To think it's not normal to go 2 weeks without speaking to your DP?

I'm sure I'll get told to mind my own business here. I'm just idly thinking about this whilst bored in lockdown.

I was speaking to a friend last night who does not live with her DP so they have spent quarantine living separately. I asked her how her DP was getting on and she told me that she doesn't know because they haven't spoken for a couple of weeks. I asked if everything was ok with them and she insisted that it was normal for couples to sometimes go this long without speaking to each other and that it's no indication that there's anything wrong with the relationship. Previously they used to see each other every weekend.

I'm wondering if my perception that you should be speaking to your DP regularly is wrong. Is it normal for many people to go this long without communicating?

I would think it’s unusual, but who’s to say what works for them.

vanillandhoney · 17/06/2020 07:26

For me, no, it's not normal at all - unless one party is in the armed forces or something and physically has no way of contacting you.

Each to their own though!

BluntAndToThePoint80 · 17/06/2020 07:35

Is he a boyfriend though rather than a DP ?

Either way it’s a bit odd in this day and age with mobile tech etc but if it works for them...

macaronilemonpony · 17/06/2020 07:37

Seems long to me

DisplayPurposesOnly · 17/06/2020 07:38

It's not a case of should. It's odd that neither of them (apparently) want to. But if they're both happy with that...

Rosebel · 17/06/2020 07:39

Seems strange to me. We've only been apart 4 days but speak and text every day. Still it obviously works for them.

Lictoc · 17/06/2020 07:51

She refers to his as her partner rather her boyfriend.

Do they live together?

Did you read the OP? Confused

I thought this said GP at first and was like dear lord! But no it’s not - I have had this and been fobbed off with “I’m busy” - just not much contact in fact rather than none. My sister pointed out it wasn’t normal and it transpired he just wasn’t interested.

Lictoc · 17/06/2020 08:27

Lol definitely not GP! 😂

Is he in the military or anything like that?

Lictoc · 17/06/2020 08:43

No, not in the military, he has a normal office job

Especially in quarantine I would have thought they’d want to chat. Maybe one of them hates using the phone. But then you’d text etc.
I think it’s really unusual, and a bit sad. Suggested they aren’t really ‘there’ for each other.

If I was away for work I would easily go a week without speaking to my DP. We’ve now been together 14 years so hasn’t affected our relationship - we were both just busy with work and it meant we had more to talk about when we did see eachother.

AudHvamm · 17/06/2020 08:56

My partner used to travel (10 days-3 weeks) for work and took a few longer holidays (2weeks) with friends/his brother. We didn’t feel the need to be in much contact. A few check-in messages/Skype calls. We’ve lived together most of our 11 years though and we’re both quite independent/like our alone time. Happily married these days and managing fine during lockdown (though we make opportunities for alone time) and didn’t do any harm.

If both of them are happy with it I wouldn’t see this as a problem. If they had different needs for frequency of contact and weren’t able to compromise then it might be.

@rottiemum88 apparently not Blush

passthemustard · 17/06/2020 09:42

I live with my DP and he calls me from work everyday and texts almost constantly. I can't see how a committed relationship would work with no contact. IMO it's very strange and suggests a problem.

notheragain4 · 17/06/2020 10:17

Yeah no I've got nothing then, I think that's weird! I talk to people I don't even like more often than that!
