To ask about your internal ultrasound

Me and my partner have been trying for a baby for some time with no success. I'm due to go for an internal ultrasound next week to see if there are any obvious problems and just wanted to know what it's like. The idea creeps me out a bit!
Yanbu- it's ok
Yabu - it's awful

Better than a smear - disclaimer I live in France and have found their way of doing smears dreadful.

Samtsirch · 12/06/2020 21:17

Mine was fine.
I was extremely nervous beforehand, but I would choose this over a smear test any day of the week.

mynameiscalypso · 12/06/2020 21:18

I have PTSD and find internal exams very hard (to the extent that I had a c section rather than give birth vaginally) and I found the internal ultrasounds fine. Not fun, obviously, but way easier than I expected.

GameSetMatch · 12/06/2020 21:19

Oh it’s fine, they just lube up a probe, gently insert it and then have a look around the take it out again, no bigger than a penis, it’s really fine. Much more comfortable than a smear. It’s just like inserting a vibrator when not ‘excited’.

ShebaShimmyShake · 12/06/2020 21:21

It's not exactly fun but it doesn't hurt. They use plenty of lube and are very gentle. You might need to put your fists under your bum to lift your pelvis.

Boom45 · 12/06/2020 21:21

Worst thing about mine was the very well meaning hospital lady who insisted on holding my hand and occasionally stroking my hair. I was having the internal to see what the hell mess they'd made of my insides after a very difficult c-section and I think I looked pretty ill when I turned up so I think she thought she was helping me feel better. She did not....

VimFuego101 · 12/06/2020 21:23

Cold and weird but not nearly as bad as a smear test.

BritWifeinUSA · 12/06/2020 21:25

I’ve had numerous rounds of various forms of assisted conception. The internal ultrasounds are nothing to worry about. The gel can get cold and messy so take some wipes with you and a liner for your knickers. The paper towels they give you to wipe yourself with afterwards are not great. It’s a quick procedure. They know what they are looking for and do this all the time so they won’t take long.

I’ve had tattoos and this is nothing in comparison with regards to pain.

Craftycorvid · 12/06/2020 21:25

Yes, it’s fine. Had one recently for post-meno’ bleeding investigation (all was well).

ALongHardWinter · 12/06/2020 21:27

I had one about ten years ago. It was less uncomfortable than a smear test, tbh. I was slightly annoyed that they didn't tell me that I didn't need a full bladder though! I'd drunk loads of water beforehand and was kept waiting for ages. When I asked the receptionist how much longer I was going to have to wait because I didn't think I could hold it much longer, she looked at me in surprise and said that I didn't need a full bladder for an internal ultrasound,on the contrary,I should have as empty a bladder as possible! I don't think I've ever legged it to the toilet so fast! Grin

Fatted · 12/06/2020 21:28

I had one for non pregnancy reasons and it was fine. The only thing I did find was it had a strange sensation. Weird vibrating sensation.

When I had mine, the patient in the room before me was an old man. Made me feel a little bit better about having mine.

Mistymonday · 12/06/2020 21:29

I’ve had a few and it’s fine. A bit dildo ish. On one occasion at a specific point in my cycle I found it a bit more pleasurable than I care to admit Wink

Mistymonday · 12/06/2020 21:30

Sorry tmi!

AliasGrape · 12/06/2020 21:30

I’ve had quite a few too (fertility investigations/treatment and then eventually pregnancy).

Adding my voice to the ‘it’s really fine’ chorus - it’s not my favourite thing but I agree it’s probably not as ‘bad’ as a smear. There was once when they had some query over the shape of my uterus and there was a lot of moving about/ odd angles which was pretty uncomfortable but even then it wasn’t actually painful and they are always so unfazed and professional. Practice your relaxed breathing (in for 3 out for 6 or in for 4 out for 8 if you can) and tell yourself it’ll be over very quickly!

EnlightenedOwl · 12/06/2020 21:31

Absolutely fine not painful you do feel it moving around but it doesn't hurt. You are covered over as well so not too embarrassing. Second it feeling messy you can wipe yourself but I had a shower when I got home. I had to have a pillow underneath me on the bed presumably to help access. The sonographer thought she had seen something on the external ultrasound so decided to do an internal scan turned out to be endometrial polyps

EnlightenedOwl · 12/06/2020 21:33

Btw I had to have a full bladder for external scan then go for a pee and back in again for internal scan

runrabbitrunrunrun · 12/06/2020 21:33

Much rather have one of those than a smear.
Close your eyes, deep breathes and imagine you are on the beach with a cocktail 🍸

Rubbleonthedouble1 · 12/06/2020 21:33

A bit weird but not as bad as I was expecting it to be. Nothing like a smear. Uncomfortable when they angle it but otherwise ok x

GrowingGreenGrass · 12/06/2020 21:45

Fine, much better than a smear.

seven201 · 12/06/2020 21:47

I'm doing ivf so well aquatinted with dildo cam. It's much better than a smear. They cover you up with a sheet and only have a quick peek to see where to insert the probe then they're focused on the monitor. Sometimes you feel pressure when they're trying to get a clear view of something. It's honestly fine. It wears a condom and lube which is a bit funny.

dicksplash · 12/06/2020 22:30

I had one. Initially appointment was with a man and I didn't feel at all comfortable so refused and made a new appointment with a woman.

It was very similar to a smear. These things are never pleasant but a necessary evil.

Minai · 12/06/2020 22:32

Absolutely fine. I’ve had 2, felt much less intrusive than a smear test.

GrumpyHoonMain · 12/06/2020 22:33

I took two paracetamol and two ibuprofen beforehand as I find internal exams difficult. It wasn’t too bad except when the nurse was twisting and pushing the probe to get a better view of my ovaries.

MrsMonkeyBear · 12/06/2020 22:41

I had 2 (1 in each pregnancy) to check my cervix thickness. I had previous treatment for pre-cancerous cells.

Tbh, I didnt feel much that I remember, but nowhere near as uncomfortable as a smear.

lucieee · 12/06/2020 22:50

Thanks so much for your replies ThanksI've never had a problem with smears so if it's not even as bad as that hopefully I'll be ok!
