To ask cleaner to wear a mask while cleaning

Avocado1234 · 18/06/2020 11:35

Thinking about having our cleaner back. She said that she's not wearing a face mask in other families houses at the moment as it gets hot.

AIBU to ask her to have a face mask on while she cleans our house? (We will be out while she is here) If it's too much of an ask I might just postpone having her back until I'm more comfortable...

Absolutely unnecessary and unreasonable

FiveShelties · 18/06/2020 12:08

I suppose if you are not bothered about losing her as a cleaner then go ahead. It seems unnecessary to me.

I am vulnerable and asked my cleaner to wear a mask which she also wants to do as she has a young child.
We both view this as safer for both of us.
I am in the house but keep a 2 metre distance and have windows open.
I would not be happy to let someone in without a mask because the science says that the Covid does live in the air for some amount of time.

Why not be careful? Maybe if you are out of the house for some hours it is safer?

ittakes2 · 18/06/2020 12:12

My cleaner wears a mask. I bought her several and she wears the one she feels most comfortable with. The virus is spread by droplets - both in the air or those that fall onto surfaces. To me it makes sense for her to wear a mask. We also open all the windows and try and be on a different floor to where she is working. If I have to be on the same floor as her out of courtesy to her I also wear a mask. She washes her hands while cleaning so I don’t see the point in getting her to wear gloves.

vanillandhoney · 18/06/2020 12:16

I feel really bad for her that she's going to lose her job over this. At the moment there isn't anything that says people have to wear masks if they're going to work in other people's homes - only if social distancing will be impossible.

If you're not going to be in the room, why does she need to have a mask on? Who exactly is she going to be infecting?

@ittakes2 @goldfinchfan

Exactly my thoughts.. glad to know I'm not the only one...

But you aren't there OP? Why does she need a mask on? And why are you ignoring us?( sorry, most of us)

Yabu

Lynda07 · 18/06/2020 12:31

She doesn't need a mask if she is not getting up close and personal with anyone. Honestly!

Your house, your rules! YANBU.

Maria1921 · 18/06/2020 12:37

Unless she is going to sit opposite you, within a metre and talk at your face for at least 15 mins then you are being a complete knob about this. Sorry to be so blunt but to threaten a poor woman's income if she does not comply with something so utterly ludicrous is cruel.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 18/06/2020 12:38

there is no social distancing going on op.
if you think she has the virus that is one thing, but just to ask her to wear a mask for no proper reason is OTT.
i get you are worried of course.
it is a shame that she will lose her job when there is no reason for her to wear a mask yet you want her to.

Flittingabout · 18/06/2020 12:39

My cleaning company sent the cleaner with gloves, a face mask and apron and said that they are aware cleaners could get the virus from going in and out of people's homes so are making it compulsory to protect their staff and clients as much as possible. They also said we have to be in a separate room (if not going out) and they will not clean that room.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 18/06/2020 12:40

Just hold off from bringing her back op, but continue to pay her ,
life is tough.

It's up to her if she doesnt want to wear a mask. Can't you just go out or sit in another room.

Oh for heavens sake you're not even there get a grip. Sick of this hysteria
vanillandhoney · 18/06/2020 13:00

I really wouldn't want to clean in a mask in this weather - it is so, so humid it's uncomfortable.

I dog walk and did a meet and greet with a new client this morning - we social distanced but I didn't wear a mask as I don't feel they're a good idea around dogs. Dogs need to be able to see your facial expressions (and hear you when you recall them!). Luckily she agreed with me.

Masks should only be worn in enclosed spaces where social distancing is impossible. Given you're going to be out while your cleaner is around, why the need to ask?

holidaydisaster2020 · 18/06/2020 13:01

Oh wow ok, so you seem pretty set on this. What I would say is that cleaners are going to be in high demand just at the moment. Able, I imagine, to pick and choose their jobs. If you insist on sacking your cleaner over this you could well find yourself without one, or with a cleaner who's not that good, or with a cleaner who tells you they're wearing a mask and doesn't.
Is that a risk you're prepared to take?

Happymum12345 · 18/06/2020 13:07

Perhaps if you’re worried about the virus coming into your home from your cleaner, clean your own home?

EnlightenedOwl · 18/06/2020 14:59

Facebook friend told me yesterday she wipes down every individual item of shopping on her online order. So every tin every packet...HmmConfused god knows what she does with the veg.

rosie1959 · 18/06/2020 15:02

If nobody is in the house why on earth would a cleaner wear a mask
