Do you believe in tarot readings?

I’m usually the most skeptic person you could meet. Not spiritual at all. Never give it much thought.

A friend of mine has recently bought some tarot cards and a book. I don’t think she really knows what she’s doing and is just reading it out of a book.

She persuaded me to do some. Some of the things that were said has unsettled me. I won’t go into detail. First time I’ve ever done anything like it.

I’ve gone a compete skeptic to frightened overnight that something bad is going to happen. Already had a terrible year losing a family Denver and a friend and nearly losing somebody else recently.

I’m worried it was predicting my future and terrible things might happen.

Please tell me it’s complete nonsense which will make me feel better 🤣

I read tarot daily. They help me organise my thoughts. They do not predict the future i find they just elaborate on questions you already have. They're just cards of wisdom and advice. They tell you what could happen depending on choices you make but they don't predict anything. I don't see them as particularly occulty but I'm always amazed how I manage to pick cards that resonate with my thoughts or question. I wouldn't worry about a reading she may have done for you, sounds like she hasn't a clue.

Lynda07 · 09/06/2020 15:12

Absolute tosh and if a friend did a reading for you - well, she knows you, doesn't she.

Nasty, dangerous stuff.

ShebaShimmyShake · 09/06/2020 15:48

It's complete shite based on cold reading, confirmation bias and so on. I bet whatever your friend told you would apply just as equally to me and 99% of other people. We all have problems and baggage and the human condition is called that for a reason.

Roselilly36 · 09/06/2020 16:10

I regularly read tarot, for myself and friends. I wouldn’t dream of telling anyone something that would worry them though.

thepeopleversuswork · 09/06/2020 16:19

Nope. These things are designed to exploit the vulnerable.

The “predictions” they generate are couched in such vague terms that they could be read to apply to just about anything.

I have three sets of tarot cards in an old shed. They belong to a young man, a friend of my daughter who fell on hard times. Apparently the cards were his sister’s who died many years ago, and according to someone else, not a nice person. The young man will not talk about her. They were given to me to pass on to the young man by a devout Christian who was helping him but did not want them in his possession. He and his wife felt very uncomfortable about the cards so I said I was happy to keep them and pass onto the owner. Some people feel they call up the devil but maybe that is if you actually go through some ritual before using them. I have no feelings about them and hope perhaps they have now started to deteriorate and the owner has forgotten about them so I can eventually chuck them out.

GrimDamnFanjo · 10/06/2020 18:11

@gingergiraffe I wouldn't worry about them. Throw them away! Tarot is not about telling fortunes or the occult etc. There seems to be a bit of confusion between cards and so called psychics.

gingergiraffe · 10/06/2020 20:50

GFF yes, I feel the same!

Cattermole · 10/06/2020 20:56

No, no, no, no, no, a million times no.
When I was about 15 I used to read tarot for a living - which makes me sound much more exotic than a youthful goth working on an 0898 line over a shop in Ashton Under Lyme - and it was heartbreaking.
The number of sad, lonely, desperate people who wanted so much to hear "he isn't being unfaithful", "you'll meet someone when you least expect it: he's close to you now, it's someone you know, but you don't know how he feels about you", "things will be better for you soon"....

StoneofDestiny · 10/06/2020 20:58

How on earth can a set of cards mass produced in a factory tell anything about your future?
How can any person tell you your future?
Giant scams for gullible or suggestible people.

Littlebyerockerboo · 10/06/2020 21:07

Genuinely interested in the answers here, I went and saw a physic as couple of years ago, she was recommended to me by a friend who didn't know much about me. I have no social media and went in very skeptical, giving nothing away.
She recorded the sitting on my phone.
She came up with my DPs name, my ex name, my ex H name and his gf - a few names that would be in my future - and actually are (its just dawned on me one name that really is very forefront in my present right now was mentioned - with a warning)
Also my DPs ex wife's, husband, who died name - had a message for me, but i didn't know his name until i came out and mentioned it to my Dp.
She also wrote down all the names on a piece of paper as she was talking and gave me the paper to reference afterwards as "it'll make more sense in the future in relation to some names"
She was correct about DP and my relationship being difficult going forward, and mentioned financial worries (theres been many!) And did laugh and said she was aware that was something that would apply to alot of people, but she was just telling me what she could sense.

I still have no idea how she did it, some of the names aren't even common.. none of that "name starting with a J.... Jane, Julie, jason" nonsense, just "whose Dillion"
"Who's Amar" etc.

I still can't work it out and to this day, it still surprises me. Anyone care to debunk?

Ladybirdbookworm · 11/06/2020 00:31

Honestly push it out of your mind ....Its a cruel and ridiculous past time.
No one can predict the future and remember as well we all have free will .
Flowersdon't worry about it - absolute shite

NietzschePeachPearPlum · 11/06/2020 09:40

Load of bollocks. Tarot cards do not foretell the future (how could that be possible, seriously?) and they have no connection to higher beings or forces, good or evil.
They are supposed to help you reveal your unconscious knowledge and feelings to make them conscious, so you can understand yourself and situations better and make decisions. They’re meant to be a conduit to your higher and hidden knowledge, so you can tap into it.

There’s nothing psychic or woo about tarot.

Fluffybutter · 11/06/2020 10:08

You can always bend these things so they seem relevant to your life but they’re really just cards drawn at RANDOM .
Most of the cards are meant to have double meanings anyway so they not all bad, if you really believe in that kind of junk that is ..

If you are not already familiar with cold reading its worth reading up on the subject. As a teenager I used to do fortune telling for charity events/friends and I stopped doing it because people kept telling me how accurate I was when from my point of view I was telling people what they might find credible or entertaining.

I don't have a psychic bone in my body, its utter woo. I realised years later it was just an aptitude for cold reading.

VickyEadieofThigh · 26/07/2021 16:11

No, it's nonsense.

WorraLiberty · 26/07/2021 16:21

It's a pile of old shite read by the gullible, for the gullible.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/07/2021 16:27

Utter bullshit. At best it's an expensive pantomime at its worst it's a method to manipulate the vulnerable into an anxious wreck and financial ruin.

SmashingBlouson · 26/07/2021 16:36

I have played with Tarot Cards for years as I grew up with them. They are just a bit of fun. If you get a reading you don't agree with,it usually tells you more about how you feel about a situation than if you got what you expected, if that makes sense.

Bad cards are usually about you being in a situation that isn't good for you and you can't see it. Death/Tower is a necessary clearing away to enable rebirth/renewal.

I once pulled out the devil card followed by three sixes once. I ran out of the room screaming. Not long after I met a horrible abusive bastard, who I was only with a short while, but left lasting damage for a while emotionally. I think it was trying to tell me something! Grin
