To be grossed out by poo on supermarket bought chicken eggs?

My oh thinks I’m mad 🤣 Decided to do some baking with my 4yo today and couldn’t find a single egg without poo on it! I read you shouldn’t wash them so just used the cleanest one I could find but now I’m reading all about how dangerous chicken poo is (I’ve been on furlough a long time and my brain isn’t operating rationally anymore. )

What does everyone else do?

But what about when you boil the eggs? All the poo goes into the albeit boiling water and then that can get inside the shell.
Only non poo eggs get boiled in my house.

fuckinghellthisshit · 09/06/2020 17:39

People who say "eggs are chicken periods" lack any rudimentary knowledge of zoology. It's an utterly idiotic statement.

ChequerBoard · 09/06/2020 18:12

'What happens when you boil eggs?'

FFS you are boiling them in, you know boiling hot water. So many dumb comments on one single thread 🤷‍♀️

Hulahoop32 · 09/06/2020 18:24

Oh dear. The post was written light heartedly but it seems to have drawn some rather unreasonable responses.
To answer some - I didn’t imply that people who don’t work don’t have fully functioning brains. What I said was mine wasn’t functioning rationally right now. As I have been isolating for weeks I haven’t had much interaction with people.
Secondly I had read shells shouldn’t be washed as the bacteria can seep through the pores and into the egg. I don’t know how true that is either.
My reasoning for being grossed out is just that I had read it contains parasites that are dangerous when inhaled - again - stuff I found on google and the CDC website because I have health anxiety and some days I google things that throw up tonnes of stuff that makes me feel worse when I was looking for something to reassure myself.

There was really no need for this post to turn nasty. Like I said it was written lightheartedly but it would seem I’ve pissed a few people off. Thanks to those who replied anyway.

You anti-bac your eggs before you use them, and then throw away the bit you've just cleaned?

Good old Mumsnet

There's loads of lighthearted posts. Just focus on them.

Hope at the very least they were soil association organic eggs if you must use eggs.
So called free range means very little.

Schmoana · 09/06/2020 19:51

Karma would be interested to know more about that. I Know about the cruelty of male chicks being minced/gassed but is organic definitely more humane/hygienic?

Murinae · 09/06/2020 20:06

@Schmoana I volunteer for fresh start for hens and free range organic is definitely the best/highest welfare standards for hens.

Thingybob · 09/06/2020 20:34

I'm not sure if it's still the case but mushrooms were always grown in chicken poo. I must have eaten hundreds of raw, unwashed mushrooms in my time although I would brush off the largest bits of poo first.

Griselda1 · 09/06/2020 20:53

I'd be more focused on the welfare issues in buying supermarket eggs to be honest. It may also be helpful for your child to know more about where food is sourced from and the issues involved.

ImStillBreathingButBarely2 · 09/06/2020 23:52

It is kind of gross, but the poo i s on the shell, so it won't go near your food.

I know someone who won't eat eggs at all because they are "chicken's periods!" Shock It hasn't put me off them but I remember being astonished when I heard that because I had never thought of them that way, even though of course they are!

bridgetreilly · 10/06/2020 09:03

@Thingybob No, mushrooms these days are grown in sterile compost that actually is safe to eat. I mean, I brush off the dirt because it's not nice to eat, but you don't have to wash the mushrooms and you certainly don't need to disinfect them!

Dylaninthemovies1 · 10/06/2020 10:57

Wait there!!! Do chickens eggs come out the same hole as the poo?? I didn’t know that!

My 4 year old yesterday told me eggs come from chickens bums and I told him it was their vaginas! Oops

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 10/06/2020 10:59

You were both correct - it's a dual-purpose organ.

TheSandman · 10/06/2020 11:38

Don't wash mushrooms - they go slimy!

Completely blow her mind and tell her that if you want a really nice roast chicken for dinner, you shove a lemon up there as well.

Who knew chicken's bum holes was such a hot topic? Over 120 posts 🤣

After twelve weeks of Lockdown what else is there to talk about?
WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 10/06/2020 20:00

Before long, they'll be planning the next I'm A Celebrity series and talk will shift to kangaroos' bumholes instead....

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/06/2020 20:21

@Murinae that chart's very useful, thanks. I've been buying the Burford Brown ones but will switch to organic now.
