To think this kind of baking, isn't really baking?

I'm a member of a baking group on FB. Where people take photos of what they've baked that day. That's all. It's nice.

But over half of these creations are based on some other kind of baked good/biscuit/chocolate/confectionery.

Mars bar and Malteser slice, Biscoff and Rolo cheesecake, chocolate orange and Toblerone brownies.

Maybe I'm just hangry.

But it's a bit annoying. Why is everyones baking using branded goods that already exist?!

@FortunesFave your post is extremely obnoxious. And the way you say 'yogurt' and 'risotto' is disgusting. You really think you're so much better than Americans because you pronounce some words differently and you don't understand the regional variation on a caramel apple?

PickAChew · 12/06/2020 23:33

I'm amazed hat people are still struggling with eggs. M&S has been fully stocked throughout. Our little coop has plenty, too. They've had to diversify into a local supplier but that's no hardship because they're cheaper than their own and have lovely thick yolks.

user8558 · 12/06/2020 23:36

I'm back because this is keeping me awake now.

I'm glad some people understand.

My objection is that neither benefits the other.

If you want a brownie, have a brownie. Have large chunks of milk chocolate in it if you like. Or have Toblerone. There's nothing to be gained by combining the two. They don't enhance one another. If you were not told it had Toblerone in it, you wouldn't be able to identify it.

In normal timed people might use crushed biscuits as a base but that's a sly timesaver, it's not the main attraction, it's not Digestive and vanilla cheesecake.

I'm only irritated because 75% of what's on there is like this, it's the fact they're all doing it. Some are doing 3 different things a day but they're essentially just different combinations of melted chocolate bars. What's the point?

My mum is a WI member (she keeps trying to persuade me to join the cult. I may give in, once day!) and she's had to endure some pretty awful baking from her local groups. Lots of soggy bottoms and saggy bakes. Mince pies which are more pie than mincemeat. With soggy bottoms.

altiara · 12/06/2020 23:39

They’re just using them as an ingredient.
I wouldn’t get too annoyed. It could be worse if they were using cake packet mixes!

I quite fancy chocolate orange now, but last time I had some it tasted slimey and not how I remembered. Obvo I ate it all just to make sure.

Ps. It is ok to use Nutella? In brownies?

Maybe it’s because of YouTube- DS is getting all his awful receipes from YouTube - he made Oreo fudge! 🤢 it was Oreos, white choc and condensed milk. Bloody waste of ingredients. It’s disgusting. The Oreos were ok.

PickAChew · 12/06/2020 23:42

My main issue with the already done pastry is the palm oil. The all butter stuff is rare and bloody expensive

dellacucina · 12/06/2020 23:44

@user8558 I think maybe you need to find a more "serious" baking group. Their bakes sound a bit lame / unsophisticated.

SoupDragon · 12/06/2020 23:50

That's just not true. Unless you add chunks of chocolate and those nougaty bits into your brownies.

You certainly knew there was a whole Lindor baked into the middle of my Lindor cupcakes...

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 12/06/2020 23:54

OP what is the FB page please? I want to join !

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 12/06/2020 23:57

dellacucina

I'm enjoying the thread, I thought hand making butter cream was sophisticated ,now I know I've been fooled.

81Byerley · 12/06/2020 23:59

Stop moaning and make me a mars bar and malteser slice...

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 13/06/2020 00:00

@Usernamealreadyexists ... you've clearly never eaten one of Fay Ripleys Galaxy Brownies !

Serin · 13/06/2020 00:01

Look 'ere!
If they self identify as bakers then who are we really to criticise?
Bless em all.
I have been self identifying as a barber since lockdown.

UnderCaffeinated · 13/06/2020 00:06

Unfortunately I cannot get behind you on this one. I really enjoy things like biscoff cheesecake and nutella brownies. It's like a wonderful marriage of things I enjoy. My mum makes cakes for a cafe and things like mint aero chocolate cake always go down the best, along with her Victoria Sponge.

I'm no baking purist though. I love to bake and cook from scratch but I also have a soft spot for Betty Crocker's cake mixes and I have no idea why I love them, and their vanilla icing (I do not enjoy their buttercream one) and honestly for some reason I enjoy Betty Crocker cake mixes more than any homebaked cake. I know, awful.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 13/06/2020 00:06

Really? Our local supermarket has been out of stock since beginning of lockdown.
They've recently come back but they're a more expensive brand and triple the price of what they were (think 3 pounds instead of 1!)

Look 'ere! If they self identify as bakers then who are we really to criticise?
FFS lol, can an innocuous baking thread not turn into a trans one lol Grin

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 13/06/2020 00:09

Oh, and forgot to add I love cooking/baking groups on FB. I'm in loads, and some of my favourites are the more OMG ones lol.
Hillbilly Cooking I love for example and Crap I Cooked in Quarantine Grin
Both epic

TheFormerPorpentiaScamander · 13/06/2020 00:12

Same here with eggs Lemonade. And they may well be in stock in M&S but as I cant afford to shop there it's not really relevant.

dellacucina · 13/06/2020 00:15

@Onewasblueandyellowtoo to be entirely honest, I'm not sure if you're being sarcasticBlush

Homemade buttercream is one thing. Incessant recipes involving various packaged goods is another!

globetrotter141 · 13/06/2020 00:22

I make brownies with melted dark chocolate, if I use a branded product eg green and blacks does that mean it's not baking?! Confused or if is it only not baking if I use Terry's choc orange? Weird. Those branded products are surely just ingredients. It's pretty impossible for anyone to make chocolate from scratch so is anything made with chocolate therefore not baking?

globetrotter141 · 13/06/2020 00:23

And definitely want to try toblerone brownies now!

TheFormerPorpentiaScamander · 13/06/2020 00:24

Im adding toblerone to my next order Grin

CuppaZa · 13/06/2020 00:26

I’d say you’re hangry OP Wink

7ofNine · 13/06/2020 00:33

I just want to know how Americans pronounce risotto please, @dellacucina

AngryPrincess · 13/06/2020 00:35

Yeah, I agree. And anything that uses a cake mix, even if you add other stuff.

Moominmammaatsea · 13/06/2020 00:40

Going to stick my head above the parapet (briefly) and opine that baking is just a middle class, socially acceptable way of consuming too many calories and too much sugar. I really can’t stand people (sadly, mainly women) who turn baking into a competitive sport - and virtue - in a 1950s throwback way. It’s just cake! And none of us, especially during lockdown, need more calories from flour, sugar and butter.
