To not buy any clothes until I reach my goal size?

I’m currently losing weight at a steady pace - was a large 14, am now a medium 12. If I wear my old clothes I’m not sure if you can tell the difference tbh. I wear a lot of dresses, nothing very tight or revealing.

I’m aiming for a size 10, can’t decide whether to buy clothes now in my current size (money could stretch to a few things) or wait until I’m there? Will likely not be until the autumn so a different season. Also concerned about consumerism, sustainability etc... Wondering what others have done in this situation?

It's smart. Once you're at you're goal size you'll be able to see how different cuts sit on you.

If you can afford a few summer things in size 12, buy them. Getting this far is a success that you should celebrate!

Batqueen · 17/06/2020 10:21

How about getting a couple Second hand things from Depop or charity shops? That way you can enjoy seeing your weight loss in new clothes whilst Not worrying about sustainability aspect or spending much?

DahlingBebe · 17/06/2020 10:32

I gained weight in lockdown so im a size up. I bought 2 outfits and 3 basics so i am comfortable and can go out looking half decent as my clothes were too tight.

Incidentally, i had oversized 3 months ago in a coat and now thats my size. I think buying bigger looser clothes made me not realise how much bigger i was getting.

I would not buy any clothes more than absolutely budget and need requires think of them as your clothes for 6 to 8 weeks what do you reaaallllyyy need and dont mind spending?

I would instead shop for shoes, make up, skin or hair stuff, bags, furniture..whatever that will still be good when you lose weight.
Treat myself with house plants, healthy food, healthy apps..

And i would not buy outfits in your future size unless its an item you absolutely love but i just wouldnt get more than one. I would hang it where i see it when i wake up and before i sleep.

Can you look at eBay? Some of the second hand shops are starting to reopen in the next couple of weeks too. That could scratch the itch of buying something new, but keeping it sustainable whilst you get to a size 10.

When I lost weight I found no one noticed until I started to wear clothes that fit me. I stayed in my bigger clothes until I got to a size 10, all of a sudden, after a shopping spree people noticed

I like that idea @DahlingBebe - I’m wary of buying stuff in a size 10 but one nice thing could be ‘motivational’... Smile

@BurtsBeesKnees - it’s strange isn’t it, when I wear 12 clothes (a couple of very old bits I still have from when slimmer) people notice, but if I put back on the same old size 14/16 stuff (quite sack-like admittedly Blush) it’s like nothings happened...

I’m doing this for health/fitness and well-being rather than appearance primarily but it’s nice to see the results too...

Like the idea of eBay/ too (never been on the latter), as not really going to shops at the moment...

Sorry i realise i jave rambled and not actually answered what you asked

Simce you lost weight i agree with pp to celebrate it by buying second hand or etgical brands that hold their value if you resell on ebay like nomads, seasalt, bodemm, people tree but only a few dresses.not a full wardrobe.

userabcname · 17/06/2020 11:41

I'd try to hold off as long as you have clothes that fit. I am also losing but have actually caved and purchased some clothes this week in my "interim" size because I can't yet fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes and my maternity trousers fall down as soon as I pull them up! I am definitely going to buy some nicer bits when I'm at my goal weight (stone and a half to go!). Congrats on your weight loss!

Florenceandthesnail · 17/06/2020 14:10

Thanks both! :)

I'd wait. And in fact I'm doing that myself. I've lost nearly a stone, but have much more to lose. I might buy a couple of things for work at a halfway point, so I stay looking neat and tidy, but overall I'm only buying stuff like bras and underwear as and when I really need to. I've already thrown some knickers out as they're now too big and at risk of falling down under a skirt.

And as I'm losing weight, I'll buy from charity shops until I reach my ultimate goal, no point wasting a lot of money on new stuff that will get sent to a charity shop in turn when I reach my goal weight.

Maybe have fun with that. Keep wearing the old stuff until you reach your goal, then buy the new stuff and Ta Dah! Hit them with the new you.

LouiseTrees · 17/06/2020 14:39

Could you belt your dresses to make them fit you better at the moment?

Boulshired · 17/06/2020 14:59

I find that the people I know who have the goal weight/size tend to put the weight back on. Especially if the goal size is at the lowest end as that can be the hardest time when you are at a plateau. Instead of celebrating how far they have come they feel a failure for not reaching a goal. Look at second hand, sales if you can as the better you feel about yourself the easier it will be.

It's easy to put the weight back on, I agree. So I'm concentrating on healthy eating to form new habits to reduce the chance of weight gain.
Florenceandthesnail · 17/06/2020 18:12

Thanks interesting @Boulshired - do you think it’s better not to have a goal size/weight then?

I’ve been a 12 for most of my adult life tbh, only became a 14/16more recently, after a stressful time.

Maybe aiming for a size 10 is too ambitious, it’s just going so well (am cutting portions and exercising) that I thought I may as well carry on....

For me it depends on what not getting to a size 10 means to the person. What is more important and what will not achieving it mean to you? Will you more likely get to a 10 if you are feeling good at a 12.
