To be irrationally annoyed at the Daily Mail reporting England as the whole of the U.K?

I know I shouldn’t let the DM bother me, but all through this crisis they’ve reported as if we are all living in England. Today’s headline ‘Shops across the U.K. reopen’. No they aren’t. Some shops in ENGLAND are reopening, here in Wales they are still very much closed for the time being.

‘Schools across Britain reopen’ no, they are still closed in Wales and Scotland.

‘Boris says it’s OK to travel long distances’. Not in Wales it’s not, we have to stick to 5 miles.

Seriously it’s like the rest of us don’t exist! Why are we being ignored in the other home nations? Our rule are different.

'It only ceases to be so if you are in Scotland or Wales (Britain, but not England), or Northern Ireland (UK, but not Britain or England). '

What? NI is British, just not part of the Great Britain.

JamieFrasersSassenach · 15/06/2020 11:12

YABU to read the Daily Mail in the first place - whether you are buying a hard copy or clicking on online stuff.
Just imagine - if enough people stopped doing those there would be no Daily Mail - how wonderful would that be?

IVflytrap · 15/06/2020 11:38

YANBU and it's not irrational. I'm English and I hate it.

I wouldn't expect anything better from the Fail, however.

AgeLikeWine · 15/06/2020 11:47

YABU for reading the Fail in the first place. Ignore it. Problem solved.

TheGroak · 15/06/2020 11:49

Stop reading that shit. It’ll rot your brain.

DollyDoneMore · 15/06/2020 11:53

This is the top story on Mail Online right now:

DYING FOR A BARGAIN
Britons desperate to hit the high street for the first time in more than three months formed huge socially distanced queues after dawn today as the majority of England's shops reopen this morning.

JockTamsonsBairns · 15/06/2020 11:54

Can't blame the media for this one, but my DD got some homework last year - find out as much as you can about the Queen of England. I was sorely tempted to get her to write that the only thing she was able to find out was that she didn't exist.

It didn’t say England this morning, it definitely said Britain.

OP posts:
IwishIhadaMargarita · 15/06/2020 13:03

Yes! It even says things like ‘Britons basked in temperatures of 26c’ when up in Scotland we still have our heating on and why spell it ‘Britons’? There are 4 countries please try and realise this as it’s really bloody insulting!

IwishIhadaMargarita · 15/06/2020 13:05

@JockTamsonsBairns I see this a lot by Americans, I saw an article that said Kate was a Princess of England and pointed out in the comments that she was part of the British Royal Family which is not just England. An American told me I was wrong Confused

PuntoEBasta · 15/06/2020 13:13

I’m not generally fond of the Welsh government but I actually think they’ve handled it much better than Westminster. We are behind the England in terms of the Virus spread

I'm guessing you aren't in north Wales. You wouldn't say that if you had had a relative in Wrexham Maelor hospital in March.

Candyflosscookie · 15/06/2020 13:47

There's a classic line about this OP, backed up by many years of observing media slants as a part of my job.

What do you call Andy Murray when he's winning? British
What do you call Andy Murray when he's losing? Scottish

As a Scot, I have had to point out the English/British thing several times to people who either didn't know or just didn't care.

Ignore the DM. They are a pile of shite.

Is that the same Andy Murray who got out of Scotland as soon as he could afford to, married an English woman, moved to the South-East of England and has lived there ever since?
Letshavesometea · 15/06/2020 19:32

That's not really relevant to the point about the media though. Call him British fine, but the point is that he is one thing when he wins and another when he loses.

SamSeabornforPresident · 15/06/2020 20:03

Can't you move elsewhere and remain Scottish? Can't you marry a non-Scot and remain Scottish?

JockTamsonsBairns · 15/06/2020 22:18

I've done exactly as Andy Murray has done, and I'm still very much Scottish Confused

Candyflosscookie · 15/06/2020 23:08

@agelikewine you have completely missed the point of my post - it's what the Media calls him. And when asked he will absolutely and firmly say he is still very much a very proud Scot despite having to move for his training and career - I have met him.

Quackersandcheese3 · 15/06/2020 23:11

It’s just incorrect info as per usual with the daily fail .

GladAllOver · 16/06/2020 10:44

If that's all you can find to criticise the Mail for, you need to reboot your faculties.

mrsBtheparker · 16/06/2020 10:52

I love how on this site thatapparently loathes the DM many posters always seems to know what's in it!!!!!!

MindyStClaire · 16/06/2020 11:33

@DressingGownofDoom

'It only ceases to be so if you are in Scotland or Wales (Britain, but not England), or Northern Ireland (UK, but not Britain or England). '

What? NI is British, just not part of the Great Britain.

The other poster was correct, NI is not Britain or England.

Yes, the correct term for UKish is "British" and so NI is British (with people being able to define themselves as British, Irish or both, etc etc). But it is not Britain.

KingJarvisofPulp · 16/06/2020 11:36

@Shoxfordian

Why are you reading the daily fail?
People can read what they want, not just approved Mumsnet newspapers
Shoxfordian · 16/06/2020 12:24

Of course they can but if you read shit then you should know it's shit
