To think my Year 10 is being let down?

My Yr 10 attends a leafy, sought after, Ofsted Outstanding state school. They have made the decision NOT to have any Yr 10s in school this term. My DD is sitting her GCSEs next year and the school apparently can see no benefit of face to face contact of any sort. Remote learning is just as good apparently. How can this be allowed to happen? Other schools locally are managing it but it seems to me that our Head just can't be bothered to make it work. And no-one - the LA, the DFE or Ofsted - have the power to make her. It's a massive school, currently empty bar about 10 keyworker children.

My year 10 will have 7.5 hours max until July 19th. That’s poor. I’m dreading next year with so much to shove in and the stress on them and us.

YANBU. My year 10 dd will be going back this week for half a day a week. It's not enough. They have also told them that they will have to drop one of their options next year so that they can concentrate more on the core subjects.
That's awful! I hadn't even thought about this sort of thing happening. How many GCSEs was she taking?

I actually think that's a good idea.

My friend has a Year 10 and Year 12 who won't be going back to lessons this year and she's unhappy about it.

Pikachubaby · 16/06/2020 12:44

Yes, I have a y10 and y12 too

Also not too happy

I hear Gavin Williamson is in for the chop for his poor handling of education in Corona times!

She really isn't going to be missing much OP. My son's state schools are having the year 10 in for a couple of hours per day but the focus is on pastoral care. They are going to be confined to one classroom and spend those two hours with their form tutor, not subject tutors, doing exactly the same work as those choosing to stay at home are doing.

My daughter's independent school are not opening until at least September.

Comefromaway · 16/06/2020 12:50

Having to drop options really depends on how many options the school was offering in the first place. If a student was doing 10/11 GCSE's then, yes, its a really good idea for them to drop one. If they were only doing 8/9 anyway, not so much.

My son was due to take 8 GCSE's this year and my daughter took 9. 9 is plenty.

Mine is Scottish system, 14 (15 next month) so 4th year exams next year too and they’ve had nothing heard nothing and won’t go back until August will plans for same unknown it’s pitiful he’s depressed, lonely and struggling working alone as he doesn’t understand some of the work and needs it explained but I can’t as I haven’t done those subjects for 20 years but I try and help along with working shifts as a nurse and keeping an eye on his mental health etc
I think 4/5/6 years should have been prioritised for face to face prior to end of term so they can ask questions see friends etc they feel left and forgotten about

LaureBerthaud · 16/06/2020 13:52

it’s pitiful he’s depressed, lonely and struggling

It's disgraceful the way our children have been let down these past few months.
