House move - to clean or not to clean?

Hypothetical at the moment as not looking to move until the Spring. But thinking of our home, when we bought it 5 years ago we were very pleasantly surprised to find the place pretty clean, despite the fact that completion wasn’t occurring on their home until the same day. We left our rented place professionally cleaned as required under our contract.

What are people’s views on cleaning when selling a home? Do it yourself (if so - how do you manage alongside packing and removals?) or get a professional in (timing?). What have been your experiences when buying? The thought of moving in to somewhere dirty is horrible, has anyone experienced?

Sure COVID might change this, maybe we’ll see professional cleans as part of the contract now.

I planned on leaving our last house spotless with a nice bottle of wine and a card for the new owners.

However the couple who bought it in the end were such a pain in the ass that we didn't even hoover. I stopped short of taking all the lightbulbs though Blush.

...we do regularly clean though, so it's not like there were any really grim bits, it was just a bit dusty.

We paid for a deep clean right before we put the house on the market. But a mixture of them not doing a great job and it taking a long time to move meant it all had to be done again.

I did the jobs that wouldn't need redoing in the weeks leading up and then did another big clean a couple of days before. We left the house spotless. When moving into the next house - it wasn't as clean (they hadn't scrubbed inside the kitchen cupboards for example) but it was probably 90% there so we were able to move in without spending days cleaning

I always clean my house before I leave it ( on house 5) .. it’s just basic manners isn’t it!

I scrubbed my last house and had a bowl of water cleaning the floor backwards as I left it so it was clean ..

im always surprised it’s a legal requirement for renters and not when you are spending 100’s of thousands of pounds !

I had my house sparkling clean - declutterred, painted walls, washed curtains, garden tidied, garage door painted etc.

Everyone commented how well maintained the house was. I think there’s no harm in
