To think Edmonton, London, isn't that bad?

I realise its reputation is the pits, but looking round it actually seemed fairly pleasant, and I didn't witness any crime. Admittedly I didn't spend a long time there though. What is it like now? I realise reputations can be based on historical events

My dh is from Edmonton and me just up the road Ponders End. We used to go out to pubs and clubs in Tottenham 30 odd years ago. I remember the Broadwater Farm riots and thought nothing of getting the night bus home from Islington when I started working. I wouldn’t do that now but to be fair we get more risk adverse as we get older. My dh still has a relative that lives there but the rest of his and my family have moved away.

There are different parts, but there are certainly some nice houses and parks.

It has an underside, but is largely full of families. Like many areas. I feel comfortable getting the bus, walking around and socialising... but it’s also clearly apparent it’s deprived isn’t it?

I'm thinking of specifically Edmonton green. It seemed surprisingly normal given all I had heard about it.

It’s probably quieter than usual I’d factor in.

Wouldn't be my preferred area in North London. Colleagues have had cars broken into and have been mugged around there.

Grew up in Enfield, had loads of friends in Edmonton so I know it well. It is the pits - avoid.

I lived in Enfield for years and there is definitely a divide across the A10 - you can't ignore the deprivation in Edmonton, though of course that doesn't make the residents bad people. A friend taught in a primary school there and had pupils who started school with no concept of using a pencil, had zero books at home etc. That doesn't mean it's not safe the vast majority of the time.

Try going to Edmonton Green bus station at the end of a school day once schools are fully back. Then take a walk in the shopping centre and see how you feel.
