I have always thought the hobbit films are far better than LOTR, just wanted to see what other people think

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you op, there was way too much padding out in the hobbit movies, there was not enough original material in them to warrant a trilogy.

rosiejaune · 13/06/2020 14:31

I haven't seen the films, but I prefer The Hobbit book to the LOTR series.

Cabinfever10 · 13/06/2020 14:38

They cut far to much from the books when it came to the LOTR.
Besides the hobbit has

YABVU!

Mad, mad I tells you!

Sciurus83 · 13/06/2020 14:47

Now books yes, the Hobbit is better, but films...nooooo

JasperRising · 13/06/2020 14:53

Books you would not be being unreasonable. Films YABU. The Hobbit is one slim book compared with three huge LOTR books - no way did it need stretching over three films. That's not to say the LoTR films are perfect (though I do enjoy them) but the Hobbit would have been better as one film.

@FaceOfASpink

Never mind the manly stubble, what about an award for the Hottest Ever Legs Whilst Running To Light A Beacon?
fans self vigorously be still my beating heart!

@Spanishcove

You totally should, *@AragornsManlyStubble*. If only for your Sexiest Ever Opening of a Large Door scene. And the fact that yoU briefly made pipe-smoking look cool.

The LOTR films’ other big boon was leaving out Tom ‘Annoying Little Ditties’ Bombadil and the wet and winsome Goldberry.

Aww, I liked Tom Bombadil and Goldberry. The nature spirits/beings always seemed to be more interesting than the worthy witterings of Dwarf and Elf.

The padding to make a perfectly good story into three whole films was tiresome; at least the multiple end scenes in ROTK were just in the one movie, not making an entire film's worth of them.

The books were fantastic - the films were fine in that 'I have nothing to do for three hours' way - but what is absolutely spellbinding was the BBC Radio dramatization of the entire LOTR. I wish it was still available.

@Aclh13

Love this thread, but have to disagree with most of you, the books and films were better on every single level. Likewise goes for fantastic beasts over Harry Potter and eventually for the Cs Lewis fans, the magicians nephew over narnia
I love The Magician's Nephew, it's my favourite besides TLTWTW. I dont why they didnt do that instead of the Prince Caspian bollocks Angry.
Mookie81 · 13/06/2020 18:50

Plus I hate Martin Freeman. He seems to be fake nice and smiley but I bet he's a real arsehole in real life. Anyone know if I'm right?!Grin

MidsomerMum · 13/06/2020 18:51

The Hobbit is a better book than LOTR but that doesn’t always stretch to meaning a film will be better.

I actually think it’s really unfair to compare them. They are trilogies in their own right. LOTR wins for me, mainly because they managed to develop every character they needed too. The Hobbit would have been far, far better if they had given the rest of the dwarves more to do than being glorified extras. That group is as important to the hobbit as the fellowship are to LOTR. Sidelining them caused huge plot discrepancies. Even now, and I actually comfort watch The Hobbit films fairly regularly, I have no idea who all of the dwarves are.

MidsomerMum · 13/06/2020 18:52

Also, part of the charm and ruggedness of LOTR comes from how well they balanced CGI with make up, real locations etc. That was completely lost in The Hobbit, to the point that Sir Ian often filmed completely alone!

Figgygal · 13/06/2020 18:54

No way
They are padded beyond recognition of the book in some places total money generator for the studio

I remember reading the lotr books then reading the hobbit straight after and was so disappointed so never been a fan

BarbedBloom · 13/06/2020 19:00

I hated the hobbit films, so overstretched and I love the book. I had some issues with the LOTR films but they are vastly superior

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 13/06/2020 19:22

@ Mookie81
You're not wrong. Nasty man.
OP: YABVVVU. The Hobbit was overstretched, shoddily written, visually confused (Guillermo del Toro designed the orcs, so they look a completely different species) and Richsrd Armitage's nose kept getting in the way.

Graffitiqueen · 13/06/2020 19:30

The hobbit films are dreadful. I actually apologised to DH in the middle of one of them for putting it on. I am a massive fan of the LOTR films so was dreadfully disappointed.

Making it into three films was such a stupid idea as it totally wrecked it.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 14/06/2020 03:32

Has anyone a better example of books epic fantasy books done well as movie/tv Shannara was awful, GOT was amazing but completely died at the end

GlumyGloomer · 14/06/2020 08:21

@thecatsthecats
I would so buy an abridged back into the actual story version on the Hobbit!

TranielleRadcliffe · 14/06/2020 08:32

I regularly watch all six films. Already twice through this lockdown. Blush DH thinks I’m mad but I loved all 6 films. LOTR was better though.
