To think Aldi are shooting themselves in the foot?

Most people who shop at Aldi will be aware that a lot of the products have a non identical twin. For example, the sliced turkey I normally buy for my son comes with sliced chicken. The pots of joy desserts come with an alternative banana flavour. The problem is that one of the products is always more popular than the other one. In my local Aldi they are only currently selling the least popular of the two on some of their products. So I don’t buy it. I am pretty sure I am not alone. Which means, surely, that they’re losing sales?

I know it's cheap and that is why people shop there, but I really don't know how people can shop in places like lidl and Aldi. I find the whole experience so stressful (and I only ever go in there to get milk for work)

Confused What's stressful about it?! It's brilliant. Saves me a fortune, takes me far less time than shopping elsewhere.

Oh and whoever was appalled by the salted pretzel chocolate... we tried it recently and it is delicious!

jillandhersprite · 19/06/2020 09:00

Fruitpastille - ha ha that's so funny because in our house we only like the black pepper or Seasalt crackers and avoid the rosemary ones!!!
Our particular bugbears are the long life not from concentrate juices - we like orange and hate it when it's only apple in there.
The other one lately has been my daughters favourite soup - tomato and basil, but there's only been pea and ham in the trays for the last few shops...

PennyArrowBar · 19/06/2020 09:06

I love Aldi, I've been consistently impressed with them throughout this whole pandemic. Our local ones have been brilliant.

I was an Aldi shopper before but have sacked off ASDA and Tesco for the most part recently.

I didn't know they donated their wasted food, so I'm now a convert entirely.

God my tastes must be terrible because every variety people are complaining is left over is the one I like :o :o

Bluetrews25 · 19/06/2020 10:06

All you ones who don't like aldi can just go back to waitrose, and leave the good stuff for us. Away, now!
I luffs aldi.
So excited to see they had lentils in again yesterday.
They still have no bread flour, but that's the same every summer, I've noticed.

Me too, I hate chicken on pizza, peppermint tea or sugar free tonic.

Makemeaname · 19/06/2020 11:19

One I've noticed is the flavoured sparkling water - there's always tons of lime left and no elderflower or apple&raspberry. In multiple local branches. I've heard the staff before commenting that the apple&raspberry always goes on the first day they get a new case, but then they can't put a new one out for like a week because nobody buys the lime.

knobblykneesandturnedouttoes · 19/06/2020 13:55

@MrsJackRackham I was also devastated about the chipotle mayo. Couldn't get it anywhere else either. However, I now buy a jar of chipotle paste, and mix with normal mayo. And I think it's even better. (Chipotle paste is available at Tesco and ASDA, but haven't seen any in Aldi)

Proudboomer · 19/06/2020 14:14

I love Aldi. Their peach squash is 69p and better than Robinson’s peach and raspberry at £1.50.
They do a Large pack of ham ends for £1.75 which is all useable ham no lumps of fat or slimy bits.
The super six they do each week of fruit and veg always contains decent offers not just the usual cheap stuff. This week there is peach’s for 45p.

I started to use Aldi as I wanted to boycott Tesco but I find I now prefer them . Not only are the cheaper but I find their products better and the few bit I want that they don’t sell I can pick up elsewhere on my way back. I will never go back to one of the big four supermarkets.

poppet31 · 19/06/2020 14:46

I buy my nappies from aldi so usually pick up a few other bits when I'm in. I used to love their caramelised onion quiche but sadly, I've not seen it in ages so I fear it's been discontinued.

MrsJackRackham · 19/06/2020 15:48

@knobblykneesandturnedouttoes oh please don't tease me, it's not fair but I'll give it go. I've half a tub left and rationing it Smile

Ginandbearit1 · 19/06/2020 16:56

Yanbu, my local store has become a mess with crap supply issues. I will return after covid, for the moment it is Tesco for me.

PotholeParadise · 19/06/2020 17:08

I keep finding that tinned butterbeans are out, which IIRC are twinned with cannellini beans.

I hate cannellini beans and I am desperate for someone else to come and buy all the cannellini beans so they open a new box.

BertieBotts · 19/06/2020 17:19

I suppose they must find that the number of people who look at a box where their preferred variety of product is sold out and say "Oh well, won't bother then" is small enough that it doesn't matter overall to their products.

Perhaps where the local preferences are opposite the stores could get together and send each other the excess stock, swap? :) We used to do this when I worked at CeX. Transfer anything that was overstocked out to other branches.

dworky · 19/06/2020 17:49

It'll be a stock issue. Aldi are notoriously bad at keeping items in stock.

Mrsmadevans · 19/06/2020 18:08

Elderflower sparkling water, red pepper bubble bath , salted caramel yogurt , Aldi bio washing tablets. 6 pkts of smoky bacon crisps , cheese & chive potato sticks , Maple and Pecan Crisp cereal , hot chicken curry tinned , Olive oil 1l & frozen smoked haddock. Shortage of all this in mine Hmm

Mrsmadevans · 19/06/2020 18:09

& no Solero type lollies either my faves!

notso · 19/06/2020 18:17

PP's who like the rosemary crackers should come to where I live as that's all usually all there is, and none of my beloved sea salt ones.
The only things I buy from Aldi are those crackers, the fake vanilla Aeros and the brownie bombs and all are the first to go!

Gwynfluff · 19/06/2020 18:24

We need an Aldi Swapshop

TheGoodDinosaur · 19/06/2020 18:42

I only came on to say their cauliflower cheese pies are the best thing I've ever bought from there. My DP moans about aldi so I tend to mainly go to Tesco. Sometimes I treat myself to an aldi shop just so I can stock up on those pies.

Iliketosmile · 19/06/2020 18:46

Mixed 6 foot tower of still and sparkling water. Noone ever buys the still one and I have to go mining for sparkling. Grr.

Longdistance · 19/06/2020 18:48

It’s the same in Lidl’s. Ever product is like this. Say mustard jars, Dijon, English, whole grain. One I dc always more popular than the other. Yesterday, salad dressings, Caesar, French, vinegrette, loads of Caesar gone. Same with the porridge pots, blueberry and apple, cinnamon, plain, syrup, loads of plain left.
I was having this exact conversation with dh earlier strangely enough.

HogDogKetchup · 19/06/2020 18:49

They have less pickers that are able to work because of social distancing in their distribution centres, that coupled with more demand has meant they have had to prioritise lines.

NewCatMummy · 19/06/2020 18:56

The aloo saag is my problem- always loads of the Bombay potatoes that no one wants and I’m pulling the boxes out trying to find aloo saag! Ditto the proper tonic and the fake blood orange san pelligrino- why not put in more of the flavours people actually like?!
