To get the rage seeing 'loose' instead of 'lose'

Calyx72 · 20/06/2020 22:03

I mean come ON

Lose and loose don't even sound the same

It's just so annoying Angry

Anyone else feel the same?
Any other rage inducing errors out there?

Calyx72 · 21/06/2020 00:12

As I mentioned upthread - rage is an exaggeration. I'm not mocking anyone. I just wanted to bring it up for a laugh, a chat, and to bring it into the public eye a bit again.

I also thoroughly dislike breath for breathe as cardibach pointed out there Confused

Another tedious thread on spellingHmm

cardibach · 21/06/2020 09:06

@2020times

No *@cardibach* - it's because these threads always have a mocking tone. It IS snobbery. Otherwise the discussion would read more like "I'm really interested in language and I'm concerned/confused why some people make mistakes- can you share your understanding of it?"

Which isn't what anyone has said. If people can't spell, it's likely for a few simple reasons - they aren't as clever as you, they haven't had the opportunities you've had or they have an innate learning difficulty. I don't see why any of those reasons would lead a person to feel rage or mock another person.

I’m not confused though. I’m an English teacher. I know that some people make errors because of learning difficulties. I spend my working life trying to help them. What doesn’t help is people saying it’s only snobs who care. Lots of people care, including those looking at application forms. Aiming for higher accuracy is of benefit to everyone.

And lots of people make errors because they didn't get a good enough education. Learning difficulties isn't the only reason for people not being shit hot at English.

HugeAckmansWife · 21/06/2020 09:14

Getting 'fewer' and 'less' wrong irritates me. Its not that hard and often it is wrong on 'official' posters or notices.

Ickabog · 21/06/2020 09:21

@Divebar

Oh yes ect and loose - top two offenders every time. I want to correct it every time. The ones I have problems with are effect and affect. ( it doesn’t mind how many times I look it up I can never remember it when I come to use it)
Effect and affect are also my weakness. I have to check every time, and often reword things to avoid using them. Blush
RightIsRight · 21/06/2020 09:23

You should get help with those anger issues, OP. It's not healthy

mangomama91 · 21/06/2020 09:26

We're instead of we'll !!!!!!????

If people can't spell, it's likely for a few simple reasons - they aren't as clever as you...

How clever do you have to be to know that "would of" or "alot" is incorrect, when every book, newspaper and magazine uses "would have" and "a lot"?

And lots of people make errors because they didn't get a good enough education.

Obviously standard of education vary enormously, but some of these errors are the linguistic equivalent of leaving school without mastering basic addition and subtraction. If you don't have a learning difficulty you have to work pretty hard not to absorb these absolute basics.

GinDaddyRedux · 21/06/2020 09:51

It’s annoying, but actually I think they should be the other way around as lose sounds like the long vowel sound is spelt double o

While this may seem sensible/obvious to some, it's one of the reasons why I HATE all this "phonics" stuff that has become the norm in schools and so on, it leads to this kind of thing. When I was a child I learned how to read and write by following the rules. If something didn't make sense, if Leicester didn't seem like it should sound like how it's spelt, so what - you learn, you remember, you retain it.

At the end of the day the number of weight topics on here where a poster comes on and says "Help I can't understand why I can't loose the weight" instantly means I end up frustrated trying to read it. As a PP says, it jars tremendously as you immediately lose (no pun intended) the thread and have to re-read to sense check.

The users of the word "loose" in this context also tend to be the types who write in long breathless sentences without paragraphs, who tend to randomly not capitalise an "i", who tend to say "should of", etc.

2020times · 21/06/2020 12:57

Why you anyone work hard NOT to learn something?!
Seriously, what is your rationale for people not knowing this stuff?

percheron67 · 21/06/2020 13:47

"for free"! What on earth - it is free, just that. When someone calls me and says "who is this? . What an American affectation.

LoseLooseLucy · 21/06/2020 13:48

A little bit 😬

RedCatBlueCat · 21/06/2020 13:54

Loose and lose are 2 words I couldn't actually read to you without them being in a sentance for context.
I have no idea which one is which, and have to Google the meaning each and every time I want to use one of them.
They just don't make sense to me - and yes, I'm dyslexic.

Apileofballyhoo · 21/06/2020 14:08

Affect and Effect. Stick 'the' in front of the noun and the two 'Es' are together. "The effect."

Say them differently in your head. 'Eh-fect'. 'Ah-fect'.

Calyx72 · 21/06/2020 15:50

@LoseLooseLucy

A little bit 😬
I like your username Grin

Totally agree with you OP. Its such an easy one to correct. It makes me feel queasy on FB when people write "I'm going to loose my shit"

Ewwwwwww !

iwilltaketwoplease · 21/06/2020 15:59

I've only just started to think if I'm using the correct word with brought and bought!

LolaDarkdestroyer · 21/06/2020 16:01

The rage? Really can't say I'd waste my energy you must have a very carefree life to get the rage over this shit. I went to the shop today and brought some flowers, there lovely I've put them in a nice vase on my Chester drawers. Bet your arse is twitching now op.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 21/06/2020 16:25

I am with you OP. It annoys me no end too.

And I don't think it is to do with not being clever enough or not having had good schooling. My DD is straight As in English and is certainly not dyslexic. And she once in a text said brought instead of bought. No idea where it came from, definitely not from lack of education, but here you go. When I asked her she said: oh I just wasn't thinking. I cannot comprehend how one can confuse the two at all.

Zaphodsotherhead · 21/06/2020 16:35

Discrete and discreet. Honstly, discreet (correctly used) almost seems to be being phased out of the English language - everyone seems to use 'discrete' (incorrectly).

candilemon · 21/06/2020 16:40

Discrete and discreet

Some people do not even know the difference in meaning.

candilemon · 21/06/2020 16:41

Another one I find hugely irritating is the mixing up of phase and faze.

candilemon · 21/06/2020 16:41

Effect and affect.

Tumbleweed101 · 21/06/2020 16:43

Find it jarring but autocorrect constantly mangles my posts without me noticing, so I expect it’s doing same to others.
