Hi I am a childminder looking after 3 under 2 four days a week and 3 after schoolies 3 days a week. My dh has been shopping round for car insurance on the internet for himself and as there is no childminder box or equivalent on the form under spouse occupation he has just told me he has ticked housewife as I am at home all week
AIBU he could've ticked self employed, there wasn't a box that said general dogsbody!

Might get cheaper insurance if you're a housewife rather than self employed.

Having said that, might be classed as telling lies. You are self employed you see. Hmm.... YANBU.

edam · 24/09/2007 22:28

He's a cheeky so-and-so. Tell him fibs invalidate insurance!

KaySamuels · 24/09/2007 22:32

YANBU
You are self employed. You run a childcare business. You do your own tax returns and accounting, you draw up contracts, receive inspections from ofsted, have meetings with clients, perform risk assessments, record observations and report on children's development and behaviour and lots lots more.
DP would fear for his life if he described me being self employed as a registered childminder as - housewife.

octoandflash · 24/09/2007 22:33

If you use the car for your work then you need to tell them.

YANBU - mine would do the same!

OFSTEDoutstanding · 24/09/2007 22:36

Its not that he is telling a fib that annoys me I don't use his car with any of the children even my ds as I have my own. It is the fact he can discredit what I do by saying I am a housewife. I have not got 6 bloody kids only 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

stupid expression anyway - my Mum always used to say "I'm married to my husband - not the house"

LyraBelacqua · 24/09/2007 22:47

YANBU.
My DP once described me as a 'housewife'. I'm a journalist (working one day a week). I nearly took his head off!
And we're not married so 'housepartner' would be more accurate

Soggy1979 · 24/09/2007 22:50

I don't know how to start a new conversation

Try the NCMA for insurance as they were cheaper than anyone else for me.

Then he will ask NCM who???

MaureenMLove · 25/09/2007 10:02

Cheeky swine! I bet he gladly helps you spend the money you earn though, doesn't he!

Poledra · 25/09/2007 10:13

Yanbu! Without my most excellent childminder, I would not be able to go to work confident that my children are safe, happy and loved. It is a hugely important job and I take my hat off to anyone who does it. I find it hard sometimes when I have just my 2 to look after on my own, and it can only be more difficult to look after other people's children. And as KaySamuels said, you run a business, with all the attendant paperwork, assessments etc.

ju · 25/09/2007 10:23

YANBU OO.

You are a successful business woman, can he not see that ?

With many professional qualifications !

Or is it that because you are working from home that he sees CMing as being a glorified housekeeper/babysitter.

(My MIL does, that's why I ask)

Grrrrr

hmm - yanbu, but... when I was ringing round for car insurance the other week, the bloke said "so you're unemployed then?" I said "no... I stay at home and look after my children" and he said "I'll just tick unemployed then"

Argued with the bloke for a good couple of minutes before we settled on housewife.

PestoMonster · 25/09/2007 12:05

I once put Household Manager on one of those forms, because 'house-wife' seems such a belittling term.

LyraBelacqua · 25/09/2007 12:43

The term housewife suggests that all you do all day is hang around the house doing not very much, but I'm a (mostly) SAHM and during the day I'm out more than I'm in. The term should be abolished imho.

Shoshable · 25/09/2007 13:04

Insure your car as a Motorminder as a childminder, we found it was 300.00 cheaper as Childminders are counted as safer drivers, this included business insurance

MrsTittleMouse · 25/09/2007 13:04

I do wish that there was something that would indicate that I'm caring for DD, and not just a "lady who lunches" (fat chance!). Why can't there be a Childcarer category (although I can see that it would have to distinguish between me doing it on an amateur basis for my own DD and OFSTED who is self-employed).

Rubybees · 25/09/2007 14:58

YANBU - grrr dh would get a slap for that one from me

lucyellensmum · 25/09/2007 15:35

Decides to be the dissenting voice

Fair enough if you're not a housewife because you actually have job title - you're self-employed. Simple.

But t'ain't nuthin' wrong with being a housewife.
