To wonder how many people would give up work if they had the choice?

I would. I do enjoy being kept occupied...for example i love study and crafts but i find workplace politics make me very anxious and depressed...i just can't handle them.
My ideal "job" would be an artist but i need to pay bills.
Jobs don't make me happy but i would be less happy if hungry and% or homeless.
If i won the lottery i would start a busoness so i would still want an occupation but one that wasn't in a position where I dont have to deal with too much politics( pipe dream i know.)

I wouldn’t work if I won the lottery. Lot of people say they’d be bored without the routine of work but I’d love it. Grin

ButterMeCrumpets · 16/06/2020 16:48

If I won enough to stop working I would. I continue working now only to fund my older years.

greythrow · 16/06/2020 16:48

I would still work. I worked really hard to be able to do my job (vocational) and I love it. I might reduce my hours slightly. But my husband would almost certainly give up work if we won the lottery and that would make our lives easier in a lot of ways.

Angelonia · 16/06/2020 16:50

I think I'd still work even if I won the lottery. I love my job and my colleagues are really nice.

isabellerossignol · 16/06/2020 16:51

I like the routine of working and like the relationships with colleagues. But if I didn't need money then I could just work doing whatever I fancied, it wouldn't matter if the pay was crap.

Ghostlyglow · 16/06/2020 16:51

I have been planning to give up this year, when I get to 55. This year's events might delay it though, but no further than next year. I hate working. Smile

Summerfortheages · 16/06/2020 16:53

I would give up work and open a small business or do voluntary work a couple of days a week just to have something to do. I don’t do well without a routine.

Lottapianos · 16/06/2020 16:56

I enjoy my job but I would ditch work in a heartbeat if I could! I would spend my time volunteering, doing courses, exercising, cooking and generally pleasing myself

pinkazing · 16/06/2020 17:00

I would have given up work in a heartbeat but this period of furlough has proved to me I would hate it. I’m done now I want to go back.

Paranoidmarvin · 16/06/2020 17:03

Yes yes yes. I have like a million medical problems and spend most of my day in pain from working.

I could stop. Go swimming every morning and move around slower I would be better. But then I would have to never eat. So ......

CHIRIBAYA · 16/06/2020 17:03

I couldn't imagine not working and have worked since I was legally old enough too, from Saturday and evening jobs through education into full time then part-time when children came along. Work gives me a sense of purpose and self-worth. I agree though that workplace politics are difficult and I don't do well being told what to do hence I run three of my own businesses and get to choose who I work with. It is hard work though and lots of responsibility but I would rather that than take instruction from an idiot or conform to all the corporate crap, like team building exercises and box ticking performance reviews.

CountFosco · 16/06/2020 17:04

I think many people have boring jobs that are not rewarding, obviously they wouldn't work if they didn't have to. Some could find lots of other worthwhile things to fill their day when they stop working (e.g. I know a SAHP who is a local councillor, has an allotment, and does lots of volunteering), some will not.

Some of us are lucky enough to have interesting and challenging jobs that are rewarding, I can't imagine ever having enough money to stop working but I'm a scientist which is a pretty cool job.

gwenneh · 16/06/2020 17:05

In a bloody heartbeat. I love my job, but I have other passions I'd rather fill my time with on the day-to-day.

thepeopleversuswork · 16/06/2020 17:08

I can’t think of anything worse than not working tbh. I would go round the bend with boredom. Also would be terrified of relying on anyone for money.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/06/2020 17:09

I would give up work if I won enough money to. I wouldn't ever give up work if it meant relying on someone else financially.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 16/06/2020 17:28

I love my job. If we won millions I think both my husband and I would probably still do our jobs but on less hours and perhaps do more additional training of interest etc

RedPanda2 · 16/06/2020 17:32

I'd reduce my hours and my partner's too, but I love my job and would really miss my colleagues. Would love my partner to be able to spend more time on his hobbies.

whatthehay · 16/06/2020 17:58

Ok so I don't work. I haven't worked in 2 years. It's bloody boring. I struggle to keep a routine especially with lockdown now. And I end up with no motivation to do anything.

I might just be down because of lockdown and the endless boredom but I know I struggled before hand too. I just end up scrolling MN and FB endlessly and not doing laundry and housework or anything more exciting.

I'd love a job but the kids don't want to go to after school clubs/want me here when they get home. And my partners not keen either.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 16/06/2020 18:00

Me! I have been furloughed and have loved not working, it's fantastic. I can do whatever I want - go running, watch tv, read etc. I never feel bored or lonely. However sadly finances will not permit me to do it forever.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/06/2020 18:05

@whatthehay it's not up to your partner and kids. If you want a job then you have every right to get one. My DS goes to breakfast club when I go to work, I don't give him the choice.

Goosefoot · 16/06/2020 18:07

In a way I did. We decided when we had kids that we needed at least one person who was mostly focused on keeping things running at home, including childcare. I've often had some sort of pt work, from being a reservist to in-home childcare, and now I am tutoring at a school.

Some of those jobs I'd have given up, I quite like the tutoring though and it's a few hours a day which is great. But I've never felt like I couldn't fill my days without paid employment, quite the opposite paid employment has often prevented me doing what I think is more valuble.

ClaraEccles · 16/06/2020 18:08

If I won the lottery (good amount) I’d quit tomorrow and never look back.

I’d look to get involved in volunteering for a good cause or similar.

I CANNOT for the life of me understand big lottery winners who say ‘it won’t change my life at all’. Give it to someone whose life it will change then!!

BrieAndChilli · 16/06/2020 18:11

If I won enough money to buy a house with a spare bedroom after my kids had a room each I would give up work and Foster.

Tlollj · 16/06/2020 18:12

I would quit in a heart beat.
Just walk away delete all my colleagues numbers never see them again. Bliss

Oblomov20 · 16/06/2020 18:13

No. I'd buy 2 or 3 business and just do the accounts occasionally.
