Or am I just a complete wuss? Don't read this thread if you're squeamish!

DON'T READ THIS THREAD IF YOU'RE FUNNY ABOUT TEETH & BLOOD!

there, hopefully you're fairly hardy if you have got this far.

OK, never had any fear of doctors, dentists, needles etc. As a kid had 6 teeth out one December (in 2 separate goes) so when I needed an emargency extraction, I really wasn't all that bothered, just thought thank goodness the constant toothache would go!

Went to hospital & after the injections I genuinely thought the worst was over - but how wrong was I?

Is it normal to have someone hold you down whilst the dentist pulls? The tooth split & the bits took ages to get out, then it was over 7 hours before the bleeding stopped. I was on pain killers & sleeping tablets for the next 48 hours! Alos had the worst smelly breath of my life, possibly because I could eat nothing.

So, am I being unreasonable to think this is quite an unusually bad experience? Is having teeth out just one of the (many) things which is worse once you're an adult? Or am I just little mis wuss of wussland who should grow up & toughen up?

not a wuss at all, it's a horrible thing to have done

kickassangel · 23/09/2007 22:22

littlelapin - i think i was close to your scenario - i was there for half an hour & she kept frowning & trying different instruments.

before the main bit went, it was like some kind of comedy scene - my whole head kept twisting round so much & my feet were squirming & i got a nervous laugh as they wrestled around in my mouth!

and no, idid not rinse with salt water the first day, and nobody offered to pack my hole with anything!

was it top or bottom teeth? apparently bottom teeth are much harder than top ones...

i had my top wisdom teeth aken out by a LOVELY and talented man named mr Popat (will never forget it!) about, um 8 yrs ago? ages anyway. he had a good firm grip, a strong tug and out they each came.

went home and holed up in bed with the hardcore painkillers and waited for the pain and bruising to come... never happened. the mans a saint. worked then at the royal london staff clinic (my mums a mw) if anyone wants to track him down!

i was supposed to go back to have the bottom 2 out under ga... never went. and now ive read this thread, i prob never will! am v glad of it too!

poor, poor all of you.

and man, these experiences sound much worse than childbirth imo!

tori32 · 23/09/2007 22:33

No thats not unusual for an infected tooth to splinter into bits. Poor you though. I am funny about teeth and opted to have my 4 teeth out under GA. Hows that for wussiness!!!

kindersurprise · 23/09/2007 22:34

Poor you, that sounds horrible.

I was at the dentist for the first time in ages this week and was dreading him (a new dentist) telling me that the wisdom teeth have to come out. He told me that I if they were his teeth he would leave them in, that as long as they are not botherign me then they can stay.

I almost kissed him. Would have been a bad idea, since his DS goes to our Kindergarten, but I was sooo relieved.

He did say that the top wisdom teeth normally come out no bother, but the bottom ones can be more stubborn and difficult to get out.

Hope you feel better soon, and no you are not being a wuss.

kindersurprise · 23/09/2007 22:36

Oh, and a friend of mine was a dental nurse and she says it is much better to get them out while you are awake. If you get them done under GA, then you do not know what the doc is doing, they are much more careful when the patient is awake.

tori32 · 23/09/2007 22:40

Thats very true LOL. I have assisted with several dental extractions since!

kickassangel · 23/09/2007 22:41

not a wisdom tooth, a big upper one (can't see the gap when i smile).
someone at work told me about having wisdom teeth out under GA, and apparently they had to kneel on her chest to pull hard enough.

who chooses this as their profession? seriously, this woman just spent all morning pulling teeth. At what point in life did she think, ooh, yes, that will be fun to do every day? what kind of job satisfaction is that?

in some places i believe the attraction is money. dentists earn big bucks. but no idea of that is true here...
