Marcus Rashford - media coverage of support for school meal vouchers

Is it me or do I detect an underlying whiff of racism, dressed up as support for someone from the black community, regarding the media reporting of Marcus Rashford's call for the continuation of the school meal voucher scheme?

There seem to be an underlying air of surprise that he could be so articulate or impassioned about the issue.

He is a young, black footballer. Which one of those descriptions could they be so surprised/impressed by?

If he was going and white, rich and a footballer I think it would likely be the same. Footballers aren’t famed for their social conscious, being articulate, brains generally speaking.

I think he is a brilliant role model for youngsters, I know my football mad DS has a lot of respect for him. I agree with PP’s who say it’s great he hasn’t forgotten how tough life was for his family growing up he clearly wants to help & make a difference. His mum must be really proud of her son. We hope he gets Sports Personality of the Year.

sashagabadon · 17/06/2020 07:46

he's seems like a really nice thoughtful young man. I would be very proud of him if he was my son.

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/06/2020 08:02

I think it’s brilliant. In one fell swoop he’s helping to destygmatize fsm / the bias against pupil premium children and getting the much needed help for children in the poorest families.

Mumratheevergiving · 17/06/2020 08:32

For anyone doubting his integrity over this & seeing it as a media ploy do you follow football at all? Rival fans are likely to rip the piss out of him for growing up poor.. it was not self-interest that made him speak out!

@Mumratheevergiving

sst1234Celebs are well advised by their handlers to back causes which will get them the most Wake up people, stop being taken in by the mafia. They are doing it for themselves an no one else.

Or perhaps Rashford remembers well what it feels like to grow up in poverty and need? Perhaps he has an iota of compassion to people in circumstances similar to those his family and friends were in? Perhaps he's not as cynical as you come across?

Or as gullible as some on here
CelestialSpanking · 17/06/2020 11:22

I honestly think it has less to do with his race and more to do with the fact a 22 year old man who gets paid a load of money to play footie for a living has spoken out about this issue. Fair play to him. In fact, well done him. It’s got people talking, he articulated his point well and he understands the importance of FSM- he’s not forgotten. His mother must be immensely proud of him. I would be if he was my son.

derxa · 17/06/2020 11:32

MN is very snooty about football. Well done Marcus

Well I'd rather be 'gullible' and believe that Rashford acted out of compassion because he's a decent human being. I would say that's the consensus opinion here.

SST1234 Do you really think he did this as a long-term strategic move when he's in an incredibly lucrative successful career? He will also face flak for it on and off the pitch.

I'm sure he would much rather he didn't have to speak out to remind the Government of their responsibility to help people experiencing severe hardship. It would be far preferable if they remembered that themselves.

Bloody hell I’m proud of Marcus and I’ve never even met him, his mum must be bursting. Agree it’s not a race thing but class; combined with age and football - all thanks to our trash media’s portrayal of things they want to fit their agenda.

I don’t need vouchers for my kids during the summer, my kids haven’t been disadvantaged by lockdown as a result of not having access to internet or a computer. They also have me and their dad both able to help with school work, reassure them that things will be ok and generally be there for them. Hundreds of thousands of kids are missing some or all of those things and I’m hugely grateful to Marcus for making a stand to at least see they aren’t disadvantaged yet further by not having enough to eat. Fantastic young man.

Sports Personality of the Year
Definitely. If he keeps this up he should get a knighthood.
