Ocado warehouse incident

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 19/06/2020 20:42

Has anyone else gotten a text saying the Ocado warehouse was evacuated due to an incident in a nearby building and to expect higher number of missing items and substitutions?

Lots of conspiracy theories here on the "incident"

*I know I am lucky to have an ocado delivery and am not stealth boasting!!

I had the text and my shopping arrived 2 hours early! Unfortunately minus my frozen peas though!

GottenGottenGotten · 19/06/2020 21:38

Gotten? Is Ocado in the USA?

Not this unsubstantiated nonsense AGAIN!

Gotten a) is a perfectly valid word and
b) has been used in some areas of the UK (including where I come from) for as long as I can remember. I am nearly 50.

It is NOT a US import.

MitziK · 19/06/2020 21:52

If a warehouse hasn't gone up in smoke again/somebody set a fire alarm off by accident, I would imagine that the computer system for deliveries/picking crashed.

They're the main incidents that affect every job I've ever had. Hardly the stuff of conspiracy theories.

Inkpaperstars · 19/06/2020 22:00

@GottenGottenGotten

That is interesting. It probably was imported from parts of the UK to the U.S. then. I didn't know they'd gotten it from us and not the other way round. I suspect though that if there has been a recent increase in the usage of gotten in the UK it has come via exposure to American English speakers on social media, tv etc.

GottenGottenGotten · 19/06/2020 22:08

I totally agree that it's use has probably increased because of our exposure to US culture, but it is commonly used in my corner of Scotland and I think also in Northern Ireland (but I could be wrong)

Gotten is to get what forgotten is to forget, so it's not grammatically unique in English.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/06/2020 22:15

The OED states that 'gotten' is North American / archaic, so it's just out of common usage here, rather than wrong as such.

SirGawain · 19/06/2020 22:22

@JLbaby such a pain as we are trying to use ocado slot only and not go to shops (asthma and other underlying conditions in household) so it is frustrating but clearly this is one of those things that can't be helped.
Hopefully the wine comes
Because all that matters is your wine. Get real!. If it is the Erith incident People have been injured, health of residents put at risk, property damaged and possibly jobs lost, but you delivery slot and wine is more important than all that!

Who would have thought we would ever be in the position of an Ocado delivery being a "stealth boast" Grin

FlamingoAndJohn · 19/06/2020 22:25

Which warehouse/distribution centre?

I've never 'gotten' anything in my life @mumsiedarlingrevolta.
Got, perhaps, but gotten? Nope. Not in the US.

Shakespeare used it. Smile

This is the message

Dear Mrs xxxxxx
One of our warehouses was evacuated today as a precautionary measure, due to an incident in a nearby building. Unfortunately, this meant we were unable to accept deliveries to that site from suppliers. As a result, your order this weekend may have a higher number of missing items and substitutions than usual. We’re really sorry for any inconvenience this is likely to cause.
Thank you for patience and, as always, for shopping with Ocado.

I'm Irish and I still haven't gotten over the last 'Halloween is an American important' thread but for the slow learners: we're right beside you lads. We're your nearest neighbours and we (mostly) speak the same language.

We do lots of things a bit differently, many of those we exported to America, many of those are now more widely know because you watch their tv but gotten is an English language usage that never fully died out in parts of the UK and is v widespread in Ireland. I haven't seen normal people yet but I'm sure someone must say it at some point. Not everything is American, and equally not everything American is worth sneering at.

One thing we don't have in ireland is Ocado deliveries or Waitrose. That is a crying shame.

I had an Ocado order cancelled on the day my order was due to be delivered because their depot had caught fire, it was completely destroyed.

KimKardash · 19/06/2020 23:35

I live in erith and we heard the sirens, air ambulance etc - it wasn't Ocado but a nearby factory

Osirus · 19/06/2020 23:42

I had this text from Ocado too, saying it was going to be late due to the incident, but luckily, my order arrived half an hour early, with no substitutions. All normal here.

leli · 19/06/2020 23:59

My Ocado delivery for this evening was cancelled! £15 voucher issued.

copperoliver · 20/06/2020 00:11

What distribution centre was on fire please. My brother in law works for them. X

MrsFrisbyMouse · 20/06/2020 07:53

Gotten is perfectly correct English, just a dialectic variation using the old past participle. Common all over, and to be celebrated at part of the very diveristy of language in the UK.

If anyone is interested the British Library has a whole section in their website archiving and discussing this stuff. It's a rich part of our cultural heritage.

This extract is from Yorkshire, but I used gotten in the North East.

It wasn't an Ocado site just somewhere nearby
GottenGottenGotten · 20/06/2020 08:34

@worriedmama1980 I'm Irish and I still haven't gotten over the last 'Halloween is an American important'

Yep, that too! Trick or treating was most definitely a thing in the 70s, and most probably before then (but I don't remember that far back)

@MrsFrisbyMouse I nearly put the North of England too, but wasn't sure. Thanks for that!

FlamingoAndJohn · 20/06/2020 11:23

I asked my delivery driver about this. He said that where they could drivers from his depot were taking on deliveries from the effected one.

60sPony · 20/06/2020 11:24

Hmm I didn’t get a text and just got a recipe with not one missing item or sub so it is obviously not affecting the SW London area
