To get a cat or kitten?

We have long thought about it but have resisted as we live on a 30mph road. It's not busy all day, mostly at school drop off /pick up and 5ish. But as it's straight people tend to pick up a bit of speed.

The kids are now wearing us down about getting one - particularly a kitten (and I would love them to have a pet!) so I said I'd look into it.

I don't think a rescue place would let us have a pet due to the road, so would I be unreasonable to look elsewhere and get one anyway? And if it's not unreasonable, where do we get a kitten that isn't from somewhere dodgy?

For context I have never seen a cat knocked down on our road and there are a few around that I see regularly - but I know that's no guarantee of safety!

Thanks for any advice!

Rescue an indoor cat? My Dsis has a battersea rescue which they said is an indoor cat for particular reasons although a garden would be nice. The cat went out once..

Lots of shelters have cats which are used to being indoor only cats, so it’s worth asking!

Thanks - I'll call and ask about indoor cats. The kids desperately want a kitten but I guess most kittens will want to explore the great outdoors!
I grew up with cats that came and went as they pleased so hadn't considered an indoor cat

I've had a kitten on a 30mph road –it never occurred to me at the time that it could be dangerous! He was fine and lived to be an old man and stopped roaming so far as he aged.

That said, having had both kittens and older cats, I'd always rescue oldies now. Kittens grow into teenagers who want to be off exploring. Older cats tend to mooch about with you and (in my experience) are much cuddlier. This obviously depends on the individual temperament of the cat.

Ideally, I'd get two older cats from a rescue.

I have three indoor cats that I’ve had since kittens. They’ll go sniff the garden but that’s it.

I much prefer knowing that they are safe at home as we are on a very busy main road.
