TMI - re bowel movements - don't open if squeamish

GimmeAy · 18/06/2020 13:14

Today I've had stomach cramps and some solid movements and some more diarrhoea. Last movement produced a small amount of an almost yellowish/clear slime/mucous instersped with bright red blood.

Google of course suggests all sorts of potentials from minor to severe.
Should I wait for a GP appointment tomorrow (if it continues) or would you call 111? I'm not feeling the best either - a little nauseous.
Amount of bloody slime was only about a teaspoon amount.

Apologies for the gory detail.

I think that if you consult the NHS website it is a 111 matter. My DW had similar issues hence a bit of knowledge. Good luck

I had that before it was just piles. Personally I would wait for the GP.

Murinae · 18/06/2020 13:36

Bright red blood is usually piles.

Twigletfairy · 18/06/2020 13:38

As it was bright red blood and a small quantity, I would wait for GP appointment tomorrow.

Hope you feel better soon!

AntiSocialDistancer · 18/06/2020 13:39

I would also wait for GP but phone your surgery today, they might be able to get you a call back today

GimmeAy · 18/06/2020 13:44

Filled out 111 online and it said Go to an emergency treatment centre urgently
You should go within the next 1 hour.
So I rang 111, so they said to ring GP, but you can only get a GP call if you ring at 8am, otherwise all the appointments are gone. So 111 have arranged for a GP to phone me at approx. 3.30pm.

I don't think it's piles as the blood is within the slime if that makes sense. Gross I know.

GinDrinker00 · 18/06/2020 13:47

Sounds like piles. I had the exact same issue.

GimmeAy · 18/06/2020 13:48

Well that's better if it's piles. Were you feeling a little weak and nauseous too?

OP posts:
LesleysChestnutBob · 18/06/2020 13:51

I often felt a bit nauseated all the time so it was hard to tell! If you're having diarrhoea though it could be that leaving you feeling a bit wrung out?

GimmeAy · 18/06/2020 13:52

Well only one loose bowel movement.

I'll update with whatever the doctor suggests.

Definitely speak to someone, GP or 111.

It does sound as though you’re constipated (produces more mucus as your bowel tries to shift it and more likely to aggravate internal piles = bleeding. Diarrhoea is also common with constipation - look up overflow).

Constipation is one of the more likely causes but speak to your GP. They may want you to be assessed properly or they may want to keep an eye on you (is this a one off episode?). You certainly describe a couple of red flag symptoms but depending on context it might not be as alarming as you initially think.

I know my local hospitals gastro services are still very restricted so I don’t know if rocking up to A&E is the best idea without uncontrollable pain or bleeding. Your GP is probably best placed to know how to direct you locally.

GimmeAy · 18/06/2020 13:55

@Iamawareofthat What did it turn out to be with your dw?

GimmeAy · 18/06/2020 13:57

Cornettoninja I was referred a few months ago (apparently) to a bowel specialist, though haven't received an appointment letter. Will follow up with GP tomorrow, to ensure that that referral has in fact been sent.

For months of cramps and diarrhoea - but that has stopped in the past couple of weeks or so. Now this.

Cornettoninja · 18/06/2020 14:22

Ah, that’s good. Do you know where the bowel specialist was based? You wouldn’t be unusual in contacting them directly to check if they’ve received your referral and if they have asking for a review sooner rather than later.

It might be a nightmare getting through but it’s worth a punt. Google the department for a direct telephone number and don’t be put off by getting a voicemail. Leave a message and you’ll get called back.

frumpety · 18/06/2020 14:24

This is a useful little tool for describing your poo. Was the mucus flecked with blood or more blood than mucus ?

TMI - re bowel movements - don't open if squeamish
GimmeAy · 18/06/2020 15:40

frumpety - the first poops were 5, then there was a 6 and the last one, the mucous one, was like none of those in the pic. It was more the texture of phlegm you might cough up, with blood running through it. Like jelly really.

So doc phoned - she wasn't very nice but that's beside the point. She wanted to go to her surgery somewhere in London, but I really don't feel well enough today to collect something to take a stool sample, and then wait 5 days for results and refer me to a specialist. So I asked if I could get them from my GP surgery tomorrow instead, as that's not too far from me.

Re where I was referred to - I would presume local hospital. Don't even know what dept. I would have been referred to.

So, I'll ring GP at 8am in morning and check out whatever this woman has requested and take it from there. She said if I develop a fever, if the bleeding or pain gets pretty bad or if I generally start feeling really unwell to go to A&E. So I guess that's what I'll do.
