I can’t believe another shooting, so soon. Will this exculpate the protest even more?

Ah yes, because the other officers would just stand there and let him walk over, remove the officers gun, turn off the safety and start shooting people

Doesn’t matter If a thousand police were were already there. That taser was pointed at him. He is trained - and rightly so to protect his own life. Why should he be tasered when he is just doing the job that protects you me and every one else. Can you imagine if he thought - ‘darn, he’s gonna taser me - I’ll just take it and hope some one else catches him...’

The minute he raised that taser he changed the situation and lost.

By the way taking a safety of a gun takes seconds. What if got the gun and killed both police officers??

The man was running away. He turned round as he was running and aimed as if you shoot whilst running.

There was no chance of deescalating as this guy wasn’t stopping to talk.

People fighting for cases like this minimise real injustices that have been done because most people can see the faults in this one. You shouldn’t lump this man in with the other that police have murdered.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/06/2020 16:12

if they must shoot why could they not shoot to disarm? Why is it shoot to kill?

It's my understanding (via an LAPD detective who's a pal) that unless a marksman's involved they're taught to aim for the largest target, which is of course the torso

Unfortunately with what the torso contains that can often result in death, but it's not the same as that being the actual intent

A taser is considered a non-lethal option by the police, now suddenly it is considered a lethal weapon to justify a killing.

After the killing, the shooting officer's first words were, 'I got him.' Very telling. No trace of 'fearing for his life'.

The mayor has said it was not a justifiable killing. The officer has been fired and will face charges.

And ffs, police often have to chase a fleeing suspect, you don't gun them down because the initial arrest didn't go smoothly and they ran (even with the 'non lethal' taser). If an officer's only method of problem solving is to shoot, then they should not be an officer.

People can twist it how they like to fit their own agenda, it doesn't change the reality.

ChibiTotoro · 15/06/2020 16:24

Bobbie you talk about the importance of de-escalation and yet you yourself are incapable of even trying that over the internet.
I'm done. There's no point trying to converse. It's like trying to speak to a brick wall.
Cue more predictable insults...

He was shot because if the taser had rendered the officer incapacitated the assailant could have come back I and taken his gun. Police officers do get shot by their own gun. Have a quick google there are plenty of cases.

I’d like to put money on it this officer will not serve time and the firing is just PR

Can you clarify what you mean by your comment ‘pinky?’

Another user posted that video yesterday. Maybe there are a few alt-righters on mumsnet.

Thank you for clarifying. No, I’m not the same poster hence my confusion. As for if I’m far right, I am not. It does amuse me that you would presume that though based on one thing.

I live in Atlanta and it isn't being swept under the rug-it'll go to court I'm 100% sure. Atlanta is an incredibly diverse city and the police department reflects it as such. The previous arrests for the city police violence vs two college students involved police officers with black/brown skin. I don't know whether it's training or a police culture or racism or if it's all of the above. I support our Mayor and am so disappointed by these events here.
