Yasmin vs rigevidon. Can't I choose?

Spilledmycoffee · 09/06/2020 13:25

I have had awful experiences with every contraceptive pill etc I've tried, but I haven't tried them in about 10 years and I want to give them one last go. Progesterone only contraception in my experience makes me horribly angry all of the time so I won't try that. I've been looking at the low dose combination pills and wanted to try yasmin.

I had a phone appointment with my GP and told him I want yasmin and briefly explained why. But when I said it had been 10 years since I last tried the pill he just laughed at me a bit. He went on to say something about availability of yasmin and that he was going to prescribe rigevidon instead.

Looking online, rigevidon seems to be completely not what I wanted, and I cant find anything to suggest an availablity issue regarding yasmin.

Wibu to refuse to try the rigevidon and insist on a prescription for yasmin?

Any information on either pill or alternatives is also appreciated. Thank you!

I was on yasmin years ago and it was recalled. I think it was linked to blood clots. No idea if it's still routinely prescribed.
You can't insist on a prescription for anything I'm afraid, that's not how it works.
What it is it you don't like about the one prescribed for you? Are you not willing to even try it?
What age are you if you don't mind me asking?

CaptainButtock · 09/06/2020 13:49

I thought we were talking baby names BlushGrin

Was going to day definitely Yasmin...

WatcherintheRye · 09/06/2020 13:50

Blush Thought this was a baby names thread!
Was going to say I'd go with Yasmin every time, no contest Grin

HermioneWeasley · 09/06/2020 13:52

Yasmin is still available but I think it’s more expensive. My GP asked if I’d move to an identical one called Lucette and I’ve been fine on it.

Prior to that my non regular GP moved me from Yasmin to rigevidon. It’s fucking rat poison - don’t take it. I gained half a stone in 2 weeks and was crying at fucking adverts.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/06/2020 13:52

There are a lot of pill shortages at the moment, I'm on my third one this year because of them.

Can you buy Yasmin from an online pharmacy if your GP won't prescribe it?

Loop3x5 · 09/06/2020 13:53

I'm on yasmin - it's very expensive for the NHS, so they don't like prescribing it. It also comes with increased risk of clotting. I only managed to get it as they were removing my dianette.

NewName89 · 09/06/2020 13:53

Yasmin is the only pill that ever worked for me. Rigevidon was prescribed to me 2 years ago and it turned me into a crying mess, it was horrific. They won't give me Yasmin because of increased blood clots and being over 30 now. So I no longer take the pill, I have to deal with being bed ridden with pain once a month because of my adenomyosis but I'd rather deal with that then the stupid pill.

Lockheart · 09/06/2020 13:54

If you want Yasmin that badly why don't you buy it from Lloyds or Superdrug?

HeyBlaby · 09/06/2020 13:54

I get my pill from Lloyds pharmacy online, private service and I use a more expensive pill but still only £30 for 3 months supply.

justjessie · 09/06/2020 14:01

I buy yasmin from the online Superdrug doc. About 30£ for 3 months and I don't have to bother begging a GP. In fact I just renewed it last night and it'll be delivered to my door in a couple of days. Totally worth it although I know we shouldn't have to pay, just saves hassle.

Spilledmycoffee · 09/06/2020 14:01

@cheermeupifyoucan it uses the older synthetic hormones and they just seem to cause mood swings and irritability in me, I suppose I'm mostly interested in trying the newer generations, specifically the very low dose ones. I would be very reluctant to take the rigevidon but It's possible I could be persuaded to try. I'm 30 by the way

Lol at baby naming thread. I hadn't even thought 😅

I thought this was a name thread too! 😂

SunbathingDragon · 09/06/2020 14:12

I stopped taking Yasmin when I was 35 and started up again in my 40s. It’s perfectly possible to get from your GP.

I would say to give Rigevidon a chance (I did for six months before going back onto Yasmin) and ask your doctor to change if you don’t get on with it.

CoquettishIngenue · 09/06/2020 14:15

I honestly thought this was going to be a baby name thread after first...

Nacreous · 09/06/2020 14:16

I would get grumpy about it tbh. Or try Rigevidon for a month or two and see. Trouble is they always want you to stick at it.

I got moved from microgynon to Rigevidon and in spite of them having the same dosages I got breakthrough bleeding on Rigevidon. They then switched me to cileste which still didn't solve it. In the end I insisted on being switched back to microgynon and it's been fine ever since. It was a right hassle though.

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 09/06/2020 14:19

I don't want to derail the thread but if you're looking for low dose hormones, have you thought about a Mirena coil instead? Much lower dose as it's in the womb rather than being intended to circulate through the entire body. Insertion might be a bit uncomfortable if you haven't had children but then it's done and you can mostly forget about it for 5 years.

I only mention it as I wish I'd tried one sooner! I didn't really know that it was an option until fairly recently.

lockdownstress · 09/06/2020 14:20

I'm a GP with a particular interest in women's health. Rarely start yasmin - it's a triumph of marketing over reality IMO. It's not low dose. If someone has been on it for years I will suggest a switch to one with a lower blood clot risk, offering to switch back if they have any problems - hardly any do.

why do you want Yasmin OP? I can't see any actual reasons in your post other than it being low dose (which it isn't). It would be irresponsible to start you on yasmin as a first pill unless there's a good reason.

Spilledmycoffee · 09/06/2020 14:22

Buying it is an option but to be honest even though its not very expensive objectively its more than I can really afford considering it's not just a 1 off.

Thank you for all the honesty and advice! I really suffered emotionally previously with trying different pills and being told to stick with it for 3 months... it never improved. It was really quite horrendous. I really don't want that again which is why I'm anxious to be more in control of what i try I suppose

Everyone else thought this was baby names but I thought it was about a course case Blush

jumblersale · 09/06/2020 14:24

Yasmin is available and is prescribed still.

Dannyandsandy · 09/06/2020 14:26

Microlite is good and low dose

Spilledmycoffee · 09/06/2020 14:32

@lockdownstress

Can you give me more information please? Everything Ive read calls yasmin low lose

Can you give me an idea what youd generally recommend given my concerns?

OP posts:
Haenow · 09/06/2020 14:32

YANBU but I believe Yasmin had some safety concerns a while ago. They took me off it and started me on rigevidon. I was having issues with breakthrough bleeds, so around a year ago, I went back to yasmin. I was hungry, cranky and bloated with terrible headaches. I’ve returned to rigevidon and tolerate the breakthrough bleeds.
Yasmin is more expensive but I think there are cheaper versions with the same key ingredients?

P.S. please don’t call your baby Rigevidon. Grin Wink

PrincessHoneysuckle · 09/06/2020 14:34

I'm on yasmin and the nurse suggested I try another and i told her no chance. Its the only pill I've ever got on with.I doubt anyone would be put on it from scratch now for the reasons pp have said.

Witchofzog · 09/06/2020 14:46

Yasmin triggered depression for me and I haven't really been the same since. I found some info back then (7 years ago) linking it to depression and suicidal thoughts. I have been ok on other pills in the past so would not recommend Yasmin
