To just want my money back from Aldi now?

NC for this.

I bought 3 large items online from Aldi. When they arrived all 3 were of very poor quality, made from flimsy materials, badly manufactured, faulty and damaged. They were just not fit for purpose, basically. I rang Customer Services - there was no email address - and they arranged for a courier company to email me to arrange collection. I was warned by the Aldi lady not to leave the items outside, even though they are damaged and for the garden, because if the packaging got wet the courier would refuse to take them and I would not get my refund. So far so good, sort of. The courier XPD then did not turn up to collect the items on the day. I rang Aldi again. They could provide no reason for the failed collection but a pleasant and apologetic chap arranged another date for XPD to come. Again, so far so good, sort of. But again, for the second time and without explanation, XPD did not show up to collect. I rang Aldi yet again and they wanted to arrange a third day for collection, possibly with a different courier company, Yodel.

Aldi is not disputing the poor quality and damaged state of the items, nor that I should be refunded the purchase price and heavy item postage fee, but they are still insisting they are returned first. I have had 2 full wasted days, plus a total of about 3 hours on the phone mainly on hold, provided storage and they have had my money now for almost 3 weeks. It will probably take another 2 to receive a refund when or if it is finally processed. At less than £100 it is not a huge amount but it is certainly not a small amount either. I need it to buy something similar elsewhere as soon as possible. I just want my money back and to dispose of the items, which are only fit for the rubbish bin, not for resale. Aldi can even see from reviews of the items on their website, unfortunately posted after I ordered mine, that the items are faulty.

Because of the current coronavirus pandemic, I am shielding a severely disabled child. It has been a long, difficult and worrying 3 months so far, and it is far from over yet. The items were meant to be something pleasant we could do together and so this has also been a disappointment. I provide round the clock sole care, with full waking nights mostly. It is difficult to keep an ear out for the door at all times and often very difficult to get to the door, never mind being kept on hold repeatedly and talking on the phone. I have gone without any sleep twice now to make sure I did not miss the courier. I know this is not Aldi's problem or responsibility, but I did make them aware in the hope that they would show some compassion and flexibility in the circumstances. When I said that I did not think I should be expected to do this a third time, and still with no guarantee a courier would turn up, the latest customer services person became unsympathetic, saying it was their policy and the only option if I wanted my money back, accused me of 'looking for problems', speaking loudly over me, refusing to transfer me to allow me to discuss it with a manager who might be able to review the situation, and even putting the phone down on me suddenly and without any resolution. At no time did I raise my voice at him, swear or name call - that is not my style. I have a pile of heavy, bulky rubbish taking up much-needed space, am significantly out of pocket, and feel frustrated and - I have to admit - upset at being treated that way on the phone. I am also very tired. I don't know where I go from here. I feel Aldi are holding me to ransom, and getting the item back to return to the manufacturer is more important to them than repeatedly inconveniencing a customer, even one in my situation.

Is it reasonable of Aldi to demand that I give up a third day, and with no guarantees, and to keep hold of my money in the meantime, in the circumstances?

Apologies, it is XDP - I have got the letters the wrong way round! I have just seen that 45% of reviews for them on Trustpilot are Bad or Poor.

I'm waiting for something via XDP that's been sat in their collection depot since last Friday without moving ... Why do Aldi use them???

LivingTheCliffEdge · 18/06/2020 18:49

I really don't know, Eggys - I hope you get your item!

The latest Aldi man tried to blame XDP and seemed to suggest I should take it up with them, but I am Aldi's customer, Aldi supplied the shoddy goods, Aldi have my money and Aldi have employed XDP, I had no say in the matter. I suggested an alternative courier after they didn't turn up the first time - even Yodel - but Aldi refused to budge. I did try ringing XDP but - another horror - found their number is premium rate! Even then they won't help you - they insist you speak to the retailer ie back to being on hold with Aldi. I was on hold for a total of 80 minutes with Aldi - twice they just cut the call off without speaking after 20 minutes on hold - it's infuriating, frustrating, and I haven't got the time and energy for it. I sent XDP 2 emails too, but they were ignored. So here we are.

I was also made to feel unreasonable by the latest Aldi man for 'not taking up their offer to take the items back to an Aldi shop'. We live in a rural area, so the nearest shop is not exactly a few streets away. Also, these are 3 heavy, large items which I had to pay a premium charge to have delivered and yet I am meant to just pop them back to the shop for a refund because they haven't got their act together to pick them up, twice? I couldn't even fit them with the DCs in the car if I wanted to. Perhaps I should leave the DCs home alone for the benefit of Aldi? The main point though, was that it was suggested I could to go to the shop when I am shielding a severely disabled child, haven't been in a shop for 3 months, and am having to rely on others for shopping? They knew all this and although he wouldn't transfer me to a manager he did say he'd had advice whilst being on the phone to me. Somehow, Aldi's need for these shabby items back before I get a refund trumps 3 months of being careful and justifies putting a vulnerable child's health at risk? I really don't think Aldi get our situation or care.

Could you do a chargeback on your card?

LivingTheCliffEdge · 18/06/2020 20:17

Thanks Carol - I was just wondering that too, but have never attempted it before. It was a debit rather than credit card.

