at the moment and I'm worried it might affect me taking care of her properly. Also our relationship isn't the best right now which I've already posted about previously.
I'd love to hear anyone's experience with cilatopram.

I have been taking 40mg daily for over five years and I only had a couple of days of feeling sick and mild headache when I started, I can't imagine what I would have ended up like without it, I know it sounds dramatic but it did change my life - go for it!

MinnieJackson · 21/06/2020 08:57

@Azxo I can't believe he have you a week's worth, that's absolutely pointless. You poor thing! I also took citalopram throughout all of my pregnancys and all ok x

Greenandcabbagelooking · 21/06/2020 09:04

I took it for a year for anxiety. I did feel a bit grim for about the first month, but it was bareable, and certainly better than the panic attacks. I had a very dry mouth, no appetite, felt sick, and kept doing this weird jaw clenching thing.

It wore off gradually, and it was fine.

I'm on day 11 of 20mg. So far ok. I took them years ago and felt great so I know they work, just hoping they properly kick in in the next few weeks. So far, they've stopped me going between crying and being angry but I still feel flat. I'm still sleeping a lot. I remember from the 1st time that I felt brilliant by about week 5 and could face the world again. Right now I still dont want to leave the house but that will pass. Please dont worry - all drugs have side effects and you will know fairly early of these ADs are not the right ones. Either these, or another brand, will make you feel better and that can only be a good thing Flowers

DH has been on it for many years, probably 10 or more. It changed his life.
He said the only side effect was it made him a bit tired at the beginning, but I think it was because they made him relax.
I didn’t see any change for the first month of him taking them, but after that month he got better week by week.
The consultant who put him on them said he could take them forever, No need to come off them.

SteelyPanther · 21/06/2020 09:08

The sooner you start the sooner you will feel better.

Ladyconstance · 21/06/2020 09:08

I can see why it feels scary to start. Taking it literally has saved my life. 13 years on, it has enabled me to be truly me without being overwhelmed by feelings all the time. It’s helped me keep my most important relationships going as a mum, wife, friend, sister, daughter. Without it, I believe I would have lost all of those. The social consequences would have been far worse than any side effects . I’m pretty sure I would have lost my job, home and family spectacularly badly and become a raving, homeless smackhead. Try it, give it time and keep in touch with your gp if you don’t feel it’s right for you. Wishing you love and courage.

Have been on it for 18 months for anxiety. . It works really well. Have reduced my dose from 20 to 10 mg with no ill effects. I initially had some diarrhoea for a week or so but no other side effects.

Idontbelieveit12 · 21/06/2020 09:15

I’ve been on it for a few years for anxiety. Works wonders for me x

Sunbird24 · 21/06/2020 09:30

I’m on citalopram too. The best way to describe it for me is like when you get a new prescription for your glasses. You were so used to how everything looked with your old ones that it felt ‘normal’, then you get the new ones and there’s this period of adjustment but you realise that this is what the world is supposed to look like, and you wish you’d got them sooner!
Honestly, if you’ve been prescribed them, do take them, give yourself time to get through the initial adjustment period and then see how you feel. If they don’t work for you then there’s others you can try.

Im on 10 mg for the last 3 years. I tried to come off it last year but the anxiety reared it ugly head and I went back on it. For me if swallowing one tablet a day helps me cope with life without feeling overwhelmed im all for it. I dont have any side effects at all. Sex drive improved, probably because im not riddled with anxiety anymore. I did it for me and my family and now Im a relaxed parent and wife as opposed to a short tempered one. I can cope with everyday life without feeling stressed. Before the pandemic would have sent me in a tailspin.
Absolutely go for it. For me the first 2 to 3 weeks were fine. Small bit of nausea and a bit dulled, but I kind of enjoyed that because for the first time in my life I didnt give a shit. Twas lovely. After the initial few weeks I was able to feel feelings in a measured way. Changed my life

Azxo · 21/06/2020 11:26

Thanks everyone I'm so glad you've all had positive experiences and I hope mine is going to be too. I'm going to take my first one tonight and hopefully feel alot better and if not keep trying till I find something that works, I guess it's the anxiety and hopelessness that's been making me hesitant till now.

It took about 7/10 days for me to feel an improvement. By about 3 weeks I felt like my old self.

amprev · 21/06/2020 12:02

I take 10mg a day and it helps reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines. Start at 5mg for a week to reduce the initial side effects listed above. The nausea etc are not intense in my experience and probably won't stop you functioning. Good luck.

bridgetreilly · 21/06/2020 12:22

Start!

I had two weeks of feeling more tired, and a little bit dizzy/nauseous, but on day 15 woke up feeling like my old self again. It was amazing.

bridgetreilly · 21/06/2020 12:24

Oh yes, I'd forgotten. Good idea to take them before bed, so you'll be less likely to feel any side effects during the daytime.
