This is a tad goady maybe, and yes very emotive, i havy skin in this game, relatives and children. I deliberately left this a few days with everything going on, and truly its something that's bothered me for a long time and if anything has been made clear recently its if something is uncomfortable its probably because people need to hear it. Its been well known for a while that in matters concerning detained adults with learning disability its usually radio silence. only usually journalists and people who are usually talking about these issues, usually the parents, talking about this. The report from the Human Rights Centre dropped a few days making it clear adults with asd and learning disabilities locked up in cells in detainment units, their human rights are routinely being abused (no shit), (if you are on twitter users like Bethanysdad, rightfullives and oliverscampaign are very informative regarding this issue.) And a part of me sort of hoped, that someone out side of the usuals with a massive platform will talk about this? draw attention to it?.... nope, even with all the virtue signalling narcissists on twitter not one, absolute tumbleweed, it won't appear on anyones IG story, they wont be any hashtags no outrage inciting social change, i realise im largely shouting into the void here but i am angry, and so despairing now, the message is loud and clear. no one cares.

I don’t know much about these issues but from what I know I agree OP. I think the answer to your question is that it’s because disabled people, and especially disabled children, have no voice (or a very limited voice). It’s difficult for them to advocate for themselves. That means that they’re easy to sideline and ignore - both by politicians and the electorate. And that’s why politicians have limited interest in helping them - it’s not a vote-winning cause.

This story is one of the worst things I have ever read. And I agree with your point about NHS hero worship.

There are children locked up in solitary confinement for 22 hours a day in ‘assessment units’ and their parents cannot get them out. They are put on drug regimes that would make you blanche if they were used on hardened, adult, violent criminals, and some of them have no human contact and their food is pushed through letterbox slots in metal doors. Parental visits - when they happen - have to take place through those slots.

There aren’t enough tears in the world.

And before anyone asks: Yes, it is absolutely happening. Children. Locked up indefinitely with no rights whatsoever. Just because they have a learning disability.

They are supposed to be being released following years of campaigning by dedicated parents against a behemoth of a system that was against them all the way, but COVID put paid to that, along with all parental visits - the institutions implemented blanket bans.

Harriet Harman is trying to raise the profile, but I cannot fathom why there aren’t politicians and high profile human rights activists crawling all over this.

It should be a national scandal.

that story is heartbreaking, yes i totally agree with both of you. all the people on twitter who were complaining about people being silent on BLM acting like they were paragons of virtue in any position to lecture others. Where are they now? the above poster is absolutely bang on, the most vulnerable people in society some mentality children treat with horrific cruelty, their fucking silence is defeaning now Angry not one person (who isnt an MP, Journalist, activist) has said anything AngrySad

I'm just going to give this thread a bump because I cant stop thinking about it.

Also I have a question that's probably offensive. I tried to talk to someone about this issue and she said 'well, why are the parents allowing this to happen?' I said that the parents don't allow it, it just happens. Then she said well I would NEVER let that happen to a child of mine. Do any of you have any tips on how to raise awareness more successfully. If this question is too ignorant or offensive, please ignore it, I'm not trying to upset anyone x

If people are held under the mental health act, the individual that is held really has no rights and the state are the ones responsible for the person detained, so parental rights become null and void effectively for children.
Also these things are often sold has “respite” support on a short term basis. Naturally being away from their families and all familiar support structure increases their anxiety and when they become distressed, they are medicated and deemed a safe guarding issue so can not be released.

Frizzcat thank you for the polite but heartbreaking explanation xxx

I’ve had a very stressful few weeks with my ASD adhd child and been so anxious about his future. He struggles mainly with emotional regulation and a simple misinterpretation of words can send him into a frenzy of kicking, throwing, screaming everything really. I know I shouldn’t worry about things yet to come but I am already very worried about him being a adult male and ending up in a tragic situation 😰

He’s so sweet and loving but so aggressive when something triggers him. I read an attitude the other day about an ASD man in America being held in prison for bumping into another car and then totally panicking. Now I’ve read this 😰😰😰 probably not the best timing 😰

Frizzcat · 17/06/2020 00:04

That is not your story @Justwannabe1 that is that poor mans story.
I’m in much the same boat with my ds and I have those dark periods of despair and worry. Like our children’s distress - not challenging behaviour that implies choice, it is distressed behaviour it will pass and you’ll feel better about things again.

If you haven’t joined Twitter, think about it tryIng it and start following Pete Wharmby, an autistic adult who is just fantastic at explaining the autistic point of view.
Dean Beadle is fantastic too. They have lots of adult neuro diverse people following them and their view point is just great to hear.

Bless you play donut, youre a good soul, if only more people were the same, still radio silence in the 'activist' world outside regular asd activists, it was learning's disability week don't think anyone knew, Yes if you are detained under the mental health act its a massive snowball into having no control, I in my ignorance wondered why parents didn't simply rescue them and take them home.

we live in a society where you are deemed less of a human if you cannot contribute to society and are merely a strain. There have been so many reports/investigations etc over the last years all highlighting this and it only ever gets a head tilt nothing changes.

Thing is, most people don't have family members with intellectual disabilities and/or autism hence the downright cruel policies will never impact them and thus don't care. It is a simple as that .

look e.g. at the uproar if parents because their kids are denied an education for a for months or they cannot access childcare which is impacting their ability to work. None of those ever have two hoots about the huge number of children with SN who cannot or are denied an education and their parents which are forced out of work due to having children at home or not being able to access wrap around and holiday childcare.
