to think the chances of my son having covid but me and my dad not having it are slim?

Son has been unwell for a couple of days. Fever, slight cough, tired all the time etc. He's really not well and I'm a bit worried. I'm surprised he's sick because we don't go out much at the moment and I keep him in the sling. Sent his test kit off but it could take a while.

What are the chances of him being sick with covid, but me and my dad, who I live with, not having it?

Unlikely right?

We aren't shielding but he's only one and had some breathing problems as a baby where he ended up admitted twice. So don't think IABU to feel slightly worried...

Has he come into contact with other people?

broccoliduns · 09/06/2020 23:24

@Merryoldgoat only me and my dad, but my dad is a doctor who sees patients. Not covid patients but there's still a risk.

Ask your dad

broccoliduns · 09/06/2020 23:26

@MarthasGinYard he's in bed and it's on my mind now Grin but I definitely will tomorrow.

Well your dad could be an asymptomatic carrier and passed it to you both, but it would seem strange for him (Baby) to have it before either of you.

I understand your concern - my 2yo was admitted to hospital last year with breathing difficulties. It’s very worrying when they’re susceptible to these infections.

Whathewhatnow · 09/06/2020 23:28

I'd guess if your dad is a doctor then maybe he (your Da) has some immunity to COVID owing to exposure to coronaviruses? And maybe you by association?

Anyway the test will tell you one way or the other. If your little chap has it, the stats tell us that he will absolutely be ok xx

broccoliduns · 09/06/2020 23:29

@Merryoldgoat I think it's unlikely too.

I don't even know that he is susceptible to anything now, but once you experience your child so unwell, it doesn't really leave you. Sorry you e experienced similar. Kids, they're bloody terrifying!

@Whathewhatnow true. We are also black and have both had vitamin D levels done recently. I'm deficient, dad is severely deficient. Worrying times. Both on high doses to get levels back up!

Fingers crossed it's not covid. I know my son is low risk, it's just hard not to worry when your child has been so unwell in the past.

Bonnieonthelam · 09/06/2020 23:36

It’s good you know your levels are low. We’ve upped our own vit d3 doses too as we were severely deficient too. Hope your little ones feels better soon.

broccoliduns · 09/06/2020 23:37

Thanks @Bonnieonthelam - I've been pretty fatigued for a while. Went to docs and they did the whole hog re tests. Vit D is 20 and should be 50. Iron is 5, should be 30. Dads Vit D was 10! Confused

Who knows? Either it’s one of the many bugs out there normally, or it’s covid and you haven’t caught it off him, for whatever reason.

For what it’s worth, both myself and my work partner have been convinced our respective kids have had it (we are in massive frontline exposure to it constantly). We were both hoping our recent immunity tests would be positive, cos, although we have been fine apart from the odd random temp (we’ve both tested covid -ve multiple times), both our kids were really unwell in late March with typical symptoms.

But we have both had recent negative antibody tests; so who knows? Quite possibly our kids illnesses were normal run of the mill high temps/ cough/ bad chest. It beggars belief that after the exposure we’ve had, we have both had negative antigen and antibody tests repeatedly.

I just think keep up your hygiene and common sense standards and try not to obsess about worries that are possibly going to prove fruitless.

Bonnieonthelam · 09/06/2020 23:41

I can relate to this - ethnic background too. Feel better soon x

Merryoldgoat · 09/06/2020 23:41

I’m also black and my Vit D was terrible. Been on supplements a while abs the differed is quite marked.

Supplement your son too.

broccoliduns · 09/06/2020 23:41

@mrsnoodle55 yep, I agree. Dad had his antibody test back recently and it was negative. Of course he could have picked it up since then. He was disappointed it was neg!

broccoliduns · 09/06/2020 23:43

@Merryoldgoat stupidly I have given him supplements which were advised by paeds nurse since he was tiny, but never supplemented myself. Always the way but I'm strict with it now. Did you find it took a while to notice the difference? What kind of difference did you notice? I'm hopin' and prayin' i start to regain some energy.

Khione · 09/06/2020 23:51

I suspect he has picked up a minor virus that your dad and you are both immune to. Extremely likely you have nothing to worry about and I'm confident your dad will say the same tomorrow.

Merryoldgoat · 10/06/2020 00:11

Energy definitely increased. Aches and pains improved and my chest pains and shortness of breath went.

Took about a month. I take 4000iu a day.
