To think this can't be a virus

Not covid!
DD 6 months has a rash all over. She is fine (teething etc) other than rash. Rang GP with photo who said it's a rash from a virus. Which would be fine but where the hell has she caught a virus from? The whole family has been strict in following covid rules and she hasn't been anywhere but for a walk in the countryside. So surely she can't have caught anything?!

Teething can cause rashes. Maybe have a look online at types of rashes in children, click images and see if it looks similar to anything.

Of course she could. Some viruses are airborne and besides, you have post coming through the door, you probably wear shoes into the hallways at least, you have shopping in the house that other people have touched etc. Viruses are hardy and survive on most surfaces for some time.

Howdidido · 16/06/2020 14:53

Definitely not teething rash.its all over her.
But she has literally not been within 10m of anyone. Or touched anything coming from outside. All post is left for 2 days and then wash hands after opening. Shoes left in hallway etc

Our DD same age was in a and e two days ago with a rash and vomiting and wheezing. They reckon it was a mild allergic reaction. Does she normally get eczema? Are you weaning her and she's had something new?

Howdidido · 16/06/2020 16:48

Allergy. Good idea. Will look back over what shes eaten. But it hasnt faded in 2 days

You know there are viruses other than Covid which you can get from animals, plants, water, food, soil, etc?

DontTouchTheMoustache · 16/06/2020 17:27

DS used to get heat rashes all over his body, could it be that?

SideEyeing · 16/06/2020 18:49

Could it be your washing powder? DD suddenly started reacting to fabric conditioner at about 5 months for no apparent reason. Endless bloody guessing game. Using just non bio sensitive then rinsing the load again before drying helped.

Basically it's an endless bloody guessing game!

Seeline · 16/06/2020 18:54

I'd guess an allergy - something she's eaten, washing powder, bathing, shampoo, sun cream etc. You can become allergic to something that you've previously been fine with, and if course there's always the dreaded 'new, improved' version.

DianaT1969 · 16/06/2020 19:00

Could someone else in the home be asymptomatic? It doesn't particularly sound like Covid though. What did the GP say?

DianaT1969 · 16/06/2020 19:00

Sorry, I meant what treatment did the GP suggest?

Howdidido · 16/06/2020 19:56

I'm thinking allergy. I'll look into what shes eaten and test any new things. Lucky I was keeping a food diary!
No new laundry liquid or softener. But about to start a new kind soon so if that's it we will know. No suncream last week or so.

I never thought it was covid! Just that viruses come from other people (generally) and we haven't been near other people...
Dr said "it's a virus rash. Call back if it gets worse but should fade in bect 5-6 days"

Heat rashes generally disappear when you cool down right? It's been nearly 48 hours and 2 baths since it started.

The blotchy rash has sort of joined together

My youngest used to get fevers occasionally with teething. A day or 2 after the fever she often came out in a rash like this

Sillybilly6 · 16/06/2020 20:09

My 2yr old had a rash a few weeks back that started as a few clusters then merged into one giant rash, went to the drs 3 times, was diagnosed with dermatitis and it took 5/6 weeks to clear up, it’s still not totally gone. I’m certain it was a heat rash as got a lot worse in the heat, once I took the plastic mattress cover off it went pretty quickly as he wasn’t sweating on it all night.

Mitzgerald · 16/06/2020 20:12

Heat rash? It can take a few days to go completely. An anti histamine like piriton might help. My daughter is prone to heat rash and it feels really bumpy. Came up all over her body in the recent heat.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 16/06/2020 20:21

Given that she's weaning age, I'd say allergy.

I've got an allergic one myself and the rash was a round a lot in the weaning stage.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 16/06/2020 20:26

It's been nearly 48 hours and 2 baths since it started.

Baths can reeeaallly make them worse.

Can you show a pic of the rash? An allergic rash can be quite distinctive

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 16/06/2020 22:47

I second heat rash but the doctor could well be right. You say you leave shoes in the hall but presumably you or she goes in the hall in socks or slippers at some point? Then it gets trodden into other rooms, she touches the floor/her own feet etc.

You give her a packet of crisps for example. You might have wiped them down but unless you take each individual pack out and clean meticulously with boiling water and bleach you can't remove every possible contaminant. Look at Covid. It can survive on your clothing, hair etc.

Unless you keep her in a sterile bubble, completely isolated, you can't know it isn't viral. It may be a food intolerance or allergy but I wouldn't rule out an ordinary childhood virus. If she's OK in herself just keep an eye and see how she goes, take note of any common factors day to day.
