Ds1 - 14 broke his arm and wrist today and currently in awful pain.

Clean but impacted breaks (possibly on growth plate / Snr surgeon looking at x-rays in the morning) and we are awaiting to see if he needs surgery.

He was given an 1 ibuprofen and 1.5 paracetamol tablets at 4.45pm and I can kick myself as I didn’t ask what dosage they gave him.

They have advised however he can have 3 doses of each meds in 24 hours.

Am I right I thinking I can give him 2 x 5ml of ibuprofen and 4 x 5m of paracetamol?

Did you not get a discharge summary with doses of meds on or a number of the ward to ring?

No as he’s not officially been discharged yet, we were giving the numbers of the plastering team however the office is closed.

They didn’t say if he was swelling or his fingers numb, loss of sensation etc.. we had to take him straight to A&E.

They have him the tablets but he vomited them back up (fully) so gave him liquid (how I knew the dosage)

Can I just thank you all for you’re help Flowers you all deserve flowers

Just in case this is of use. Here are the instructions from a bottle of age 6+ calpol, 250mg per 5ml strength. So you'd give twice the amount recommended here if your infant stuff which is half the strength.

OP meant they didn't know how much paracetamol was in a dose not that they didn't know what 2 x 5ml meant. Also they corrected the height

BertieBotts

It was the Dr, she said she can give them both now together but we would then need to stagger as he’s only allowed 3 of each per day.

Then when I read his medicine bottles, it said 4 x per day.

As an asthmatic I’ve never taken ibuprofen and ds1 is rarely I’ll.

Ds 2 is always unwell however can only take paracetamol as he has chronic asthma.

He very much seems more settled now.

I would try to work on the tablet taking if you can over the next couple of days. I know it's really hard but maybe get him to practice with smarties. I really struggle with tablets too, have a really sensitive gag reflex. The only way I can take them is having a massive mouthful of drink, pop the tablet in and swallow it together with the drink. I've also known it being put in a spoonful of jam/ chocolate spread, yogurt etc. Or try the dispersable tablets just mix them with really strong flavour drink or a ridiculous amount of squash, not ideal but if it works its worth it. Hope your lad feels better soon and his arm heals well.

The Chemist can definitely give you a liquid paracetamol mix for none tablet takers not sure on the ibuprofen but if you get the coated tablets or caplets they go down very easily

Feed him the nuggets after for being a goodboy - ROFL

Well he’s had a settled night, dh heading off to boots now to try and get age appropriate medication and speak to the pharmacist, as after 90 mins in to 111 we gave up and ds was settled comfortably by then.

If Dh can’t get appropriate meds this morning, we will be asking the doctor today to prescribe appropriate medication, as unfortunately the chemist (Asda) could’ve give us age appropriate liquid meds without a prescription. (Hence the over counter one we brought yesterday)

The smartie idea will be getting tested out in the next few days so thank you for that suggestion.

Thank you.

Surely a pharmacist could give you the correct dose in the lesser strength bottle until you get the 6plus

Ibuprofen is easier to take as a tablet as it’s smooth
Paracetamol does come in capsules which I take as don’t like the taste otherWise but you can’t half them. I would work on tablet taking my 9&10 year olds can take tablets it’s much easier if they can eldest gets migraine and liquid paracetamol etc makes him vomit but tablets don’t obviously in younger kids dose can be too high but he’s 35kg tall boy so dose for his age is 525kg so one paracetamol tablet is fine For him

When my youngest badly sprained her knee we were told that ibruprofen can be given more often than 3 times a day. We were told 5 times a day was fine if needed. But not to give more than the right dose for her age each time
