to expect to come out from the hairdressers looking different to when I went in...??

I mean seriously - I went to the hairdressers and asked for a radically different cut because I am so fed up of having the same old long boring hair. I come out looking exactly the same. The sad thing is it happens everytime I go and I pay, say thank you and even tip and say nothing. Pathetic or what?

Ive been to several different salons and it always happpens. Picture/no picture no matter what I say they cut in a side fringe and layer the front. Its like they all just know one haircut for long hair-but then how can this be when I see long haired girls with lovely cuts.

So fed up of paying to look the same and being such a wimp about it.

how odd

Think you need to have a definite idea and try somehwere new.

Be specific.

IME hairdressers often have set pieces which they tend to use so I sympathise. Does sound like being a bit more assertive might be useful though?

Scotia · 23/09/2007 14:15

I sympathise too. I've lost count of the times I have said 'Please don't cut it in a bob' and left with another bob. I'm too much of a wimp to say anything either.

staryeyed · 23/09/2007 14:18

I really did try Beansprout. I said "actually I would like a lot more off please" when she was looking like she was near finishing after what seemed no more than a trim. Then she just trimmed a bit more then I asked again when she hadnt cut much more off. But on the third time of asking she said it would mess it all up if she did any more. Its like they are scared I will sue if they chop any more tan an inch off.

Unless you have stacks cut off, one long hair cut is probably much the same as another.

Ask for a skinhead. You'll look different then

NotADragonOfSoup · 23/09/2007 14:21

Go in, say "I'd like it cut to here" and point to the length you want.

InMyHumbleOpinion · 23/09/2007 14:24

Same happens to me. It doesn't matter what picture I point to, what I get is a side parted layered bob. And told to "Buy GHDs, they're, like, amazing"

I don't WANT to buy bloody GHD's to make a 19 year old hairdresser's life easier so she doesn't have to think of a hair cut that works with waves, which she hasn't seen since GHD's were invented

I NEED volume in my hair, I have a fat face!

bran · 23/09/2007 14:25

Are you going to chain hairdresser? I went to Toni and Guy and found that they only had a certain hairstyle with no real variation no matter what I asked for.

I'd say you need a recommendation for an independent hairdresser. I asked for a recommendation on MN and I love and adore the hairdresser that I now go to.

SSSandy2 · 23/09/2007 14:28

They probably get so many women coming in with long hair and going out in tears because it's now too short. THey're just too scared to give you the chop.

Maybe it just looks great the way it is.

Actually having had a few botch jobs done myself, I would say you're lucky if you come out with your hair looking the way it did when you went in!

bluefox · 23/09/2007 14:31

happens to me all the time - went last week, came home and dh asks "have you been then?"

staryeyed · 23/09/2007 14:48

Exactly Bluefox no one even realises Ive been.

I have had a few disasters in the past (think Pat Sharp in the 80's so Im glad that it comes out ok. That's one of the reasons Im scared to say anything in case they aren't competent enough to do what I'm asking for and I end up looking like I've done 10 rounds with a lawnmower.

I did have a really good hairdresser who listened carefully to what I wanted and confirmed it back to me. Unfortunately she left about 2 years ago. Ive been trying to replace her ever since. Tried Tony and Guy, and independent salons and found no one that can do what I ask. Its just funny when I have given them a picture and they are trying to convince me that my hair is the same.

SSSandy2 · 23/09/2007 14:49

Oh I know and you'Re saying NO my hair is NOT the same. That hair is a chin leg bob and my hair is draped over my boobs, look now, can you see the difference or not?

staryeyed · 23/09/2007 14:51

exactly sssandy2 lol

IMHO, that is EXACTLY what i feel, like re- ghds. i have naturally curly hair that isn't 'fashionable' so therefore no hairdresser i have been to in the past couple of years seems trained to cut and style it..

and not one owns a diffuser...

i look back at my wedding photos and cringe, despite spending a fortune on a practice run first.

In my experience, hairdressers do what they want, not what you ask for (unless you want the same ironed look as everyone else, then you are laughing!)

softballwidow · 23/09/2007 17:46

boy ,do i sound bitter