I wish I had looked at Trustpilot reviews too about Aldi before ordering, especially large items - 2 stars, 64% rate them Bad or Poor.

We have had some groceries from them and a couple of special buys, all courtesy of a friend, plus some wine, books and toys etc online via Hermes. They were all pretty good, which gave me the confidence to order these large items. The result with the poor quality and damage, and how it is being dealt with, or not dealt with, and how I was treated, has come as a bit of a shock. I have been lucky with customer service with other companies in the past, obviously!

I did say it had put me off shopping with Aldi in the future - he said it wasn't his job to try to persuade me otherwise - didn't seem bothered at all.

LivingTheCliffEdge · 20/06/2020 18:39

The items are still here, and no contact at all from Aldi to resolve matters.

No refund either.

OP posts:
LivingTheCliffEdge · 26/06/2020 19:44

Update - an email from the courier this week to say, for the third time, that they were coming to collect. And guess what? Yes, that's right - they didn't turn up again.

LivingTheCliffEdge · 26/06/2020 19:51

I rang my bank to discuss a Charge Back to my card, as suggested by @CarolVordermansArse . They were pretty horrified by Aldi's stance and suggested I start the process asap, with a very good chance of success. It might take a little time to conclude because they are dealing with a higher than usual number of applications. I will do it, but I could do without the nuisance factor and Aldi clinging on to my money in the meantime.

OP posts:
LivingTheCliffEdge · 26/06/2020 19:59

In a last ditch attempt to resolve matters, I rang Aldi after the third failed collection. This time a nice and apologetic - about the poor treatment from the last man as much as the third failed collection - woman spoke to a manager. My hopes lifted a little that a resolution and refund were imminent, but no. Would you believe that they want to arrange a fourth date for collection?! When I explained why I thought my giving up a fourth day wasn't acceptable, especially in our circumstances, I was offered a call back from a manager. I am not holding my breath for some common sense, compassion and an immediate refund, although it would be nice.

Did you get your Aldi item in the end, @EggysMom ?

I emailed xdp customer services direct, but they didn't reply.

OP posts:
LivingTheCliffEdge · 26/06/2020 20:14

I asked Aldi for a copy of their complaints procedure, as suggested by @PaolaNeri but I was told that is just to email Customer Services? I will do that though and follow up with Retail ADR as suggested, thanks. It is indeed frustrating and time consuming - nearly another hour wasted on the phone to Aldi.

Did you get your Park Dean refund yet, @OneForMeToo ?! I think you might be right, the way things are going...

OP posts:
LivingTheCliffEdge · 26/06/2020 20:21

Or your gazebo collected, @porridgeface ?!

I'm beginning to think they do this to make you give up and not pursue the refund. I'm tempted, because I really don't want or need this hassle, but it's the principle and unfairness of a multi-million pound company wrongly keeping my money.

OP posts:
LivingTheCliffEdge · 26/06/2020 20:25

Even as a bloody goodwill gesture

Sadly goodwill seems to be lacking with Aldi, @One

OP posts:
LivingTheCliffEdge · 26/06/2020 20:29

It's four days now apparently, they expect from me, @SarahTancredi .

They think I have nothing better to do, obviously.

OneForMeToo · 26/06/2020 20:29

No park dean refund however I ordered an item that arrived 14th May and I’ve been trying to return ever since. Hermes keep not coming finally today I got an email off the company to say they will credit me back and to not worry about returning the item.

PumpkinP · 26/06/2020 20:32

Had a similar thing from Argos when they first started their same day delivery service. I ordered an item that was absolutely smashed to pieces, when I called Argos to get it returned they just kept making dates and not showing up, at one point they told me to just dispose of the items and they will just refund me. Obviously they didn’t! But cheek of them to tell me that, luckily I wasn’t stupid enough to do that. I would get onto your bank.

LivingTheCliffEdge · 26/06/2020 20:33

I haven't managed to face up to joining Twitter, sorry, @SimonJT , @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz and @OneForMeToo - I know, I'm not brave enough - probably a good suggestion though.

Sorry about all the short posts instead of one - my laptop keeps turning off in the heat. Just like me.

OP posts:
EggysMom · 26/06/2020 20:36

We did get our ladder set from Aldi, it turned up unexpectedly yesterday. The courier tracking reckons that it's still sat at their collection depot Grin

LivingTheCliffEdge · 26/06/2020 20:42

Ah, good news, @Eggys - no excuse to avoid those jobs now, except 'it's too hot' of course!

OP posts:
LivingTheCliffEdge · 26/06/2020 20:46

How did you get your refund in the end, @PumpkinP - was it your bank?

I would hold on to the item until you get your refund, @One, given Pumpkin's experience.

Does anyone know how many opportunities I am meant to give Aldi for collection? I might ask in Legal if not. I think I have kept my side of the contract to give 3 opportunities, but they have not kept their side of the contract by failing to collect 3 times, not forgetting by supplying faulty, damaged goods not fit for purpose in the first place.

OP posts:
porridgeface · 26/06/2020 23:52

@LivingTheCliffEdge hi OP, no joy yet. XDP were scheduled to collect today, sent me a reminder yesterday telling me they would give me a 3 hour time slot this morning. Not had any emails today, no-one turned up and when their portal is still telling me it's scheduled for today! Terrible service all round.
