Sorry this is a long one. TLDR: Essentially we were gifted land from ex-neighbour when they died. New neighbours who bought her house has told us we must sell it to them.

A bit more backstorey. Our elderly neighbour lived next to us until they died in late December. She had a side bit of garden like an allotment that we used to help her with (hatched area on diagram). Unbeknownst to us she gifted us that area of land in her will. The rest of the house and land was to be sold and the money given to charity.

After the will reading we have had the land registry changed to confirm we now own the land. The house was put up for sale late January. In mid February we received a letter from a solicitor asking that we sell the land to the potential buyer of the house. We emailed back saying no we won't sell. We then heard nothing more from any solicitors. House was then sold during lockdown.

The new neighbours moved in on Monday. Yesterday they came to our door asking for the name of our solicitor so the land purchase can take place. We told them we were not planning on selling the land and that we told their solicitor that. The new neighbours didn't take it well. Apparently they only bought the house on the provision that they could buy the land and this was agreed with us via their solicitors.

The new neighbours got quite loud and angry about us apparently misleading them and left to speak to their solicitor. They seem to think we legally need to sell them the land as there was a written (email) contract between them and their solicitor who confirmed to them by email prior to the sale of the house that we would sell the land.

Aibu to a) not sell the land even though we technically didn't buy it and b) that the fact their solicitor has mislead them is not our problem?

Neighbours land is in red.
Our land is in black and the hatched area is the land they expect to buy.

How utterly unbelievable. Who in their right mind would think that those emails mean that you are definitely going to sell the land. Those emails are a made up pile of rubbish.

Yorkshiremummyof1 · 12/06/2020 09:57

If the op never returns I’m quitting mumsnet

ktp100 · 12/06/2020 10:09

@Yorkshiremummyof1 I hear ya. Hate it when we're all invested and the OP disappears.

awesomeaircraft · 12/06/2020 10:25

OP concluded on Wed that I'm not going to involve myself in anything further as I know definitely it's our land and it's probably best to stay out of it.

No need for them to return.

BruceAndNosh · 12/06/2020 10:32

The OP may or may not return when there is something to say.
I think people who demand constant updates are bloody rude.
Most people (not me obviously) have lives to get on with, hopefully a job and don't actually spend the entire day on MN.

Something "exciting" happening every few hours are normally the marks of a made up situation.
The neighbours need to time to contact their imaginary solicitor and it will take them a while to concoct some new cod Latin for his reply.
or possibly they'll just give up and leave the OP and her land in peace

To be fair, my comment was intended as tongue in cheek, I’m amusing myself whilst on the worlds most boring conference call that I’m not reallly even needed for
MulticolourMophead · 12/06/2020 10:55

OP has a life away from MN, and as she's said she's not getting involved any further, I'm guessing will only come back if there's actually any reason to update. As long as OP sticks to "No, land is mine, it's not for sale" I doubt there'll be any reason to update. I just hope the CFers don't try anything illegal, now.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/06/2020 14:01

BTW @WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll that is literally the best user name on Mumsnet currently.

If you could translate it into Latin the OP might agree to come back and update.

Why, thank you, OVienna Blush

Warmest regards,

DadDadDad · 12/06/2020 14:09

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll : Agitantibus = buffet? Sounds like it's coming from a verb like "agitare" which would be to do with the "buffeted by the wind" meaning of buffet, surely.

I'm also not sure if volumine is right for roll...

Rubyupbeat · 12/06/2020 14:10

Rubbish, also if I were in their position, I would have knocked and asked about the sale of it first.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/06/2020 14:11

I don't think OP will have anything to update based on her own actions - we're just fascinated to know if Dad gets in touch or if she receives any more official correspondence from Messrs Peppercorn, Grabland & Cashin LLP (Legal Latin Pretenders).

I guess it's out of her hands until and unless they do. Much as we'd all love the drama, it would be much better for OP and DH if they realise that their ludicrous scheme has failed, admit defeat and throw away their Acme Land Takeover Kit in disgust.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/06/2020 14:15

DadDadDad

How very dare you! Are you implying that I am NOT a first-class Latin scholar and simply ran it though Google Translate?! It actually asked if I meant Buffett rather than buffet - I was just waiting for Microsoft to barge in to the act and for a little paperclip to pop up and say "It looks like you're trying to defraud an American billionaire of his vegetable patch - would you like some assistance?"

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/06/2020 14:16

"buffeted by the wind"

Too many sausage rolls will do that to you, mind....

cstaff · 12/06/2020 14:47

@webuiltthisbuffetonsausageroll
I love your law firm Peppercorn Grabland and Cashin LLP. I think I used to work for them Grin.

Is your latin school taught or Google learnt..🤣🤣🤣

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/06/2020 14:54

Definitely the latter!

intheningnangnong · 12/06/2020 16:17

OP has a life away from MN

A hollow worthless existence, surely! Grin

I think the old classic caveat emptor is the only Latin the CF needs for this situation.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 12/06/2020 19:28

Carpe diem, that all I've got. Although this may be what the neighbours are trying to do.

DadDadDad · 12/06/2020 21:32

Is it sad that I can recite from memory an entire Latin grace [with undoubtedly a few errors]: occuli omnium in te aspiciunt et in te sperant, Deus. Sic maneamus in illo. Per Iesum Christum dominum nostrum.

OVienna · 12/06/2020 21:59

I don't think I've ever been more disappointed at no update.

I mean - clearly this is highly selfish.

KitchenConfidential · 12/06/2020 22:04

Blahblahblah12345 · 12/06/2020 22:53

Can we have an update? Pretty please.
