Are box dyes any good for your hair

Dawny65 · 13/06/2020 10:54

I have grey hair and always go to the hairdressers to have my hair coloured. As you can imagine my roots are pretty bad now. My colleagues (I am only a temp) have been saying get a box dye on it for now & it will be a lot better. We have a dress code & hints are being dropped that my scruffy roots will be frowned upon by male directors. Whilst I agree you should have smart hair for work it's pretty difficult with hairdressers being closed! I absolutely resent being told to use a box dye because male directors frown upon my scruffy roots. They should show more understanding in my opinion. Should I just cave in & conform, or stand my ground? (They have gone past the point of using root touch up spray)

Fuck what make directors think. Seriously.

ambereeree · 13/06/2020 10:57

Box dye is fine and easy to use. I feel scruffy with my greys too and it's really ageing.

Boom45 · 13/06/2020 10:58

I use box dye - my hair has been grey since my early 20s and I couldn't afford to have it professionally done then so I've just carried on. My hair is in good condition and I dont think I've done it any greater harm using box dyes than i wouldve going to the hair dresses to have it done.
That said, if my employer were trying to tell me to dye my hair, especially during lockdown, and I didnt want to I'd tell them to get stuffed

HellSmith · 13/06/2020 10:59

Box dye is the same as what the hairdresser uses. If you want to wait for the hairdresser to open do that an all, & tell them the cunts to fuck off.

HellSmith · 13/06/2020 11:00

That was supposed to be tell the cheeky cunts to fuck off.

Ginfordinner · 13/06/2020 11:00

I have been using box dye since lockdown began. I am doing it for me, not for anyone else.

What the directors think is none of their business. If you want to use a box dye do it because it makes you feel better about yourself, not because there is an expectation from someone else.

Spied · 13/06/2020 11:01

If it would make you feel better then use a box dye. I've used them many times and my hair is in great condition.
If you don't personally feel your hair is making you feel yuk then don't dye it just to keep others happy and leave it natural.

JustC · 13/06/2020 11:02

Your colleagues are are insensitive and rude. With or without coronavirus, we should be able to grow our greys without being made to feel crap about it. As long as it's not unkempt when on camera with work , I fail to see how it's an issue. Don't any of your male colleagues have graying hair, have they been told they should dye it?
If you just want to do it for yourself, then go ahead. Google 'best dyi hair dyes' and you will get varying results depending on hair colour, how long they last etc.

Jaxhog · 13/06/2020 11:05

I'm using e-Salon. Much better quality and a very wide range of personalized colours. They do nice aftercare products too. Pricey, but not as pricey as the hairdresser.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 13/06/2020 11:06

Seriously, the directors and colleagues can piss off with that attitude but if you do want to do it for yourself, box dyes are fine.

I use one myself and the first time is messy so make sure your top is off, you have an old or dark coloured towel over your shoulder and take your time.

Dawny65 · 13/06/2020 11:11

I have to admit that I'm not feeling great about my hair; but I've waited this long so I don't see what difference a few more weeks is going to make. I hadn't thought about it like that, men can grow their grey hair withoit comment, but women can't! 😡

I use Daniel Field watercolours, and they are really conditioning. But only dye your hair if you want to - furious on your behalf at the sexist arseholes at your company. Would they expect the same of a greying man?

Waveysnail · 13/06/2020 11:13

Most of my friends are just spraying their roots

MrsEricBana · 13/06/2020 11:13

Blimey, yes DEFINITELY don't do it for "Male directers" or indeed for any of the directors, but in my opinion box dye is fab. My top tip is L"Oreal Casting Creme Gloss. The "Iced" colours are the best as the others come out far too red I think e.g. Iced Chocolate for a fab brunette, Iced Latte for a paler reddy, golden brown. They say semi permanent but I don't think they are really in so far as they contain peroxide so are actually changing your hair colour not just colouring over the top. I do this because my mother has always used box dyes and her hair always looks like she's had a professional colour (I think she uses L'Oreal Excellence which calls itself permanent). My friend did an online Josh Wood consultation recently and they sent her their recommended colour which was nice (but it was the same effect as I get with the Iced Latte above). Also people talk about salon?

eSalon

VanGoghsDog · 13/06/2020 11:20

I've used Casting for the first time ever and it's totally fine. Go down a shade though, they are far darker than you expect.

It's semi permanent but I did it six weeks ago and while it does look a little lighter now, the greys are not showing through. Mind you, it says 28 washes and I'm only washing my hair two or three times a week currently.

But do not give in to sexism in the workplace. In the face of those comments I would make a complaint!
I don't wear make up to work and years ago I had a boss who told he I should do. Obviously I ignored her!

WhoWants2Know · 13/06/2020 11:20

I use box dyes and my hair always feels better afterwards.

altiara · 13/06/2020 11:23

I use box dyes from the supermarket, they’re fine on my hair. But if work were telling me to dye my hair, then I probably wouldn’t as it’s mine if their business!

Beautiful3 · 13/06/2020 11:34

I've used l'oreal creme gloss semi permanent. They are very good. They aren't permanent, so washes out over time (10/12 washes). That would be a better option until the salons reopen.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/06/2020 11:36

Nothing wrong at all with box dyes, not sure why they would be and salon dyes are equally full of chemicals.

I hope all your directors have been box dyeing their grey away and keeping their hair tidy. After all, there are company dress codes to adhere to.

FrolickingFannyBoots · 13/06/2020 11:37

Ive been using box dyes for about 5 years now since my roots went grey in my early 40’s. I can’t bear having grey hair ( I have olive skin tones and very dark hair so grey really shows- when I’m older I’ll dye it shocking white lol!) and can’t afford a salon, so I use them. My best ones are L’Oreal Creme Casting ( semi permanent), L’Oreal Excellence ( permanent) and Nutrisse (permanent). I’ve tried e-salon and I didn’t like it ; the amount chemical smell was really strong and it made my hair very dry. But that’s just me. I have fine hair so you have to try different ones and see how your hair responds. Olia I found doesn’t last, after 2 weeks my greys were all back. You definitely need a heavy duty conditioner too with dying hair in my experience if you have fine hair , as the chemicals make it brittle and flyaway. I have used both semi and permanent dyes and my greys still come through after a few weeks with all of them. I can recommend root touch ups- Clairol is a popular one and I find that works as well as a full box hair dye. They used to be cheaper at £3-4 but the price has gone up now to £6 making the root touch ups as expensive as a full box dye. Josh Wood root touch ups are good make but more pricey at £15 if so. Naturetint you can buy in health food shops such a Holland & Barrat but I have not used them so can’t report on how good they are. Don’t be under pressure though to dye just because of make directors- not easy to resist that of course but it’s your hair! Hope you find something that suits. Overall, I’ve found L’Oreal dyes the best, with Clairol Root Touch Up my preferred option for a quick fix. Smile

Thesheerrelief · 13/06/2020 11:40

Esalon here too. Just for me because I feel better in myself when my greys are covered

DestinationFkd · 13/06/2020 11:41

I've been home dying my hair for the best part of 40 years, including colour stripping.
My hair has always been in great condition, even my hairdresser compliments it.
When they're open!

C152H · 13/06/2020 11:44

Having a formal dress code is one thing, but telling people they should colour their hair is another. As long as your hair is neat, clean and off your face, that's fine. Personally, I would not change my hair colour for anyone else. However, if you want to change it for yourself, I use John Frieda Precision Foam Colour - it's quick, easy to use and the result looks just as good as the hair dresser. It's often on special in Boots / Superdrug.
